Use a full-string check to verify that an input has the expected six-digit Indian PIN format. That only validates its shape: to confirm a PIN is assigned to a post office, check current India Post directory data; to assess a particular delivery service, check the office’s current service details as well.
Check the six-digit format in Python
Treat a PIN as text, not a number. It is an identifier, not a quantity, and keeping it as a string lets you validate the exact input without numeric conversion. India Post describes a PIN as a six-digit postal code. The first digit indicates a region; the first two indicate a sub-region or postal circle; the first three indicate a sorting or revenue district; and the last three identify the delivery post office. The Department of Posts’ description, reported by the Press Information Bureau on 26 September 2013, establishes the six-digit structure.

import re
def has_indian_pincode_format(value: object) -> bool:
# This checks shape only. It does not confirm an assigned post office.
return isinstance(value, str) and re.fullmatch(r"[1-9][0-9]{5}", value) is not None
This function returns True only when value is a string made of exactly six ASCII digits, with a first digit from 1 through 9. re.fullmatch requires the entire string to match, so extra characters, punctuation and whitespace are rejected. The expression is an implementation of the chosen format rule, not an official assignment check.
Decide how to handle surrounding spaces
As written, the function rejects values such as " 110001 ". If your input contract allows accidental spaces, strip them deliberately before checking:

def has_indian_pincode_format_allowing_outer_spaces(value: object) -> bool:
return (
isinstance(value, str)
and re.fullmatch(r"[1-9][0-9]{5}", value.strip()) is not None
)
This accepts only leading and trailing whitespace for string inputs. It does not make punctuation or separators acceptable. Normalize only what your application explicitly intends to accept; avoid silently changing other input.
Know what each level of validation proves
“Valid” can mean several different things. Choose the check that matches what your application promises to users.
Rank #2
| Check | What it establishes | How to do it |
|---|---|---|
| Input shape | The complete input follows your six-digit syntax rule. | Use the Python string check and re.fullmatch above. |
| Directory membership | The PIN appears in a post-office record in the directory data you checked. | Use India Post’s locator or official directory data. |
| Serviceability | The relevant office’s current record indicates whether it provides the service your application needs. | Inspect current office and service details; a format match or directory listing alone is not a delivery guarantee. |
A format check is quick and works offline, but it cannot tell whether a code is assigned, current or usable for a particular service. Directory membership gives stronger evidence of an assignment. Serviceability requires checking the relevant, current office record against the specific service required.

For an individual lookup
Use the India Post PIN-code locator when you need to look up a post-office record. Check the returned office and service details against your use case rather than treating a six-digit match as confirmation.
For an application or batch check
The Government of India’s All India Pincode Directory catalog describes a directory with fields including office name, PIN, office type, delivery status, district and state, and notes monthly updates. If you use a downloaded or otherwise stored snapshot, record when you obtained it and define how your application handles later updates. Directory data is time-sensitive; a match in an older snapshot does not by itself establish current serviceability.
When checking serviceability, use the official record fields relevant to the requested service. For example, the presence of a PIN in a directory does not alone show that the corresponding office offers every delivery option your application might promise.
Keep PIN codes distinct from DIGIPIN
DIGIPIN is a separate system, not another spelling or format for a postal PIN. The Department of Posts’ DIGIPIN technical document describes a 10-symbol alphanumeric grid code. A six-digit PIN regular expression will reject a DIGIPIN, as it should; use the rules and data for the identifier your application actually collects.

Do not treat a PIN as a precise address
A PIN identifies a postal delivery post office and its routing area; it is not a unique street address or a precise map point. In a 2025 paper, the Department of Posts estimated that the area covered by a PIN varies from a few square kilometres to thousands, averaging around 170 square kilometres. That Department paper explains the geographic variation. Ask for a street address or more precise location separately when your task requires one.
