Chinese Startup Unveils FlintNano EUV Light-Source Prototype—Why ASML’s Lead Remains Intact

Langdao Silex has displayed a claimed 15-watt EUV light-source prototype. It is a notable Chinese component milestone, but no evidence yet shows a complete production scanner capable of matching ASML.

Short answer: Langdao Silex has shown an experimental extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) light source, not a complete chip-making machine. The Chinese startup says its FlintNano LPP-OXXO source delivers at least 15 watts of 13.5-nanometer EUV, but those figures are company claims reported by Wccftech, not independently verified production results.

The demonstration is a meaningful component milestone and evidence of China’s growing semiconductor-equipment capability. It does not yet show production wafers, a complete scanner, ASML-level throughput or a commercial replacement for ASML’s EUV systems.

What Langdao Silex actually unveiled

At the 26th China International Industry Fair in Shanghai, Langdao Silex displayed the FlintNano LPP-OXXO, a laser-produced-plasma (LPP) EUV light-source prototype. The source is the subsystem that creates EUV radiation; it is not the scanner that aligns a mask, moves wafers and prints transistor patterns.

Langdao Silex says approximately 90% of the source’s core components are localized through its own research and development. The company also says the system is intended for wafer-exposure testing and estimates three to five years before large-scale commercial production. That timetable is an estimate from the company, not an independently validated delivery schedule.

Specifications reported for the prototype

Metric Langdao Silex claim What the figure describes
Driving laser 1,000 W The laser power used to drive the plasma process, not the EUV output delivered to a scanner.
Repetition rate 1–20 kHz How frequently the source can repeat its plasma-generating cycle.
Conversion efficiency More than 2% The share of driving-laser energy converted into EUV energy, according to the company.
EUV output At least 15 W Reported EUV source output; the operating conditions and measurement method were not independently published in the available report.
Continuous operation More than 100 hours Company-reported endurance for the prototype.
Plasma size 60 micrometers The stated scale of the emitting plasma region.
Plasma stability 3% RMS Reported variation in plasma behavior.
Energy stability About 5% Reported variation in emitted energy.
Localization About 90% Langdao Silex’s estimate for localization of core components.

The most important distinction is between the 1,000-watt driving laser and the claimed 15-watt EUV output. They are not interchangeable measures of a scanner’s capability. A source can require very high input power while producing a much smaller amount of usable EUV after conversion and optical losses.

How an EUV light source works

EUV lithography uses light at a wavelength of 13.5 nanometers. In an LPP source, powerful laser pulses strike tiny tin droplets in near-vacuum conditions. The impact creates a hot tin plasma that emits EUV radiation.

EUV cannot travel through ordinary lenses or air: almost every material absorbs it. The radiation therefore has to be collected and redirected with multilayer mirrors inside a vacuum system. ASML says its source architecture generates tens of thousands of tin-droplet plasma events per second, while the optical system uses mirrors with more than 100 precision-engineered layers.

That makes source output only one part of the engineering problem. The source must also deliver repeatable pulses, control tin debris and contamination, protect expensive optics, maintain vacuum conditions and operate for long periods without unacceptable downtime.

Why this is not a complete EUV machine

A production EUV scanner combines the source with an optical column, reticle and wafer stages, alignment systems, vacuum and contamination controls, masks, photoresists, software and factory-level service infrastructure. The FlintNano announcement does not establish that Langdao Silex has integrated all of those elements into a production scanner.

  • Wafer results: No independent evidence in the available report demonstrates production-quality chips or repeatable patterning on commercial wafers.
  • Throughput: No ASML-comparable wafer-per-hour result is reported.
  • Optics and stages: The announcement does not provide evidence of a complete projection-optics and precision-stage system.
  • Contamination control: The report does not document long-term protection of collector mirrors from tin debris.
  • Commercial status: The system is described as suitable for exposure testing, with large-scale production estimated three to five years away.

Consequently, calling the exhibit an “EUV machine” overstates what has been demonstrated. It is more accurately described as an EUV source prototype that could support further exposure-system development.

How the claim compares with ASML’s source development

ASML’s own published history illustrates why source demonstrations must be judged over years of reliability and integration work, not by a single headline number.

Milestone ASML’s stated source history Why it matters
2010 First prototype produced 1 W Established a workable EUV-source approach at very low output.
2018 Reached 250 W Showed substantial scaling after years of engineering.
2022 Built a 500 W prototype Demonstrated another major increase in source power.
April 2025 Demonstrated a 1,000 W source ASML describes this as a demonstration, not an immediately available commercial source.

ASML says the 1,000-watt demonstration was built on 25 years of engineering work. Jayson Stewart, ASML’s head of source research, said the company believes a commercial 1,000-watt source will still take time, while describing the demonstration as validation of an approach that can scale to higher power.

This comparison is not a claim that the two figures are measured under identical conditions. Langdao Silex reports a 1,000-watt driving laser and at least 15 watts of EUV output; ASML’s timeline refers to source-power milestones. The public data does not provide enough detail to calculate a like-for-like performance ranking.

What separate Chinese research shows

A related Chinese Academy of Sciences effort provides useful technical context but should not be confused with the Langdao Silex product announcement. Researchers at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics built a tin-plasma EUV platform driven by a 1-micrometer solid-state laser.

The Chinese Journal of Lasers record reports a maximum conversion efficiency of 3.42%, measured at a laser peak power density of 8.24×1010 W/cm2, with EUV radiation centered around 13.5 nanometers. The result was published online in 2024 and appeared in the 2025 issue. It is a laboratory research result, not evidence that a commercial scanner is ready.

The work was led by Lin Nan, a former ASML researcher, according to the South China Morning Post. The same report quoted ASML chief executive Christophe Fouquet saying that generating some EUV light is always possible, but that it would take “many, many years” for China to make an EUV machine.

Why ASML is not immediately displaced

ASML’s industrial lead comes from integrating thousands of difficult systems into a reliable manufacturing tool, not simply from producing EUV photons. A competing platform would need to prove all of the following at once:

  • Stable, high-power EUV generation over a factory-relevant duty cycle.
  • Collector mirrors and projection optics that survive contamination and retain performance.
  • Nanometer-scale wafer and reticle stage control with repeatable alignment.
  • Vacuum, debris-management and thermal systems that support continuous operation.
  • Masks, photoresists, metrology and process software qualified for advanced nodes.
  • High wafer throughput, predictable uptime, maintainability and global service.

The FlintNano announcement addresses an important source-level problem, but it does not document those system-level results. A 15-watt source suitable for testing can be valuable for research while remaining far below the requirements of a high-volume semiconductor fab.

What would constitute a real challenge

The next decisive evidence would be independently measured EUV output under stated conditions, repeatable operation over much longer test periods, documented collector-mirror lifetime, and exposure results on wafers. A credible production challenge would also require published throughput, overlay and uptime figures from a complete scanner, followed by customer installation and sustained fab operation.

Until those milestones appear, the most accurate interpretation is measured optimism: China is building domestic expertise in a strategically important EUV-source component, and Langdao Silex’s prototype may help expand that effort. The announcement does not show that China has built a production EUV scanner or that ASML’s practical dominance has ended.
