There is no single setting that changes how every email attachment opens. First identify your email app, device, and the attachment’s file type, then choose whether you want to preview it, download or save it, or open it in an installed app. The steps below cover Gmail on a computer, Outlook, and Apple Mail on iPhone; changing your default email app is a separate setting.
What do you mean by “change what opens”?
Email apps can preview an attachment without saving it, download or save a copy, or hand the file to another app. Those are distinct actions, and the available choices depend on the email client, its version, and the file type.

- Preview: Inspect a supported file in the mail app or browser.
- Download or save: Store a copy on your device or, where offered, in a cloud account.
- Open in an app: Use a suitable installed app to view or edit the saved file.
If a downloaded PDF or image launches the wrong app, that is generally an operating-system file-handling choice—not the same as choosing which email app handles mail actions. The steps for changing a file-type default vary by operating system, so use current instructions for your specific device and file type rather than applying one universal procedure.
How do I download an attachment instead of previewing it in Gmail?
On a computer, open the message and use the attachment’s download control to save a copy. Gmail’s attachment menu may also offer an option to save to Google Drive. Google notes that some attachments cannot be added to Drive, and your browser’s settings determine where downloaded files appear. Google’s Gmail attachment instructions cover downloading and saving supported attachments.

After downloading, open the file from the location where your browser saved it. If you want to edit it, use an app that supports that file type. For a video attached directly to a message, Gmail may show an error in its preview; Google’s documented workaround is to download the video and play it with your device’s video player.
Confidential mode can prevent recipients from copying or downloading message text and attachments. If download or preview is unavailable, that restriction or an unsupported file type may explain it.

How do I control attachment previews in Outlook?
Outlook’s attachment options differ across classic Outlook for Windows, new Outlook, Outlook on the web, and Outlook.com, and can also depend on the account. In Outlook on the web or Outlook.com, an attachment may appear in the reading pane. Selecting it can open a preview or the app associated with that file type; the attachment menu may offer download or a save-to-OneDrive option. Supported Office files may be editable in a browser or desktop Office app. Download unsupported file types and open them in a suitable app. See Microsoft’s Outlook attachment guidance for the product experiences it covers.
Turn off previewers in classic Outlook for Windows
Only use this path in classic Outlook for Windows; it is not a general setting for new Outlook, Outlook on the web, or mobile:

How do I open an attachment in Apple Mail on iPhone?

If you mean that links or other email actions should launch a different email app, change the default email app instead: open Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Email, then select an app that supports the feature. Apple documents this in its default-app settings guide. This chooses the app for sending and receiving email; it does not set a universal viewer for PDFs, images, or other attachments. Google also documents setting Gmail as the default mail app on iPhone or iPad, with its stated flow requiring iOS or iPadOS 18.0 or later; check the Google instructions for current requirements.

What if an attachment will not download or preview?
- Confirm the setup: Identify your email client and version, device and operating system, and the attachment’s file type.
- Choose the intended action: Decide whether you need to inspect the file, save a copy, or edit it in an app.
- Use the attachment menu: In Gmail on a computer, try download or Drive if offered. In Outlook, look for preview, download, or OneDrive options.
- Check the destination app: If a downloaded file opens in an unexpected app, consult current “open with” or default-app instructions for your exact operating system and file type.
- For Gmail browser problems: Google recommends checking browser support, disabling extensions one at a time, and clearing browser cache and cookies. Also check whether confidential mode restricts downloading or whether the file type is unsupported.
When should you avoid opening an attachment?
Do not open or download a suspicious attachment just to test a setting. Gmail warns that attachments containing unverified scripts may be unsafe and that encrypted attachments may not be scannable. If a message looks suspicious, Google advises not replying or downloading its attachment. Follow any additional security rules from your organization.
