If text suddenly looks like Chinese lettering on a Windows PC, first check where it happens and whether you are typing new characters or seeing existing text rendered differently. A problem limited to one document or app points toward its font settings; changes across Windows call for checking language settings and, if needed, Windows system files. The available report matching this symptom does not establish one confirmed cause or a lasting fix.
First, identify what is changing
Chinese-looking characters do not by themselves mean Windows has switched languages. They can reflect a font substitution, a display-language setting, or a broader system problem. Use these checks to narrow down the cause before changing settings.

- Check the scope: Does it happen in one document or app, or also in other Windows areas such as File Explorer?
- Check the behavior: Does existing text change appearance, or are newly typed characters wrong?
- Record what you see: Note the affected app, whether all text or only some characters change, and when it happens. Take a screenshot if possible.
A keyboard-layout change affects how keys enter characters; Microsoft says it does not change the Windows display language. So if existing text or interface labels look different without you typing, changing the keyboard layout is unlikely to address the display problem. See Microsoft’s Windows language and keyboard-layout guidance.
If it happens in one document or app, check the font
Look at the font assigned to the affected text and confirm that the intended font is installed. Microsoft explains that Office may substitute the closest available font when a document uses a font that is missing, which can make text look different.

For East Asian fonts, Microsoft’s guidance says adding the relevant language in Windows 10 can download associated fonts for Office documents. Windows also provides supplemental language-font options in its font settings for Windows 10 and 11. See Microsoft’s East Asian font guidance for Office and Manage fonts in Windows.
Use the app’s supported font controls and obtain fonts only from a source you trust. If the text looks wrong in only one app, check that app’s document or font settings before changing Windows-wide language options.

If Windows itself changes, verify language settings
In Windows 11, open Settings → Time & language → Language & region. Check the installed languages and the Windows display language. Microsoft’s language-settings guidance covers Windows 10 and 11, though labels and page layouts can vary by version.

Change the input language only if the characters being entered are wrong. If Windows interface text itself has changed, review the display-language setting instead. Avoid removing a language or changing the system locale casually: a legacy non-Unicode app may depend on the current locale.

If the problem affects Windows broadly, run built-in repair tools
If the symptom appears across multiple Windows areas and persists after checking language settings, Microsoft documents using Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) followed by System File Checker (SFC) to check and repair Windows components and system files. These tools do not establish that font substitution is the cause.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Run
sfc /scannowand let the scan complete. - Restart Windows, then check whether the symptom returns.
Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions if you need details about running the commands or interpreting results.

If it keeps happening, give support useful details
The matching ElevenForum thread was opened on August 25, 2026, by a user reporting Windows 11 Home 25H2, build 26200.8737. The user described intermittent Chinese-looking lettering while moving files and opening a newly created folder, and reported that the symptom returned after trying a system-locale suggestion and running SFC. That individual report is not a verified diagnosis, and it does not show that either step fixed the underlying cause. See the ElevenForum discussion.
If you contact Microsoft or the affected app’s support team, include your Windows version and build, the app or document involved, a screenshot, whether the issue affects one document or several Windows areas, any recent font or language changes, and the results of DISM and SFC. This helps distinguish a document-font issue from a broader Windows problem.
