To hide text contents from your iPhone Lock Screen, go to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose Never. Choose When Unlocked instead if you want message alerts to appear but only reveal their contents after unlocking. To change this for Messages alone, use Settings > Notifications > Messages > Show Previews.
Hide previews for every app or just Messages
The system-wide setting affects previews from more than text messages. Apple notes that previews may include text from Messages and Mail, as well as Calendar invitation details. If you want to keep previews visible for other apps, change the Messages setting instead.

What each preview option does
| Setting | What appears while iPhone is locked | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Never | Notification preview contents stay off the Lock Screen. | Choose this if you do not want message text displayed there. |
| When Unlocked | Alerts can appear, but preview contents wait until the iPhone is unlocked. | Choose this to retain alerts while keeping their contents private from someone viewing the locked phone. |
| Always | Previews appear on the Lock Screen even while iPhone is locked. | Choose this only if you are comfortable with contents being visible before unlocking. |
Hiding previews is different from stopping notifications. If you turn off Allow Notifications for Messages under Settings > Notifications > Messages, you disable that app’s notifications rather than merely hiding their contents.
Other Lock Screen privacy controls
If available on your iPhone, you can lock an app with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. Apple says information inside a locked app will not appear in notification previews, search, Siri suggestions, or call history. See Apple’s guide to locking or hiding an app for the feature and its availability.

You can also review features accessible before unlocking under Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, then Allow Access When Locked. Disabling a feature can protect information available from the Lock Screen, but also removes its quick access. This is a broader control, not a substitute for choosing a preview setting.

These steps address the Lock Screen. Notifications may also appear in other places; for example, Apple’s guide notes that notifications can appear in StandBy on iOS 17 and later.
