What makes a TV good for animation?
Animation can contain large areas of vivid color, fine gradients, and bright highlights. For HDR titles, HDR color volume is useful because it describes how well a TV reproduces colors at different brightness levels. A TV may cover a broad range of hues at moderate brightness yet struggle to keep saturated colors bright.

Color volume is not the same as color accuracy. A TV can produce an expansive, punchy palette while shifting the colors the filmmakers intended. RTINGS evaluates accuracy through color, white balance, gamma, and color temperature; its SDR color-accuracy methodology is especially relevant if you plan to use the TV’s default picture mode rather than calibrate it.

Choose based on the kind of content you watch
HDR animation
For HDR movies, compare measured HDR color volume alongside contrast and HDR brightness. RTINGS uses reference ranges of 1,000 cd/m² for DCI-P3 coverage and 10,000 cd/m² for BT.2020 coverage in its HDR color-volume comparisons; these are test references, not typical brightness levels for TVs or universal buying thresholds. RTINGS describes measured color luminance greater than 650 cd/m² as a “good value” in that test, not as a guarantee that a TV will look right with every title.

Gamut coverage tells you how much of a color space a display can reproduce; color volume also accounts for brightness. Neither measure alone says whether the picture is accurate or whether a TV handles a particular movie well.
SDR animation
Do not assume every animated movie or show uses HDR or a wide color gamut. Most SDR movies and shows use Rec.709, according to RTINGS’ SDR color-volume explanation, though some use DCI-P3 or BT.2020. For a mostly SDR library, accurate color in an appropriate SDR mode matters more than a TV’s ability to display extreme HDR colors.

Match the TV to your room and seating
Dark room or evening viewing
Contrast is important for movie viewing: it helps preserve separation between dark backgrounds and bright details. HDR brightness also matters for highlights, but it should be considered alongside color performance rather than treated as a substitute for it. RTINGS’ 2026 movie-TV guide, updated September 23, 2026, discusses these movie-related trade-offs and includes OLED options. It is a general movie guide, not a test proving one TV is best for animation.
Bright room or daytime viewing
In a bright room, reflections can distract from the picture, so compare reflection handling as well as brightness. A display with impressive dark-room contrast may not be the best fit if windows or lamps create visible reflections during the hours you watch.

Group viewing from different seats
If people watch from across a wide sofa or from seats off to the side, check viewing-angle performance. Color and other picture characteristics can change away from the center seat; RTINGS explains these effects in its TV viewing-angle testing overview. A strong center-seat result does not necessarily mean everyone in the room will see the same colors.

- HDR color volume and gamut: relevant for saturated HDR scenes, but not a stand-in for accuracy.
- Color accuracy: check results in the most accurate out-of-box mode if you do not plan to calibrate.
- Contrast and HDR brightness: weigh both against how bright or dark the room is.
- Viewing angle: important when viewers sit well off center.
- Reflection handling: important for daytime viewing or rooms with strong ambient light.
- Price, size, and stock: verify these for the exact model and screen size you are considering; they change over time.
The available sources do not establish a ranked list of TVs proven best for animated movies, nor do they provide current model prices or availability. Treat 4K OLED as a sensible category to investigate, not a model-level verdict. Confirm the measurements and listing for the specific screen size you might buy.

Begin with an accurate picture mode rather than choosing the most vivid preset simply because it makes colors look stronger. RTINGS describes Filmmaker Mode as a starting point intended to reduce extra image and motion processing; the best setting still depends on the TV and your preferences. After choosing a suitable mode, check that the TV is using the right picture settings for the content and viewing environment. If a cartoon looks oversaturated, unusually bright, or unnaturally smooth, compare the accurate mode with the current setting before changing multiple controls at once. Vividness and faithful color reproduction are different goals.
