These are provider-listed figures checked in October 2026, not independently audited checkout totals. The 90-day Nitrado figure should not be presented as a direct one-month comparison with the 30-day prices. The pound prices also cannot establish that the VPS is cheaper than a dollar-priced managed plan without an exchange-rate and tax calculation.
Map choice can change the cheapest answer
When the 20-slot tier is enough
If your group is playing a map covered by Nitrado’s entry tier and has no need for more than 20 simultaneous slots, the smaller plan meets the stated capacity requirement. Remember that a slot limit is a maximum configuration, not a promise that every combination of mods, structures, creatures and player activity will run smoothly.
When Astraeos or Lost Colony makes the larger tier mandatory
Nitrado’s FAQ says: “Only Astraeos and Lost Colony require a minimum of 26 slots to provide enough headroom for those demands plus the usual server overhead, mods, and full player counts.” That rule applies to services purchased after June 22, 2026, at 2 PM CEST. A group choosing either map should price the 26-slot all-map tier rather than treating the cheaper 20-slot offer as an option.

Why the slot number is not a performance guarantee
The providers do not publish an independent test showing how many heavily modded players a given plan can sustain. The slot count describes the configured player ceiling. Mod load, save size, creature density, automation, map choice and activity peaks can all affect server behavior, so leave practical headroom instead of planning to fill every slot continuously.
Platforms, crossplay and mods
Nitrado lists crossplay for PC, Xbox and PlayStation and integrated CurseForge mod management, including crossplay mods. - Write down the exact clients your players use before ordering.
- Confirm that each required mod supports the intended crossplay arrangement.

- Test one client from each platform before inviting the full group.
A VPS gives you more freedom to choose files and settings, but it also makes you responsible for compatibility checks, version changes and recovery when a mod update conflicts with the server.

Buying and configuring a managed server

- Run a compatibility test. Join from every platform represented in the group, load the required mods and check that characters, structures and saves behave as expected before the scheduled play session.
- Observe the first busy session. Watch restart behavior, save times and connection quality. If the server struggles, reduce mod or world load, move to a larger plan or reassess the location rather than assuming the slot cap guarantees performance.
Setting up the self-managed VPS route
- Choose the region and capacity. Select a VPS location near the majority of players. Use a larger infrastructure category instead if you already know you need several maps, heavy mods or public-server scale.
- Connect to Windows Server. Use the supplied Remote Desktop access and immediately secure administrator credentials and remote-access rules.

- Configure network access. Apply the firewall and port requirements specified by the current ARK: Survival Ascended documentation and your client mix. Test from outside the server machine, not only through localhost.
- Test updates and mods on a copy. Apply game and mod updates during a maintenance window, retain a backup of the save and verify that the server starts cleanly before replacing the live instance.
- Plan operations. Schedule restarts, monitor storage, protect the save directory and decide who responds when the process stops or a mod breaks after an update.
The VPS can be a strong value for someone who already performs these tasks. For a player who wants to start a world immediately, the administration burden can outweigh any infrastructure advantage.
Location and latency: how to avoid a bad bargain
Choose the data center based on where the players actually live, not solely on the advertised price. Nitrado shows location selections and provider-reported ping values. The VPS listing shows London, Frankfurt and New York and suggests using its ping test. Neither listing is an independent, apples-to-apples latency benchmark.

What “still good” should mean in 2026
A cheap ARK server is still good when it meets the group’s map and platform requirements, leaves enough capacity for the actual workload, sits near the players and can be recovered by someone in the group.
