Choose a Wi-Fi 7 Mesh for Your Ethernet and Coverage Needs

Orbi 770 brings multi-gigabit LAN ports and larger published coverage estimates; Velop Pro 7 offers four gigabit LAN ports per node. Compare pack size and needs before deciding.

The NETGEAR Orbi 770 is the better fit if you need multi-gigabit Ethernet, a larger advertised coverage ceiling, or an official satellite expansion option. The Linksys Velop Pro 7 gives you four gigabit LAN ports on each node and may suit homes whose wired devices do not need speeds above 1 Gbps. Both are tri-band Wi-Fi 7 systems; neither is a universal winner, and the available independent reviews are not a controlled head-to-head test.

How the Orbi 770 and Velop Pro 7 compare

Both systems use Wi-Fi 7 across the 2.4-, 5-, and 6-GHz bands. Linksys identifies its MBE7000 Velop Pro 7 as a BE11000 tri-band system. NETGEAR advertises the Orbi 770 at up to 11 Gbps. These are product-class and manufacturer maximum claims, not the speeds a particular device is guaranteed to receive.

Which system has better Ethernet ports?

The Orbi 770 has the clear advantage for wired devices or a wired network backbone that can exceed gigabit speeds. Its router offers three 2.5-Gbps LAN ports, and its satellites have two 2.5-Gbps LAN ports. The Velop Pro 7 supplies four LAN ports per node, but each is limited to 1 Gbps; its separate internet port is 2.5 Gbps.

That difference matters only if the connected equipment and service can use it. A 2.5-Gbps port does not make a gigabit-only computer, switch, or network connection run faster. Conversely, the Velop’s extra LAN socket can be more useful than a faster port if you need to connect several gigabit devices at one node. Check the port speed of each wired device and whether you plan to connect nodes by Ethernet before choosing.

How much coverage do you need?

NETGEAR’s current product page lists up to 5,500 square feet for the Orbi 770 two-pack and up to 8,000 square feet for the three-pack. NETGEAR also advertises up to 100 concurrent devices for the three-pack. Those are vendor estimates and maximum claims, not guarantees for every floor plan or a promise that all devices will receive high speeds throughout the stated area. The company announced the same up-to-11-Gbps and up-to-8,000-square-foot claims for a three-pack in 2024; that announcement is not an independent test.

Linksys offers varying pack choices and notes that some homes may need additional nodes. The evidence does not establish a like-for-like coverage figure for Velop Pro 7, so do not infer that it covers the same area as an Orbi pack merely because the systems share a Wi-Fi generation.

  • Consider the number of floors, wall and floor materials, and where you can place nodes.
  • Match the kit’s node count to the layout rather than relying only on a headline square-foot figure.
  • Remember that interference, obstructions, traffic, and client-device capabilities affect actual range and speed.

What Wi-Fi 7 features depend on software?

Multi-Link Operation can use more than one band for a connection, but advertised support does not establish that the feature behaves identically on both systems today. NETGEAR’s launch announcement describes combining the 5- and 6-GHz bands for client links and backhaul. Linksys’ MBE7000 support FAQ says MLO is currently in beta. Check the current firmware information and confirm that your client devices support the features you intend to use.

Linksys also describes Cognitive Security functions that block malicious websites and adult content using Fortinet Secure DNS and Cisco OpenDNS. These are product features, not a substitute for checking the system’s current settings and terms. NETGEAR says some Orbi features require additional subscriptions; confirm which features are included and any current fees before buying.

What do independent reviews say?

TechRadar’s separate Orbi 770 review reported that the system filled a dead spot with the full 150-Mbps broadband speed available in that review setting. Its separate Velop Pro 7 review found fast, reliable coverage and noted rough edges in the app. These observations describe the reviewers’ own environments, not a controlled comparison of the two systems or a prediction for a different home.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the Orbi 770 if

  • You need multi-gigabit LAN ports for wired equipment or backhaul.
  • The Orbi two- or three-pack’s published coverage estimate is a useful starting point for your home, and you have accounted for the layout and construction.

Choose the Velop Pro 7 if

  • You need four LAN sockets at a node and gigabit Ethernet is sufficient for your wired devices.
  • You prefer its setup and management approach and have an iOS or Android device available for setup.
  • You have checked the pack size and current local price against an Orbi kit with the same number of nodes.

Before you buy

  1. Count your wired devices and check their Ethernet speeds, including any switch or wired-backhaul equipment.
  2. Compare kits with the same number of nodes; a two-pack and a three-pack are not equivalent price comparisons.
  3. Check current firmware, app requirements, feature availability, subscription terms, and warranty conditions in your country.
  4. Buy from an authorized NETGEAR reseller if you choose Orbi; NETGEAR says its limited warranty is valid only for products purchased from an authorized reseller. Linksys says warranty periods depend on the country of purchase.

What can affect real-world performance?

Neither Wi-Fi class nor a manufacturer’s maximum speed or range guarantees a result in a specific home. Linksys notes that actual speed, performance, and range depend on building materials, network traffic, client Wi-Fi standards, interference, obstructions, and other factors. The same practical limits apply when evaluating mesh systems generally. App functions and firmware behavior can change over time, so verify current details for your region and exact kit.
