The best tablet for a student is the one that runs required course software and remains affordable after adding the pen and keyboard. For handwritten notes with a pen in the box, consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE; for iPadOS apps or creative work, an iPad Air with generation-compatible accessories; and for Windows desktop applications, a Surface Pro. If you already own a laptop and want a companion for general study, the iPad (A16) is another option.
Start with the software your course requires
Before comparing screens or pens, check the applications and services required by your course. A tablet running iPadOS or Android may not support specialist software that is available for Windows. If your course depends on a desktop application, verify that it runs on the specific Surface Pro configuration you are considering; a Windows label alone does not guarantee that every program or configuration will meet your needs.

Also consider whether this tablet is replacing a laptop or supplementing one. A tablet can be useful for reading, annotating PDFs, and taking notes, but a companion device may be a better fit if your laptop already handles demanding coursework.
Compare the complete setup, not just the tablet
For each candidate, account for the tablet, the compatible pen if it is not included, and the exact keyboard or keyboard case you intend to use. Accessory compatibility depends on model and generation, so check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying. When the Galaxy Tab S10 FE makes sense
The Galaxy Tab S10 FE is a straightforward option if you want a stylus for notes or drawing without buying the pen separately. Samsung says the included S Pen is pressure-sensitive and suitable for note-taking and drawing. That is a vendor description, not an independent performance test. The S Pen included with both the S10 FE and S10 FE+ does not support BLE, Bluetooth pairing, charging, or Air actions; Samsung says Air actions work with the separately sold S Pen Pro.
Do not assume the keyboard is included. Samsung lists the Book Cover Keyboard and Book Cover Keyboard Slim as separate purchases. When an iPad Air is the better fit
Choose an iPad Air when iPadOS apps, an existing Apple workflow, or creative tasks are central to your studies. Pencil and keyboard support is model-specific: Apple’s current compatibility guide lists Apple Pencil USB-C and Apple Pencil Pro for iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch models with M2, M3, and M4 chips. Confirm the exact tablet generation and Pencil before purchase; do not assume that every Apple Pencil works with every iPad.

When to choose Surface Pro for Windows
A Surface Pro is the Windows-oriented choice in this shortlist for students whose coursework depends on Windows desktop applications. Compatibility still depends on the software and the configuration, so check your course requirements directly. Microsoft states that the Surface Pro keyboard and Surface Slim Pen are sold separately; include both in your setup budget if you need them. Microsoft’s Surface Pro product page lists the device and accessory details.
Is the iPad (A16) a sensible study tablet?
The iPad (A16) is a candidate for general study, especially when you already have a laptop for software that needs a desktop operating system. A current comparison guide identifies it as a general study option and notes that a pen and keyboard are additional purchases and Apple Pencil Pro is not supported. Check which Pencil and keyboard work with the exact iPad model before adding accessories.

How to make the final choice
- List required software. Check the course or department requirements and confirm that essential applications work on the operating system you plan to use.
- Decide whether the tablet replaces a laptop. If it must run desktop software, prioritize a compatible Windows setup; if you already own a suitable laptop, a tablet may serve mainly for notes and reading.
- Verify the exact pen and keyboard. Match each accessory to the tablet’s model and generation using the manufacturer information linked above.
- Calculate the full setup cost. Include the tablet, any separately purchased pen, and the keyboard or keyboard case. Compare complete configurations available in your region rather than headline device prices.
- Weigh portability against screen size. Choose a size you can comfortably carry to class while still meeting your needs for reading, writing, and coursework.
Battery-life figures depend on the test
Battery results are comparable only when the test conditions are similar. Tom’s Guide reports 11 hours and 25 minutes for the iPad 11 in its continuous web-browsing test with the screen set to 150 nits.
