Cheese Paper is a free desktop writing app for fiction and other long-form prose. It organizes a project around scenes, keeps scene notes and reference records close to the draft, and stores writing in ordinary Markdown files with TOML metadata. That makes it worth considering if you want a guided fiction workflow without locking your text inside a proprietary project format.
How does Cheese Paper organize a writing project?
A Cheese Paper project is made up of files rather than a single opaque document. Its central unit is the scene: each scene has prose plus its own notes and summary. Writers can also create separate character and worldbuilding records for people, places, organizations, or setting details.

The editor keeps scene notes visible alongside the prose while drafting. This structure can help writers who think in scenes and want story references within reach, although it is less feature-heavy than some dedicated writing environments.

Yes. Scene text is Markdown, and summaries and notes are stored in TOML headers. The developer says files can be created, edited, moved, or deleted outside Cheese Paper; files without metadata can still be read and processed. Changes made in an external editor, file manager, or sync program are detected while the app is open. The project’s plain-file approach is also described in the Flathub listing.

This portability is useful for inspection, backup, or editing with another tool. It also means external changes and synchronization tools can affect the same project files, so writers should choose a backup and file-management routine they trust.
Does Cheese Paper sync between computers?
Cheese Paper stores project files locally; it does not provide its own cloud-sync service. To work across computers, a user can arrange synchronization separately. The developer names Syncthing, Nextcloud, Google Drive, and Dropbox as examples, but does not prescribe a particular service or establish that a paid tier is required.

The app’s offline description has a specific exception: if update checking is enabled, Cheese Paper requests the latest version from Codeberg at startup. The developer says disabling update checking stops that request. It also states that the app has no telemetry and does not collect users’ writing. The official Cheese Paper site describes this behavior and says project files do not have to leave the computer except when a user chooses to back them up or sync them.
How do you export a project to EPUB or DOCX?
Cheese Paper exports Markdown, not finished EPUB or DOCX files natively. It offers two useful outputs:

For publishing formats, the developer suggests converting the Markdown output with Pandoc. EPUB, DOCX, HTML, and PDF are downstream conversion targets, so the final formatting depends on that conversion workflow rather than a native Cheese Paper export.
What are the trade-offs compared with other writing apps?
The developer names Manuskript and Scrivener as similar in concept, and Obsidian as another common point of comparison. Its view is that Cheese Paper has a simpler file format and better sync support than Manuskript and Scrivener, but fewer features and a stronger focus on the main writing flow. It characterizes Obsidian as useful for note-taking but less suited to story drafting. These are the developer’s opinions, not independent comparative test results. When assessing alternatives, compare the things that shape your own workflow:
- How scenes or chapters are organized and reordered.
- Whether notes and reference material remain accessible beside the draft.
- Whether project files remain readable and editable in ordinary tools.
- How synchronization and backups work.
- Which export and publishing formats are supported directly.
- Whether you prefer a focused feature set or broader capabilities, and what cost and platform support you need.
The developer describes Scrivener as paid and closed-source; current prices and detailed platform feature parity are not established here. Choose based on the workflow you need rather than assuming the apps offer equivalent features.

Where can you get Cheese Paper, and what should you expect?
The official site directs users to Codeberg for the latest release and generally recommends the Windows and macOS installers. Portable builds are available, but the developer warns they lack default spellcheck and start-menu or dock icons. Windows may show a security warning because the project’s certificates are expensive for a small developer.
Cheese Paper is also distributed through Flathub, whose listing describes a free desktop app for x86_64 and aarch64. The listing shows version 1.0.0 and notes changes including moving files to the system trash, new file-creation menu entries, interface improvements, and Flatpak-specific fixes. Releases and listing details can change, so check the current download source before installing.
Who is Cheese Paper for?
It is a reasonable candidate for fiction writers who work scene by scene, want notes and setting references near the manuscript, and value files that remain accessible outside the application. It is less compelling if you need an all-in-one suite with a wide range of built-in features or expect synchronization and finished publishing formats to be handled entirely within the editor.
