Choose the cord, attachment, holder, and any breakaway feature to match the credential and the wearer’s setting—not a claim that the lanyard itself provides security.
What an ID lanyard can—and cannot—do
Employees, students, visitors, contractors, and event attendees commonly use lanyards to carry visible identification or access credentials. A lanyard keeps the credential accessible; it does not authenticate a person, control entry, or prevent unauthorized access on its own. Those outcomes depend on the credential and the organization’s access procedures.

For routine badge carrying, “security” means keeping the credential attached and available for its intended use. No comparative testing establishes one lanyard as universally best, or shows that a particular badge lanyard reduces injuries or improves access security.
Choose a lanyard by how the badge is used
Start with the credential and holder
Check the card’s dimensions and orientation, then choose a holder that fits it. Confirm that the lanyard’s end attachment fits the holder or the credential’s slot or hole. If you are replacing only the cord, compatibility matters just as much as the cord’s appearance.

For example, a “breakaway lanyard that I can fit through the holes” is a useful compatibility requirement: verify the attachment dimensions and the badge’s opening before choosing. It is not enough for a product to be described generally as a badge lanyard.
Match the attachment to the workflow
Consider how often the badge must be scanned, removed, or handed over. A fixed attachment may suit a credential that stays with the wearer, while a detachable connection can make frequent removal more convenient. Check the actual hardware and how it connects; product labels alone do not establish that it will work with every holder.

Choose construction and width for everyday wear
Material, cord construction, and width affect how a lanyard feels and how it sits when worn. Select for the wearer’s comfort and routine rather than assuming one material or width is best for everyone. Supplier catalogs describe different constructions and customizable choices, but they do not provide independent comparative tests.
Breakaway or continuous: decide based on the setting
A breakaway lanyard has a connector designed to separate when pulled. A continuous design does not have that release feature. Consider whether a caught cord is a foreseeable concern in the wearer’s environment, and follow workplace or school requirements. A breakaway connector is a product feature, not proof that a specific lanyard guarantees safety.

- Consider a breakaway design when the setting makes a neck cord catching on something a concern. Confirm where the release is located and how the product is intended to separate.
- Consider a continuous design when the release feature is not needed for the wearer’s routine and the organization’s rules permit it.
Neither option should be treated as a substitute for site-specific safety procedures. The feature’s presence alone does not establish how a product performs in a particular incident.
Keep badge lanyards separate from fall-protection equipment
The word “lanyard” also appears in occupational fall protection, where it refers to equipment connected to a harness or belt. OSHA’s Technical Manual defines that component as “a flexible rope, wire rope, or strap.” That definition concerns fall-protection systems, not an everyday ID badge cord. A badge lanyard is not fall-protection equipment.

A practical checklist before buying
- Identify the credential: note the card dimensions, orientation, and any slot or hole.
- Select a compatible holder: confirm the card fits and can be presented or scanned as required.
- Check the end hardware: ensure it fits the holder or credential opening and supports the way the badge is used.
- Choose the cord: compare material, construction, and width for comfort and the wearer’s routine.
- Decide on a release feature: assess the environment and applicable organizational requirements before choosing breakaway or continuous construction.
- Verify the listing: check the holder dimensions, attachment type, release details, current availability, and price with the seller.
What product descriptions can establish
Supplier and catalog pages can show that lanyards and badge holders come in different materials, widths, attachments, and release configurations. They are useful for identifying options, not for proving a universal winner or a measurable security benefit. A 2023 catalog establishes that relevant ID accessories were listed at that time; it does not establish current stock.
