To check whether Windows has an update waiting, open Settings > Windows Update. The phrase “We’ve got an update for you” has appeared in a Windows 11 user report, but wording alone cannot confirm that a particular pop-up is genuine. If your main concern is an inconvenient restart, adjust Active hours; that changes restart timing, not necessarily whether update notifications appear.
Can you trust the pop-up?
Not from its wording alone. A Windows 11 user reported a prompt with “Restart now,” “Another time” and “OK” buttons, along with text saying Windows would restart and install an update at a specified time. A Microsoft Independent Advisor replying to that report said it sounded like an official notification and was usually associated with a feature update waiting to install. That is community advice, not confirmation from Microsoft that every prompt using similar wording is legitimate. Read the Microsoft Q&A report.

Verify the update through Settings rather than relying on the message. If Windows Update does not list a corresponding update, the reviewed information does not establish why that specific prompt appeared. Capture a screenshot and note your Windows version and build, then consult Microsoft’s Windows update guidance or seek help through Microsoft support.

- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Check whether Windows lists an update. To check for available updates, select Check for updates.
- If Windows offers an update, follow the on-screen instructions. Microsoft’s support guidance says to choose Download & install when offered and restart if prompted.
This is the supported way to see what Windows is offering. Microsoft’s instructions cover both Windows 11 and Windows 10, but support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; the update experience and available support can differ by version and device. Microsoft: Install Windows updates.

Prevent updates from restarting your PC at a bad time
If the interruption you want to avoid is an automatic restart, set your expected usage period as Active hours. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours, then choose the available option to set them automatically or adjust them manually. Microsoft says automatic restarts after an update occur outside active hours. This is a restart-scheduling control; it does not promise to hide every update message. Microsoft Learn: Manage device restarts after updates.
Can you permanently turn off this exact notification?
The available Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal, permanent way to suppress this exact message across every Windows 11 build and configuration. Microsoft Learn documents notification policies for managed devices, including options to turn off most or all update notifications, but those policies are intended for administrator-managed environments. They also do not control when updates download or install. Some restart-notification policies on that page are marked legacy and do not apply to Windows 11, so they are not a general fix for a home PC. See Microsoft Learn’s policy details and applicability notes.

A January 2026 Microsoft Q&A reply described a pause selector offering one to five weeks in that user’s configuration. That report does not guarantee the same choices on another device, build or edition, and pausing updates delays them rather than simply hiding a notification. Check the options shown on your own Windows Update page instead of assuming a fixed pause duration. See the configuration-specific Q&A discussion.
Choose the control that matches the interruption
| What you want to change | Relevant control | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Confirm an update is actually offered | Settings > Windows Update | Shows updates Windows offers and provides the supported installation route; it does not authenticate a pop-up by its wording alone. |
| Avoid an automatic restart during expected use | Active hours | Schedules automatic restarts outside the hours you set; it does not guarantee notification suppression. |
| Reduce update notifications on an administered device | Windows Update notification policies | Some policies can suppress most or all notifications, subject to device management, policy and Windows-version scope. They do not control update download or installation timing. |
| Delay updates temporarily | Pause updates, if the option is available in your configuration | Delays updates for the period Windows offers; reported pause choices are configuration-specific, not a guaranteed universal range. |
If the pop-up keeps returning
- Check Windows Update to see whether an update is still listed, and follow the status shown there.
- Use Active hours if the problem is an automatic restart during your usual working time.
- If Windows Update shows no corresponding update, save a screenshot and record your Windows version and build before asking Microsoft for help. The wording alone is not enough to identify the cause.
Recent user discussions describe similar prompts as intrusive, but their proposed fixes are anecdotal and do not establish a universal solution. See the ElevenForum discussion.
