Comparison articles published in 2026 point to eight credible options, but they do not establish a consistent, independently tested top ten. The useful choice is the platform whose verified features match your workflow—not an arbitrary ranking.
Start with the job your website needs to do
A public portfolio and a client-gallery workflow solve different problems. General-purpose builders can provide image-led pages alongside service descriptions, a blog, booking, or commerce. Photography-focused services may combine galleries with proofing, image delivery, storage, or print fulfillment. Some platforms offer both, but the precise features can depend on the product and subscription.

- Portfolio and business presence: Prioritize presentation, page design, and the ability to add the pages and functions your business needs.
- Client selection and delivery: Check how clients view galleries, choose images, and receive final files.
- Print sales: Establish whether ordering and lab fulfillment are built in, integrated, or handled elsewhere.
- Large image libraries: Compare storage limits and how the service handles image resolution and compression.
- Studio workflow: Identify whether booking or management tools are included or require separate products.
These distinctions matter more than a low advertised starting price: the plan that supports the actual workflow is the meaningful comparison.
Eight photography website builders to consider
The options below appear across the comparison pages published by Pixpa, How Web Design, Site Builder Report, and Entro. Those sources do not all cover the same services or use the same criteria. This is a use-case guide, not a universal ranking or a claim of hands-on testing by this article.

| Builder | What the comparisons associate it with | Consider it if | Verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squarespace | Design-led templates and a broader business website; one comparison also emphasizes blogging and ecommerce relative to Format. | You want a polished portfolio alongside general website pages. | Whether the plan and current integrations cover your client proofing or print workflow. |
| Wix | A flexible general-purpose editor with a broad template and app ecosystem. | You value layout control and want to assemble a site around varied business needs. | Current template, app, and plan availability, plus the setup effort for your desired features. |
| Pixpa | A photographer-oriented all-in-one option combining portfolio, gallery, and selling features in the comparisons. | You want several photography-site functions under one service. | Plan-specific features and current pricing. Pixpa’s own comparison is commercially published by a service it recommends, so treat its self-favoring claims accordingly. |
| Pixieset | Client-gallery delivery, proofing, and print fulfillment. | Client delivery and sales are central to your work. | Which website, gallery, and studio-management capabilities are included together and which involve separate products or subscriptions. |
| Format | A portfolio-focused service with client proofing and Lightroom-related workflow features. | You want a portfolio and client selection tools. | Storage and ecommerce limits for the specific plan you would use. |
| SmugMug | Photo hosting, client galleries, storage, and print sales. | You manage substantial photo libraries or sell prints through galleries. | Current storage allowances and print fulfillment terms. |
| Zenfolio | Galleries, proofing, sales, and studio workflows. | Your work depends on event or wedding galleries and related business processes. | Which workflow features your plan includes and the full recurring cost. |
| WordPress | Control and customization for photographers with specific requirements. | You are comfortable taking responsibility for configuration and maintenance. | Whether a recommendation refers to self-hosted WordPress.org or WordPress.com; comparisons do not always make that distinction consistently. |
How to choose without overpaying
Write down the client journey
Map what happens from a prospective client finding your work to receiving the finished images. If the site only needs to attract inquiries, a broad business builder may be enough. If clients must review galleries, select photographs, or order prints, confirm those steps are supported before subscribing.
Check the image workflow, not just the template
Ask what happens to full-resolution files, how much storage is included, and whether client downloads or proofing are part of the plan. A visually strong portfolio is not automatically a delivery system, and a gallery service may not offer the design flexibility you want for the public-facing site.

Calculate the recurring cost for the complete setup
Compare the plan that includes the features you will actually use, the billing frequency, renewal terms, and any separate gallery or studio subscription. Prices reported in comparison articles can reflect different dates, billing periods, or introductory offers. A May 2026 Pixpa comparison reported annual-plan prices from $5.40 per month for Basic to $15 per month for Advanced; those are publisher-reported figures, not verified current quotes, and should not be treated as renewal prices. Check the provider’s current terms before committing.
Test the real visitor and client experience
Preview the site on a phone and desktop, then walk through a gallery or purchase flow if those functions matter. Look for friction such as unclear navigation, slow-loading image-heavy pages, confusing selection controls, or a checkout that does not match how you sell.
Rank #3
What “best” means in these comparisons
The reviewed publishers reach different conclusions because they emphasize different needs: visual design, proofing, Lightroom workflows, gallery delivery, print sales, or breadth of website features. The comparisons are useful for identifying candidates, but they are not a single standardized test. In particular, a source describing a service as tested does not mean this article independently tested it.
For portfolio-first presentation, compare Squarespace and Format against your design and proofing needs. For a flexible general-purpose editor, assess Wix. For a bundled photography-oriented setup, examine Pixpa and Pixieset closely, including whether your required functions span separate subscriptions. For hosting, client galleries, or print sales, compare SmugMug and Zenfolio on the exact plan terms. For custom requirements, consider WordPress while accounting for its additional setup and maintenance responsibilities.
