For a compatible PCIe 5.0 system, the Samsung 9100 PRO and WD_BLACK SN8100 are current high-end NVMe options; their advertised sequential speeds are peak ratings, not a promise that every game or application will run equally faster.
Which fast M.2 SSDs are worth considering?
These two PCIe 5.0 x4 drives publish top-end sequential performance. Their figures come from manufacturer specifications, so they should not be read as directly comparable to independent review benchmarks.

| Drive | Interface and form factor | Rated peak sequential read | Rated peak sequential write | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung 9100 PRO | PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0, M.2 2280 | Up to 14,800 MB/s | Up to 13,400 MB/s | Samsung says to verify PCIe 5.0 support in the host; a heatsink version is available. Samsung product specifications |
| WD_BLACK SN8100 | PCIe Gen 5 x4, NVMe 2.0, M.2 2280 | Up to 14,900 MB/s | Up to 14,000 MB/s for 2 TB and 4 TB; up to 11,000 MB/s for 1 TB | SanDisk documents heatsink and non-heatsink variants; maximum speeds require a PCIe Gen 5 NVMe M.2 host. SanDisk data sheet and host compatibility guidance |
The 9100 PRO peak figures are Samsung-published specifications from 2025. The SN8100 read figure is a SanDisk data-sheet specification accessed in 2026, not an independent benchmark. A small difference between their rated sequential peaks does not establish which drive is faster in a particular game, creative application, or sustained transfer.
Will a PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSD work at full speed in your PC?
Only if the specific M.2 socket, motherboard, and CPU provide the required PCIe 5.0 NVMe support. M.2 names the physical drive format; it does not guarantee that a slot uses NVMe or supports a particular PCIe generation. A compatible Gen 5 drive installed in a lower-generation slot can operate at that slot’s supported rate, but will not reach its Gen 5 peak specification.

- MEET THE NEXT GEN: Consider this a cheat code; Our Samsung 990 PRO Gen4 SSD helps you reach near max performance with lightning-fast speeds; Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a tech guru, you’ll get power efficiency built for the final boss
- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
- Check the motherboard manual for the target socket’s protocol and PCIe generation.
- Verify the board and CPU lane support for that specific slot. Slot capabilities can differ on the same motherboard.
- Look for lane-sharing notes that could affect a graphics card or other expansion device.
- Confirm that the drive’s M.2 2280 length and heatsink dimensions fit the slot and enclosure.
For a PlayStation 5 installation, consult Sony’s current M.2 SSD requirements for fit, heatsink, and performance before choosing a drive. Compatibility should be checked for the precise model and heatsink configuration rather than assumed from the interface alone.
How to choose based on your workload
Gaming
For a gaming PC, first confirm slot compatibility and choose the capacity you need for your library. Very high sequential throughput alone does not prove a universal or dramatic reduction in game load times. Look for independent testing of the games and system you care about, and treat results as specific to each review’s test platform and method. PC Gamer’s SSD coverage discusses gaming-drive considerations, including cooling and sustained behavior.

Large creative files and frequent transfers
Sequential ratings can be useful when moving large files, but ask whether a review tested sustained transfers and performance after the drive’s write cache fills. A peak specification does not describe how long that rate can be maintained. For editing or other demanding work, also look for workload-specific random I/O results rather than relying on one sequential number.
General upgrades and mixed use
If your current computer does not support PCIe 5.0, paying for a Gen 5 drive’s peak rating may not provide the rated interface speed. Compare compatible drives using real-world tests for your applications, alongside capacity, endurance warranty, and local price per usable terabyte. Current prices, firmware, availability, and benchmark rankings change; check them for your region and purchase date. TechRadar’s SSD roundup provides editorial and independent-test context, but its measured results belong to its own system and workloads.

Cooling and physical fit matter
High-performance drives can need appropriate thermal management, particularly under sustained workloads. Check whether the drive you are buying includes a heatsink and whether that version clears the motherboard, case, and any slot cover. If the board’s M.2 heatsink is intended for use with a bare drive, follow the motherboard and SSD makers’ fit guidance; do not stack an integrated SSD heatsink beneath a board cover unless the hardware makers confirm that arrangement is suitable. Not every installation requires an aftermarket heatsink.

- Identify the exact slot. Use the motherboard manual to confirm NVMe support, PCIe generation, CPU lane requirements, and any lane-sharing limitations.
- Choose capacity before chasing peak speed. Match usable space to your games, projects, and expected growth; compare warranty and endurance specifications for the exact capacity SKU.
- Compare the right performance evidence. Separate manufacturer-rated sequential peaks from independently measured results. For your workload, check random I/O and sustained-transfer tests where available.
- Confirm thermal and dimensional fit. Check the specific heatsink SKU, M.2 2280 clearance, and whether the motherboard’s own cover is compatible.
- Check current local value. Compare the price per usable terabyte and current availability in your region rather than relying on an old ranking or price.
Power consumption can matter in compact or battery-powered systems, but its impact depends on the platform and usage; confirm relevant system-specific measurements before treating it as a deciding advantage.
