Chief Knowledge Officer: What the Role Means and What It Does

A chief knowledge officer guides how an organization identifies, preserves, shares, and uses knowledge. The remit varies, but commonly combines strategy, people, practices, and systems.

A chief knowledge officer (CKO) is a senior leader responsible for helping an organization identify, preserve, share, and put its knowledge to use. The role is broader than managing documents or databases: it usually brings together people, working practices, and systems so that useful expertise can be found, reused, and carried forward. The exact remit varies by organization.

What does a chief knowledge officer do?

A CKO guides an organization’s knowledge agenda: what knowledge matters, how it is captured and shared, and how people can apply it in their work. The goal is not simply to collect information. It is to make relevant knowledge accessible and useful, including expertise that might otherwise remain with one team or person.

Common responsibilities include assessing what knowledge an organization has and where gaps exist, setting knowledge-management processes, encouraging employees to contribute and reuse knowledge, supporting learning, and evaluating whether knowledge initiatives are working. Depending on the organization, the CKO may also advise leaders and programs, promote lessons learned, and support workforce development.

NASA offers one concrete example, not a universal job description. NASA says its CKO is responsible for “establishing, maintaining, and overseeing the standards and capabilities that support knowledge sharing and workforce development.” NASA’s agency-wide work also emphasizes critical knowledge, knowledge transfer, and lessons learned across programs and centers.

Why is the role more than document management?

Documents and digital systems can help preserve knowledge, but they do not by themselves ensure that people contribute useful experience, can find what they need, or apply lessons from earlier work. A CKO’s remit may therefore involve setting practices and standards, encouraging participation, enabling knowledge transfer, and supporting organizational learning alongside the tools used to store and access information.

This combination of people, processes, and systems is important when expertise is spread across teams or when continuity matters—for example, when a project ends, staff move on, or a later program can benefit from earlier lessons.

How does a CKO differ from a CIO?

The titles point to different primary concerns, though their work can intersect. A chief information officer (CIO) is generally centered on information technology and internal information systems. A CKO focuses on organizational knowledge: the practices and capabilities that help an organization preserve, share, learn from, and reuse what it knows. This is a broad distinction, not a universal division of duties.

What skills does a CKO need?

Knowledge leadership depends on influencing how people work across organizational boundaries, not just selecting tools. Sources discussing the role identify communication, listening, leadership, collaboration, project management, and the ability to advocate for knowledge practices as useful skills. NASA also highlights leadership and interpersonal skills in describing its agency CKO duties.

Professional development can include knowledge-management competencies and professional registration. CILIP describes registration in knowledge management, while NASA publishes knowledge-management competencies; these are examples of development resources, not universal requirements for holding the title.

Is there one standard CKO job description?

No. The title does not identify a standardized position with a fixed reporting line or responsibility list. A 2024 study in the Journal of Knowledge Management reports variation in CKO titles, training, and hierarchical position across organizations. The organization’s needs and structure shape whether the role emphasizes knowledge strategy, continuity, workforce learning, systems, or some combination.

For the same reason, the available sources do not establish that CKO positions are common across every sector, nor do they provide a dependable general salary figure. A particular vacancy’s description is the best guide to what that organization expects its CKO to own.
