To check a drive’s file system in Windows 11 without formatting it, open File Explorer, select This PC, right-click the drive, choose Properties, and read the File system value on the General tab. For command-line checks, use PowerShell’s Get-Volume or Command Prompt’s fsutil.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| File Explorer Properties | Quickly checking one drive | The File system field on the General tab |
| PowerShell with a drive-letter filter | Checking a known drive from the command line | The FileSystem value in the result |
| PowerShell without a filter | Reviewing volumes returned on the system | The FileSystem column |
fsutil |
Getting volume details for a known drive | The file-system name in the output |
| Disk Management | Viewing drives and volumes in a management interface | Use Properties or a command if the format is not apparent |
| Settings | Opening a volume’s properties through Windows Settings | Use Properties or a command if you need an explicit file-system label |
1. Check File Explorer Properties
This is the simplest option and Microsoft’s documented method for checking a drive’s file system.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC in the navigation pane.
- Right-click the drive you want to inspect and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, read the value beside File system.
The value identifies the selected drive’s file system, such as NTFS or exFAT. This is a read-only check; do not select Format to find the file system. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance and its external-drive instructions describe checking Properties.

Use Get-Volume with a drive-letter filter when you know the letter assigned to the volume.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Open PowerShell.
- Run
Get-Volume -DriveLetter E, replacingEwith the drive letter you want to inspect. - Read the
FileSystemvalue in the returned volume information.
For example, if the target drive is F:, use Get-Volume -DriveLetter F. Microsoft documents the cmdlet and filtered output in its Get-Volume reference.
3. List volumes with PowerShell
To review volume information without specifying one drive letter, run Get-Volume by itself in PowerShell. Find the relevant volume in the results and read its FileSystem column. This uses the same cmdlet as the filtered method; it simply returns volume objects without the drive-letter filter. Microsoft’s Get-Volume documentation describes both uses.

4. Use fsutil in Command Prompt or Windows Terminal
Microsoft documents fsutil fsinfo volumeinfo as a way to display volume information that includes the file-system name, and lists Windows 11 as supported.
- Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Run
fsutil fsinfo volumeinfo E:, replacingE:with the target drive. - Find the file-system name in the output.
Keep the colon after the drive letter. See Microsoft’s fsutil fsinfo reference for command details.

5. Inspect the drive in Disk Management
Disk Management is Windows’ built-in interface for viewing and managing disks and volumes. Open it using one of these routes:
- Right-click Start and choose Disk Management.
- Search Start for Create and format hard disk partitions.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
Select the volume you want to inspect. If its file-system value is not clear in the view, use the File Explorer Properties steps or one of the commands above for an explicit label. Microsoft explains how to open the tool in Disk Management in Windows.

6. Open volume properties in Settings
Windows Settings provides a path to volume properties for a volume with a drive letter:

- Go to System > Storage > Disks & volumes.
- Open the target volume’s properties.
Windows builds may present this area differently, and Microsoft’s cited Settings instructions do not explicitly identify a file-system field there. If you need an unambiguous file-system name, check File Explorer Properties or use Get-Volume or fsutil. See Microsoft’s Storage settings instructions.

What does the file-system name mean?
You may see names such as NTFS, FAT, or exFAT. Microsoft gives NTFS as an example for computer disks and external hard drives, and FAT or exFAT for examples such as SD cards and USB flash drives. Those examples are not a dependable way to identify an individual drive: check the specific volume instead. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance includes these examples.
Check the format without changing it
All six methods above are for viewing drive or volume information. Reading Properties or command output does not format a drive. Formatting is a separate action; do not choose a Format command when you only want to identify the current file system.
