It describes how a chip is mounted—not what the chip does.
What does chip on board mean?
In a conventional integrated circuit, the die is enclosed in its own package before that packaged part is mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB). With COB, the die is attached directly to the board or substrate, so there is no separate chip package between the die and the assembly.

The electrical connection is made on the board. Wire bonding is one possible method; flip-chip is another. The term COB identifies the die’s mounting and interconnection arrangement, not a particular connection technique or chip function. What is the black blob on a circuit board?
A black blob on a board may be an epoxy glob top covering a bare die and its connections. The covering protects the assembly, but its appearance alone cannot establish what function the die performs or whether it is wire-bonded or flip-chip connected. So, a black epoxy covering can be a clue that an assembly uses COB, but it is not enough to identify the underlying component or determine its internal construction.
How COB differs from a packaged IC

The structural difference does not establish a universal cost, thermal, or reliability advantage. Those outcomes depend on the design and manufacturing process, so they require application-specific evidence.

Is chip on board the same as a COB LED?
No. COB LED modules are one lighting application of the broader chip-on-board approach. In that context, LED dies are assembled directly on a substrate; in other electronics, COB can be used for different chip functions. The general term does not mean that every COB assembly is an LED. Can a chip-on-board component be replaced?
Do not assume that a COB die can be replaced like a separately packaged IC. Because the die is mounted and interconnected directly on the board and may be covered with protective material, serviceability depends on the particular board, assembly, and repair process. Assess the complete assembly before concluding that the die is independently replaceable.
