An Internet access router connects a local or subscriber network to an upstream network and forwards IP traffic between them. “Access” describes the router’s edge-of-network role; it does not mean a special kind of routing protocol, and it does not necessarily mean a home Wi-Fi device.
What is an Internet access router?
It is an IP router used where a local or subscriber network connects to an upstream provider network. The router examines the destination information in IP packets and uses routing information to decide where to forward them next. That next step may be another network interface or a next-hop router.

The Internet access part describes the router’s position and purpose: providing a path from a local or subscriber network toward an upstream network that offers Internet connectivity. The same general access role can appear in home, business, or provider networks. The term does not specify one physical product design.

The IETF’s RFC 1812, Requirements for IP Version 4 Routers, defines requirements for IPv4 routers and describes forwarding IP datagrams between networks using routing information. As the RFC concerns IPv4, it should not be treated as a complete specification of contemporary IPv6 router behavior.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How does a router differ from a modem, switch, access point, or gateway?
These names refer to different network functions, even when a single consumer device performs several of them.
- Router: Forwards IP traffic between IP networks using IP-level destination information and routing information.
- Modem or ONT: Terminates a particular broadband access medium or provider service. It may be a separate device or part of an integrated gateway; it is not the defining function of a router.
- Ethernet switch: Typically forwards link-layer frames among devices on a local Ethernet segment. A gateway may include a switch, but local frame switching is distinct from routing between IP networks.
- Wireless access point: Connects Wi-Fi devices to a local network over radio. A wireless router commonly combines an access point with routing and Ethernet switching.
- Gateway: A broad term for an entry point between networks or systems. In consumer broadband, it often means a combined modem or ONT, router, switch, and Wi-Fi access point.
NIST describes a router as a layer-3 gateway that relays and directs packets between networks in its Router glossary entry. Hewlett Packard Enterprise uses “access router” for equipment connecting subscribers to provider networks for Internet or private-network access; that is a description of the role, not a separate standards-defined forwarding protocol.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Does an Internet access router have to be a home Wi-Fi router?
No. The term identifies a routing role at a network edge, not a requirement for Wi-Fi or a particular enclosure. A provider or business network may use a dedicated access router, while a home may use a wireless router or an integrated gateway that combines routing with broadband termination, switching, and Wi-Fi.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
What should you check before choosing or setting up one?
Start with the Internet service’s handoff and equipment requirements. The right arrangement depends on whether the service arrives through cable, DSL, fiber with an ONT, cellular, or an Ethernet WAN connection, and whether the provider requires or supplies particular equipment.
- Identify the handoff. Confirm the connection type and what device terminates it. A separate modem or ONT may be needed, unless that function is built into a gateway or provided another way.
- Decide which functions you need. Determine whether you need routing alone or also Wi-Fi, Ethernet switching, or other gateway features. Do not assume the router itself supplies Wi-Fi or broadband termination.
- Check the local network requirements. Consider wired port count, Wi-Fi coverage, client devices, and placement when choosing between a dedicated router and a combined device.
- Verify compatibility and management. Check the provider’s equipment and operating-mode requirements, and confirm whether you can manage the device yourself.
These checks help distinguish the Internet-facing routing role from the other functions a home network may need. They do not imply that every service or household needs the same hardware arrangement.
