Return safe, meaningful HTTP responses to the browser, while collecting frontend exceptions and backend telemetry for diagnosis. A unified vendor SDK approach can simplify exception capture; a mixed setup can preserve OpenTelemetry instrumentation and add React monitoring. Choose based on the context your team needs, what captures backend exceptions, and how much telemetry routing and data handling you want to operate.
Two different kinds of errors need two different paths
An API error is a response the shopper’s browser receives. It should use an appropriate HTTP status and a deliberate, limited response body. A monitoring event or trace is telemetry for the development team; it can carry diagnostic context that should not be exposed in an API response.

In FastAPI, a route can raise HTTPException with a status code and detail for the client. FastAPI’s error-handling guide describes 400–499 responses as client errors and shows a 404 for a missing item. Keep client details useful without putting internal stack traces or sensitive data into the response. The guide does not define a complete e-commerce error schema, so decide on stable application-level response conventions for cases such as unavailable inventory or invalid checkout input. See FastAPI’s error-handling documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMonitoring is separate: frontend instrumentation can report browser exceptions and activity, while backend instrumentation can record API request spans and, if explicitly configured, exceptions. A failed checkout response may be expected business behavior, an application bug, or a network problem; the response code alone does not provide the diagnostic context developers need.

Decide where React runs before choosing frontend instrumentation
React can be deployed on its own or built into static files served by FastAPI. The deployment choice changes where the browser loads the frontend from, but does not change the basic monitoring boundary: instrument the JavaScript that actually runs in the shopper’s browser, and instrument the FastAPI service separately.
Serving a built React app from FastAPI
FastAPI’s app.frontend() helper can serve generated static build output, such as a dist directory. FastAPI path operations take precedence over frontend files. For client-side routes, the fallback can return index.html when a browser navigates to a route handled by the React app; missing JavaScript, CSS, and image assets still return 404. This serves static output and does not run server-side rendering. Details are in the FastAPI frontend guide.
If the frontend is hosted separately, configure and deploy monitoring for that origin instead. In either topology, make sure the browser’s API requests can carry trace context to the FastAPI service if you want frontend and backend activity connected.

Capture React exceptions and browser context
A React monitoring SDK can capture frontend exceptions and browser context. Sentry documents its React SDK, @sentry/react, and browser tracing configuration. Its guidance recommends initializing instrumentation early in the application entry point and describes connecting browser activity with API calls in traces. See Sentry’s React monitoring overview and its frontend monitoring overview.
For production builds, source maps help map minified JavaScript locations back to source code. Treat their upload and access as part of your release process; the cited overview material supports the general value of source maps but does not specify a complete release workflow. Review which browser data and user context the SDK collects, and configure it to avoid sending information your team does not need.
Instrument FastAPI requests—and choose exception capture deliberately
OpenTelemetry Python Contrib documents FastAPIInstrumentor.instrument_app(app) for adding request instrumentation to a FastAPI application. Its integration supports URL exclusions, request and response hooks, and optional capture of selected headers. Those controls let teams avoid instrumenting certain routes or attach carefully chosen context. The FastAPI instrumentation documentation also describes sanitizing sensitive headers, including personally identifiable information, session keys, and passwords.

Header capture is a privacy decision, not a harmless debugging default. Capture only what is needed, and use the documented sanitization configuration for sensitive values. Avoid collecting authentication credentials or other secrets in telemetry.
Also distinguish request spans from exception events. Sentry’s technical article explains that OpenTelemetry instrumentation alone does not capture and send backend errors to Sentry. If the team needs backend exception events in addition to traces, evaluate a Sentry backend SDK or another explicit exception-capture mechanism. Do not assume that exporting FastAPI spans automatically provides the same exception details as a dedicated error-capture integration. See Sentry’s explanation of how its SDK and OpenTelemetry can work together.
Connect browser and backend activity with trace context
Separate frontend and backend events are harder to follow when they cannot be associated with the same request. Sentry’s technical walkthrough describes using a frontend SDK with backend OpenTelemetry instrumentation and propagating W3C traceparent context across requests. That lets a team investigate a browser action alongside the corresponding API work, provided both sides are configured to accept and retain the trace context.

Backend telemetry can be exported directly to a destination or routed through an OpenTelemetry Collector. In Sentry’s article, direct OTLP export is presented as a simpler option for a single-backend setup; a Collector is useful when central routing, processing, multiple services, or multiple export destinations matter. The article’s stated OTLP ingest support is specific to the time it was published: it describes traces and logs, not metrics. Check current product documentation before relying on a particular ingest capability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a unified SDK or a mixed OpenTelemetry setup
There is no evidence here that one approach is universally cheaper, faster, more reliable, or more privacy-preserving. Compare what each setup captures and how it fits your existing operations.
| Decision point | What to establish |
|---|---|
| React context | Whether the frontend setup captures exceptions, useful browser context, tracing, source maps, and any replay features you intend to configure. |
| Backend exceptions | Whether backend exceptions are captured explicitly, or whether the setup emits request spans and logs without exception events. |
| Cross-stack continuity | Whether browser requests propagate trace context that the FastAPI instrumentation and telemetry destination accept. |
| Existing instrumentation | Whether your OpenTelemetry setup can remain in place and where its telemetry is exported. |
| Routing complexity | Whether direct export is sufficient, or whether you need a Collector for routing, processing, or multiple destinations. |
| Data minimization | Which headers and user fields are collected, excluded, or sanitized. |
| Client response behavior | Whether API responses use stable status codes and safe details independently of internal diagnostic data. |
When a unified vendor SDK is a practical fit
Consider a vendor SDK on both frontend and backend when the team wants a more direct path to exception capture and a single destination for related events. Verify that the backend integration captures the exceptions you care about, not just request activity, and that the required trace context is propagated across the browser-to-API boundary.
When a mixed setup is a practical fit
Keep OpenTelemetry backend instrumentation when it is already established or when its routing and processing model suits the service. Add a React monitoring SDK for browser exceptions and tracing, then connect the two with trace context. Add an explicit backend error-capture path if backend exceptions need to appear as error events. Sentry’s vendor-authored walkthrough describes this combined pattern; it is an integration option, not an independent comparative test.
A practical implementation sequence
- Define API behavior. Decide which HTTP statuses and safe response details the React client should receive for expected failures and unexpected server errors. Keep diagnostic stack traces out of client responses.
- Instrument the browser app. Initialize the React monitoring SDK early, configure browser tracing for relevant API calls, and arrange source maps for production debugging.
- Instrument FastAPI. Add OpenTelemetry FastAPI instrumentation or a backend vendor SDK, based on your existing setup and whether you need spans, exception events, or both.
- Connect traces. Configure trace-context propagation across browser requests and verify the same request can be followed from frontend activity to the FastAPI service.
- Set collection boundaries. Exclude unnecessary routes and headers, sanitize sensitive values, and review user context before enabling collection.
- Choose an export path. Use direct export for a suitably simple destination, or add a Collector if you need shared processing, routing, or multiple destinations.
- Validate failures intentionally. Confirm that a client receives the intended status and safe detail, that frontend exceptions are visible, and that backend spans and any configured exception events reach the intended destination.
What this choice does—and does not—tell you
These integration capabilities help a team decide how to collect and correlate diagnostic data. They do not establish which service has better performance, pricing, reliability, or privacy for a particular commerce workload, nor do they show that monitoring prevents checkout failures or increases revenue. Treat those as separate evaluation questions and validate them against your own requirements.
