Usually, parents do not need to disable every child’s smartphone camera by default. Start by checking which apps can use it and removing access from apps that do not need it. Consider a broader restriction when the child’s age, circumstances, or a specific privacy concern makes that the better fit. Explain the rule and revisit it as needs change.
What does “turn off the camera” mean?
There are several ways to restrict a phone camera, and they do not have the same effect:

- Remove permission from an app: That app cannot use the camera, while other apps may retain access.
- Hide or restrict the built-in Camera app: This limits access to the app, but is not necessarily the same as blocking camera access across the device.
- Use a broader system restriction: Depending on the device and software version, this may limit camera access more widely.
Choose the narrowest restriction that addresses the concern. A blanket rule may also prevent camera functions needed for school, accessibility, communication, or creative work.

- Identify the reason. Is one app concerning, or is the decision about the child’s age, a family privacy rule, or a particular circumstance?
- Review access app by app. Keep camera permission for apps the child legitimately needs, if appropriate, and remove it from apps without a clear need.
- Consider a broader restriction only when it fits. It may make sense if the child does not need camera functions or a specific concern calls for a simpler boundary. Explain what will stop working and how the child can ask for access when needed.
- Revisit the settings. Check permissions after installing apps and periodically as the child’s needs and independence change.
What iPhone and iPad controls can do
Apple says third-party apps must obtain consent before accessing the camera. Once permission is granted, an app can access real-time images from the front and rear cameras. Parents can use Screen Time and Content & Privacy Restrictions to manage a child’s apps, features, and privacy settings. The available controls and menu locations can vary by software version, age, and region, so check the current settings on the child’s device. Photos and videos may contain location and other metadata. If location sharing is the concern, review Camera’s Location Services and the device’s sharing options rather than assuming that disabling camera access is the only relevant setting. What Android controls can do
Android lets users review and change camera permissions for individual apps. On supported child devices and accounts, Family Link can help a parent review or manage app permissions. Menu names and controls vary by Android version and device maker; see Google’s Family Link app-permissions guidance.

Android’s Privacy Dashboard can show which apps used permissions and when. Google’s current Android Help page says its history covers the last seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. Those windows are specific to those versions, not a general guarantee for every Android device. Consult Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions for details. Android also provides camera and microphone controls and use indicators; their availability and placement can vary. Android’s privacy overview describes its privacy settings.

Revoking permission stops the affected app from using the camera through that permission, but it can also break camera-dependent features. Google cautions that some apps may not work correctly when permissions are turned off. Check whether the child relies on a feature before removing access.

Use indicators and permission histories as review aids, not proof that every privacy risk has been eliminated. Apple states that apps are not allowed to use the camera without transparency that it is in use, but indicators and histories are not a substitute for checking permissions and the child’s apps. The official platform guidance cited here does not establish a universal level of camera risk for children or say that every child’s camera must be disabled.

A workable family rule
- Tell the child which apps may use the camera and why.
- Explain what a restriction will disable and how to request access for a legitimate need.
- Review permissions when installing apps and at sensible intervals; use Android’s Privacy Dashboard where available and review Screen Time and privacy settings on Apple devices.
- Adjust the rule as the child’s needs, maturity, and circumstances change.
