A smart front door is a connected entry setup that can manage access, alert you to visitors, or both. It is a broad consumer term, not one standardized product type: the setup might be a smart lock, a video doorbell, or an integrated device that combines them.
What does “smart front door” mean?
The phrase describes technology added to a home’s entrance. Depending on the devices, it may let an authorized person lock or unlock the door, receive visitor alerts, see or speak with someone outside, or connect entry devices to a smart-home system.

A connected lock typically works as part of a system: the lock hardware communicates with an authorized controller, such as a phone or keypad, over a wireless link. Some setups also rely on an app, cloud service, or separate gateway. The exact functions depend on the model and its integrations.

| Device | Main job | Possible features |
|---|---|---|
| Smart lock | Controls locking and access | App control, keypad codes, fingerprints, guest access, access records, or auto-locking; features vary by model. |
| Smart doorbell | Signals or detects visitors | Visitor alerts, a camera, or two-way audio, depending on the device. |
| Integrated lock and doorbell | Combines entry control with visitor functions | May offer both access management and visitor notifications in one product. |
A smart lock does not necessarily include a camera, and a smart doorbell does not necessarily control the lock. Check the device’s listed features rather than assuming they come together.

Does a smart front door work remotely?
Not always. A lock may support local control over Bluetooth while remote commands or alerts require an internet connection, a compatible hub, or a separate gateway. Xiaomi, for example, says remote visitor reminders and smart-device linkage for its Automatic Smart Door Lock require a separately purchased Bluetooth gateway. Confirm which functions work locally and what extra equipment remote access requires.

- Access methods: Choose the entry options you need, and check whether physical keys or another fallback are available.
- Remote features: Find out whether app control and alerts work away from home and whether they require a hub or gateway.
- Compatibility: Verify support for your phone, smart-home platform, and region. Compatibility can vary even among models from the same manufacturer.
- Power backup: Check the battery arrangement and the specific emergency method, if any. Some products provide backup keys or an external power connection; there is no universal fallback.
- Outdoor exposure and security: Look for the individual product’s weather rating and stated security controls. These specifications should not be generalized across the category.
For a concrete example of why model-level checks matter, TP-Link lists IP65 exterior weather resistance, BHMA Grade 2, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and 128-bit AES with SSL/TLS for the Tapo DL110. These are claims for that lock, not category-wide guarantees. TP-Link Tapo DL110 specifications.
