ChibiRigKit is a beta open-source project that turns one character illustration into an editable, browser-playable 2D rig. The process is semi-automatic, not a one-click conversion: AI-assisted planning and visual decisions are followed by image processing, review, fixes, and validation. The maker says AI is not required once a character is built and ready to play.
What ChibiRigKit does
ChibiRigKit, by milkc0de, takes an existing character image through a workflow that prepares movable parts and facial variations for a shared browser runtime. The finished character can be animated in a browser player rather than requiring a separate character-specific application. The project’s maker describes the workflow and features in a DEV Community article about v1.0.0-beta.7.

The player’s documented features include blinking and gaze movement, head yaw, pitch and roll, hair and clothing motion, simple long-hair physics, camera-based face tracking, microphone-driven lip sync, motion recording and playback, custom backgrounds, WebM recording, and local OBS synchronization. These are project-documented capabilities, not independent test results.
How the single-image workflow works
One illustration is the starting point, not necessarily the complete finished rig. ChibiRigKit uses an iterative authoring process: plan the rig, generate its parts and data, validate the result, inspect comparison images and machine-readable reports, then review and fix problems before validating again. AI helps with semantic decisions in that process; conventional Python and Node.js tooling handles deterministic image and file operations.

- Start with a character illustration. The project is designed to derive rig components and variations from one image rather than requiring the artist to begin with a prepared set of layers.
- Generate and inspect the rig. The workflow creates movable parts and facial variations, then uses visual comparisons and reports to help identify artifacts.
- Review, correct, and validate again. The semi-automatic process includes human review and fixes; the project does not promise that every input image will produce a finished rig without intervention.
- Play or export the result. A character can be delivered as an HTML player or ZIP package, according to the project’s README.
What its head movement can—and cannot—do
The system stores nine head reference configurations: up, center, or down combined with left, center, or right. It interpolates among those poses, with roll applied separately. This creates a range of movement around a front-facing pose, but it is not a full 3D head turn. As the maker puts it, “This is not a 360-degree 3D reconstruction.” The result is a 2D deformation system, so it should not be mistaken for a volumetric model that can freely rotate to reveal a character’s profile or back.
Does the finished rig need AI or an internet connection?
The maker says the AI system is no longer required once a character has been built. That separates authoring from playback: AI assists the creation workflow, while the finished rig runs in the browser player. The available project documentation establishes that AI is not a playback dependency; it does not make a broader guarantee about every network or browser condition in which the player may be used.

Using ChibiRigKit with OBS and tracking inputs
The project documents camera-based face tracking and microphone-driven lip sync. It does not specify required webcam or microphone models, minimum device specifications, or hardware that has been independently tested. A webcam or microphone is therefore relevant only if you plan to use the corresponding tracking feature; the documentation does not support a particular purchase recommendation.

For OBS, the README describes a local integration server bound to 127.0.0.1. The controller shares settings and motion values, while an OBS browser source renders the character. The README says this integration server does not save or transfer camera video or microphone audio.

Current setup requirements and exports
The project is beta, so setup instructions can change. The current README lists Python 3.12 or later and Node.js 22 or later, plus a Chromium-based browser. Codex CLI is listed when using automatic rig creation. Consult the current README for the commands and platform-specific setup steps for macOS, Linux, or Windows; avoid treating version-specific prerequisites as permanent.
The documented export options are an HTML player and a ZIP package. The README does not establish that the project exports a conventional 3D model or a rig for every third-party animation tool.

License: code is not character artwork
The project’s source code is licensed under Apache License 2.0, as described in its GitHub README. That license does not automatically cover character illustrations, screenshots, video, logos, or other media associated with the project. Third-party components retain their own licenses and notices, and users remain responsible for having the rights to the artwork they provide. Check the applicable license for each asset rather than assuming that permission to use the code also grants permission to use an illustration.
Who should consider it
ChibiRigKit may suit someone who already has a character illustration and wants to explore a browser-playable 2D rig, especially if local OBS integration or built-in tracking and recording functions matter. It is a less direct fit if the requirement is a full 3D model, a guaranteed hands-off conversion, or a workflow with independently verified results: the project is beta and the cited feature descriptions come from its maker and repository documentation.
