An hourly server that shuts down while nobody is playing can cost only a few euros for occasional sessions, while a monthly plan is easier for a world that should remain available every day. Choose by expected hours, RAM needs, Build 41 or Build 42 compatibility, player location, mod load, and save-management features—not by the lowest headline price alone.

What “cheap but still good” means for a Project Zomboid server
A low price is useful only if the server has enough memory for your players and mods, supports the game build your group uses, keeps the save safe, and places the machine close enough to players for acceptable latency. A four-player vanilla world has very different requirements from a heavily modded 20-player world.

#1 Best Overall
Best fit by playing pattern
| Situation | Usually the better value | Why | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional sessions, such as weekends | Hourly hosting with automatic shutdown | You pay for started hours while the server is running, rather than every calendar day. | Confirm the hourly tier, startup behavior, minimum billing unit, and whether backups persist while the server is off. |
| A world that friends can join at any time | Monthly hosting | A fixed recurring price is simpler than starting and stopping sessions. | Check the plan’s player cap, RAM, region, taxes, renewal price, and cancellation terms. |
| Heavy mods or a larger group | A higher-RAM plan or self-hosting | Extra memory gives more room for mod assets and simultaneous players. | RAM guidance is only a planning estimate; CPU performance, storage, and configuration still matter. |
| Technically confident owner with suitable hardware | Self-hosting | You avoid rental fees and control the software and files. | You manage installation, updates, port forwarding, backups, security, power, and uptime. |
TickServ: the low-cost hourly option
TickServ describes its Project Zomboid service as a dedicated server billed by started hour, with no subscription. Its page, accessed October 13, 2026, says a server costs €0 while it is off and advertises automatic shutdown when nobody is playing. Prices include VAT according to the provider.
There is a presentation detail worth checking: the page headline says “from €0.03/h,” but the detailed live table includes 4 GB Eco entries at €0.02 per hour. Treat the table and the configuration shown at checkout as authoritative for the exact machine you select.
| TickServ configuration shown | RAM | CPU type | Advertised price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eco tier | 4 GB | Shared vCPU | €0.02/hour |
| Eco tier | 8 GB | Shared vCPU | €0.03/hour for listed entries |
| Eco tier | 16 GB | Shared vCPU | €0.06/hour |
| Eco tier | 32 GB | Shared vCPU | €0.10/hour |
| Dedicated CPU | 8 GB | Dedicated CPU | €0.10/hour |
| Dedicated CPU | 32 GB | Dedicated CPU | €0.26/hour |
The table does not state every intermediate dedicated-CPU price, so do not infer one for a 16 GB configuration. If four friends run a small, lightly modded world for 100 billed hours in a month, the 4 GB Eco rate would be €2 before any configuration change; that arithmetic is an illustration, not a promise that 4 GB will perform well for your world.
TickServ features relevant to a budget group
- The service advertises Build 42 support.
- Workshop mods can be added by entering their Workshop IDs.
- A built-in admin console is available.
- Saves are archived before shutdown and restored at the next session, according to the provider.
- Eco locations are listed in Germany, France, Finland, the Netherlands, and Romania.
- Dedicated-CPU locations are listed in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, North America East, Poland, and Italy.
Location availability depends on capacity. Select the region that minimizes distance for most players, then check whether the chosen RAM and CPU combination is available there.
BESTNET-GSERVER: predictable monthly tiers
BESTNET LLC’s October 9, 2026 release lists monthly billing only, with no setup fee, minimum term, or cancellation fee. The dollar figures are reference amounts and may change with exchange rates, so verify the checkout total, taxes, region, and plan details before paying.
| Plan | Reference monthly price (October 2026) | Maximum listed players | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | US$6.57 | 4 | A small group within the stated cap |
| Medium | US$11.26 | 8 | A larger group or additional headroom |
| Large | US$19.97 | 16 | Groups approaching the listed maximum |
The player limits are maximums stated by the provider, not a guarantee of comfortable play with a particular mod collection. Ask or check the panel for the RAM assigned to each plan, CPU details, storage, backup policy, and available regions before treating the price as comparable with an hourly tier.
Build 41 and Build 42 compatibility
BESTNET says Build 42 is the default and Build 41 can be selected in the control panel. It also warns that a Build 42 world cannot be opened in Build 41. Returning to Build 41 requires starting a new world, selecting the corresponding version, and ensuring every player runs that same version. TickServ advertises Build 42, so confirm its current Build 41 availability if your existing save still uses that build.
Version matching applies to the server and every client. Before migration, make a separate copy of the save and decide whether preserving the world is more important than moving to a newer build.
How much RAM does your group need?
TickServ’s September 2026 survey-based guidance is explicitly a ballpark estimate, not an independent performance guarantee.

| Group and workload | TickServ starting estimate |
|---|---|
| Up to 6 players, no mods | 8 GB |
| Up to 32 players, no mods | 16 GB |
| Up to 32 players, a few mods | 16 GB |
| Up to 6 players, heavy mods | 16 GB |
| Up to 32 players, heavy mods | 32 GB |
Its FAQ summarizes 8 GB for a small two-to-six-player group and 16 GB for larger groups or many mods. Start with the estimate that matches both your player count and mod load, then leave room for growth. A provider’s advertised player cap does not prove that the server will remain smooth at that cap.
Signs that the initial size is too small
- Players report delayed actions or recurring server pauses as the world becomes busier.
- Performance deteriorates after adding a large Workshop collection.
- Scheduled backups, map exploration, or zombie-population changes coincide with stalls.
- The host dashboard shows memory pressure or swapping.
These symptoms can also come from CPU contention, network distance, a faulty mod, or an overloaded host node. Increase RAM only after checking logs and removing incompatible mods; more memory cannot fix every cause of lag.

Compare the details that the headline price hides
Billing and shutdown behavior
For hourly hosting, estimate your own billed hours: sessions per week multiplied by hours per session, plus time spent testing, updating, and administering. TickServ says billing is by started hour, so a session that crosses into another hour can create another charge. Automatic shutdown can reduce idle cost, but confirm how quickly it triggers and whether an administrator can override it for maintenance.
Monthly hosting avoids session-by-session arithmetic. It can be cheaper for a world that stays online most of the month, but a low monthly price with insufficient RAM or a distant region is false economy.
CPU, storage, and save persistence
Project Zomboid simulation work is not determined by RAM alone. Compare shared versus dedicated CPU options, storage type and capacity, save-retention rules, and whether backups can be downloaded. TickServ advertises save archiving before shutdown and restoration at the next session; confirm how many archives are retained and how to recover an older one.
Mods and administration
Workshop-ID entry is convenient for a small group, but verify whether the panel handles mod updates, load order, server-side-only mods, and removal of a broken item. An admin console helps with moderation and scheduled commands. Keep a written list of Workshop IDs and the load order so you can rebuild the server after a reset.
Region and network path
Choose a location close to the majority of players rather than the cheapest location globally. If players are split across continents, test the region during the hours you normally play. Provider location lists describe advertised availability, not measured latency from your home connection.
Build a shortlist in this order
- Record the group profile. Write down the usual and peak player counts, vanilla or modded status, current Build 41 or Build 42 world, and expected sessions per month.
- Set a RAM floor. Use the ballpark table as a starting point, then add headroom for planned mods. Do not choose a plan solely because its player cap matches your headcount.
- Calculate usage. For hourly hosting, estimate started hours and include maintenance sessions. For monthly hosting, include recurring charges and currency conversion.
- Verify the game build. Confirm the host can run your build and that an existing save can be opened there. Make a backup before changing builds.
- Check the region. Pick the closest practical location and confirm that the required RAM and CPU tier is available in that location.
- Inspect operations. Confirm Workshop handling, admin access, automatic shutdown, save archives, backup downloads, restart controls, and support channels.
- Read the checkout summary. Recheck VAT or taxes, currency, renewal terms, billing unit, setup charges, cancellation rules, and any extra IP, storage, or CPU cost.
- Run a controlled first session. Start with the intended mods, invite the full group, monitor logs and memory, and keep the original local save until the hosted world has been verified.
Self-hosting: the lowest rental cost, with the most responsibility
Self-hosting can be sensible if one player already has a computer that can remain powered on and a reliable internet connection. ForgeWorld documents installation through Steam tools or SteamCMD and notes that configuration tasks are required. You must manage ports, updates, firewall rules, server settings, saves, backups, and recovery yourself.
TechRadar gives a rough secondary baseline of a quad-core 2.5 GHz CPU, 8 GB RAM, and a 20 GB SSD for a server. Those figures are editorial guidance, not developer-certified Project Zomboid server minimums. Mod count, world activity, operating-system overhead, and other services running on the machine can require more.

A responsible self-hosting checklist
- Install the dedicated server with Steam tools or SteamCMD, then apply the game build required by every player.
- Set a fixed local address and forward the required game port on the router, if your network permits it.
- Allow the server through the operating system firewall while blocking unnecessary inbound services.
- Configure the server name, password, player limit, admin account, world settings, and Workshop collection.
- Schedule save backups to a separate disk or machine and test restoring one before inviting players.
- Document update and rollback steps so a broken mod or build change does not destroy the only copy of the world.
Self-hosting is not automatically cheaper once you account for electricity, hardware wear, upload bandwidth, troubleshooting time, and downtime. It is best for an owner who values control and is comfortable being the support person for the group.

Common mistakes and fixes
Choosing by player cap
Problem: The plan advertises enough slots, but the world lags with your mods. Fix: Size by RAM, CPU, mod load, and observed behavior; treat the cap as an upper limit, not a performance promise.
Mixing Build 41 and Build 42
Problem: Players cannot join, or a Build 42 save will not open after switching back. Fix: Set the same build in the host panel and every Steam client, and preserve a backup before migration. A Build 42 world cannot be opened in Build 41 according to BESTNET’s release.
Ignoring started-hour billing
Problem: Several short sessions cost more than expected. Fix: Count every started billing hour, including testing and administration, and verify the host’s shutdown timing.
Installing mods without a rollback plan
Problem: A Workshop update causes errors or corrupts the load order. Fix: Keep a list of IDs and versions, back up before changes, add mods in small batches, and remove the last change first when troubleshooting.
Assuming advertised locations guarantee low latency
Problem: The selected region is technically nearby but performs poorly on your network path. Fix: Test during normal play hours and move regions if the provider allows it.
A practical verdict
Godlike.Host is listed first here: its Project Zomboid hosting provides a Pterodactyl-based game panel, a built-in mod installer and updater, SFTP/FTP access, and up to three free backups a day with restore; see Godlike.Host for current plans.
For a two-to-six-player group that plays intermittently, TickServ’s billed-by-started-hour model and automatic shutdown are the clearest low-cost fit, provided the selected RAM tier is adequate. Its detailed table shows €0.02/hour 4 GB Eco entries and €0.03/hour listed 8 GB Eco entries, despite the €0.03/hour headline; verify the live configuration before ordering.
For an always-available world, BESTNET-GSERVER’s October 2026 monthly references of US$6.57, US$11.26, and US$19.97 offer predictable billing, but exchange rates, plan resources, region, and the 4-, 8-, and 16-player caps require confirmation at checkout. Whichever model you choose, matching the game build, allocating enough RAM for mods, protecting saves, and selecting a nearby region matter more than saving a small amount on the headline rate.
