Choose Local or Remote Dev Environments for Your Team

Dev Containers define an environment; Gitpod/Ona can run and automate one. Compare local and remote execution, compatibility limits, and when to use each.

Choose local Dev Containers when developers have sufficient local compute, want direct control of their machines, and can support the container runtime setup. Choose Gitpod/Ona when remote or customer-hosted compute, automated setup, or centrally managed workspaces solve a specific team need. They are not competing standards: Dev Containers describe a way to configure an environment, while Gitpod/Ona is a platform that can use that configuration and add provisioning and automation.

“GitOps” here means keeping development-environment configuration in version-controlled repositories. The available documentation supports that description; it does not establish Gitpod as a GitOps deployment platform.

What is being compared: a specification or an environment platform?

A Dev Container is a configuration specification and execution format for repeatable development environments. The specification defines development containers and environments, including optional sidecar containers, and aims to make them easier to create and recreate. Its concise definition is: “A development container is a container in which a user can develop an application.” Dev Container Specification

Gitpod documentation describes Dev Containers and Automations as core configuration elements. The specification’s supporting-tools list identifies Ona as formerly Gitpod and says it adheres to the specification. In other words, a team can use Dev Container configuration as a foundation and choose where and how to run it; the two choices are not mutually exclusive. • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

“Local Dev Containers” means that the developer runs the environment on their own machine. A Gitpod/Ona environment may instead use a hosted or customer-controlled deployment, depending on the product and organization. Gitpod documentation describes local, cloud, VPC, and on-premises options; confirm availability for the specific product and organization rather than assuming every deployment is available to every user. Isolation and infrastructure Depends on the local runtime, host machine, and team configuration; there is no universal security comparison established here. Gitpod describes a zero-trust approach and customer-controlled infrastructure options. Treat these as vendor claims, not as independent security-audit findings. Gitpod documentation
Portability The specification can be consumed by multiple tools, but support for individual properties and their behavior varies. When local Dev Containers are the better fit

Local execution is a sensible choice when the team wants development to stay on each person’s machine and has the capacity to support local container runtimes. It avoids making a remote workspace service a prerequisite for the workflow, but shifts responsibility for machine resources and local setup to developers and their team.

When Gitpod/Ona is the better fit

A managed or customer-hosted environment is worth considering when local setup or local capacity is a concrete obstacle, or when the team needs automated provisioning and a centrally standardized workflow. Gitpod describes these as product goals and capabilities; whether they fit depends on the deployment model and organization, not on a universal advantage over local development. Gitpod documentation

  • Consider it when remote compute would address a real limitation of developer machines.
  • Consider it when automating workspace setup would help the team manage onboarding or consistent environments.
  • Consider it when isolated workspaces or customer-controlled infrastructure are requirements, after confirming the applicable product generation and deployment options.

Do not select a platform on assumed savings, speed, security, or portability: the sources do not establish independent comparative benchmarks, a universal security assessment, or a current pricing comparison. Pricing and geographic availability should be confirmed for the specific organization and product.

Can the same Dev Container configuration work locally and in Gitpod?

It can be a shared starting point, but a common format does not guarantee identical behavior. The specification’s supporting-tools information and property reference show that implementations can differ in support and constraints. Test the configuration on every backend the team intends to use. Specification supporting tools Dev Container JSON reference

In particular, validate mounts, lifecycle hooks, services, port forwarding, host variables, and editor behavior. These details can depend on the execution environment, so a configuration that works on one developer’s machine should not be treated as proof that it will behave the same in a hosted or customer-managed workspace.

How to choose and validate a workflow

  1. Identify the constraint. Decide whether the real issue is local machine capacity, inconsistent setup, onboarding effort, infrastructure control, or another specific team requirement.
  2. Choose where execution belongs. Use local execution when developers can support it and its resources are sufficient. Evaluate Gitpod/Ona when remote or customer-hosted compute, automation, or standardized workspaces address the identified constraint.
  3. Keep configuration in the repository. Use Dev Container metadata for the environment definition, and keep any platform-specific automation and tasks version-controlled as appropriate.
  4. Test on every intended backend. Check mounts, hooks, services, ports, host variables, and editor integration rather than assuming specification support is identical.
  5. Verify product and deployment details. Confirm the current product generation, available deployment model, plan, and geographic availability with the vendor; these specifics are not established universally by the documentation cited here.

Gitpod Classic migration is a separate case

For projects migrating from Gitpod Classic, Gitpod’s migration guide describes using .devcontainer/devcontainer.json and .gitpod/automations.yml in the newer setup, moving environment definition and ordered tasks from .gitpod.yml. The guide warns that manual changes may be needed, including around the default workspace folder. These are migration instructions for Gitpod Classic, not a universal requirement for new projects or every Gitpod/Ona configuration. Gitpod migration documentation

Should development run locally or in the cloud?

Choose based on operational fit, not the label “GitOps.” Local Dev Containers suit teams with capable machines and the ability to support local runtime setup. Gitpod/Ona suits teams whose concrete requirements call for remote or customer-hosted compute, automated provisioning, or standardized workspaces. If both execution modes matter, use the same Dev Container configuration where practical and validate each implementation rather than treating portability as automatic.
