Cheap x86 mini PCs have made the Raspberry Pi a less automatic choice for desktop use and many home-server projects—but they have not made it obsolete. A mini PC often comes ready with memory, storage, a case and power supply, while a Pi remains compelling for GPIO projects, compact embedded builds, PoE deployments and power-constrained setups. The right comparison is between complete systems built for the same job, not a bare board and a finished computer.
Are cheap mini PCs replacing Raspberry Pis?
There is no cited market-wide adoption statistic showing that mini PCs are displacing Raspberry Pis. What the evidence does show is a shift in the value calculation: a complete mini PC can offer more ready-to-use computing capability for the money than a Pi build once you add the parts your project needs.

That matters most if you want a general-purpose desktop, run several self-hosted services, or need software that works best on x86. It matters less if your project depends on the Pi’s GPIO header, small board format, or low-power deployment options. The Pi is no longer the default answer for every small-computing job; it remains a distinct tool for jobs that suit it.

A Raspberry Pi board and a mini PC may arrive in very different states. A board-only Pi price excludes items such as a power supply, case, cooling and storage. Many mini PCs include memory, an SSD, power supply and enclosure, but the exact specification depends on the model and SKU. Confirm what is actually in the box before comparing totals.

For example, Tom’s Hardware reported that in January 2026 Jeff Geerling’s Raspberry Pi 5 16GB bundle—configured with a 512GB SSD, 27W power supply, bumper case and RTC battery—cost $246.95, while a GMKtec NucBox G3 Plus example was $246.99. Those were dated listing examples, not current quotes or proof of lasting price parity. The same article reported a Beelink S13 at $259 in January 2026, compared with an earlier August 2025 listing at $159; its Acemagic Vista V1 example was $217.54, compared with $158 in August 2025. It also reported a $199 Geekom Air12 Lite N100 configuration with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD in January 2026. These examples illustrate how prices can move, not what every model costs today. Tom’s Hardware’s January 2026 comparison provides the dated configurations and context.
A separate illustrative calculation by selfhosting.sh, accessed in October 2026, priced a Pi 5 8GB build with an official power supply, NVMe HAT, 256GB SSD, case and active cooler at about $147, versus about $155 for an N100 mini PC with 16GB RAM, a 500GB SSD, power supply and case. Its modeled three-year totals were $163 and $180, respectively, using an assumed electricity rate of $0.12/kWh. Those are the publisher’s assumptions and example builds, not universal market prices or an independent guarantee of future costs. The full self-hosting comparison explains its configuration and cost model.
How the two options differ by use
| What matters | Cheap x86 mini PC | Raspberry Pi |
|---|---|---|
| Software | Often a better fit for standard x86 Windows or Linux applications, and for software or container images without a suitable ARM build. Check support for the particular application or image. | A natural fit for Pi-targeted instructions, GPIO integrations and projects built around the Pi ecosystem. |
| Compute and memory | Can suit desktop work, multiple services, heavier self-hosting and some virtual-machine use. Capability varies by processor, memory and cooling. | Can handle lighter server duties and embedded tasks that fit the board’s resources. |
| Storage | Many models include an SSD; internal expansion varies. Verify the exact SKU. | Many builds use microSD. NVMe requires compatible add-on hardware and adds to the build. |
| Hardware access | Offers standard PC ports and model-dependent expansion, but the compared mini PCs do not have a native Pi-style GPIO header. | Provides GPIO and a board format designed for sensors, electronics and custom hardware. |
| Power and deployment | Convenient where a ready-made PC and wall power suit the installation. Measure the specific unit if it will run continuously. | Can be advantageous for compact, PoE, battery, solar or remote deployments. Actual draw depends on workload and attached hardware. |
| Total cost | Compare the complete system, warranty and workload. Refurbished systems are a separate comparison. | The board may be an inexpensive starting point, but include only the power, case, cooling, storage and add-ons the project requires. |
Which should you choose for a desktop or home server?
Choose a mini PC when you need a small general-purpose computer
A mini PC is usually the more straightforward option if you want a ready-to-use desktop, need x86 compatibility, or plan to run several services that benefit from more memory or storage. It can also reduce assembly work because many systems include the basics. “Mini PC” is a broad category, though: processors, RAM, storage, cooling, ports and upgrade options differ substantially. Check the exact configuration rather than assuming every inexpensive model offers the same capability. TechRadar’s 2026 mini-PC guide illustrates the range of specifications on the market.

Choose a Pi when the project is built around the board
The Pi is a strong fit for electronics projects that use GPIO, compact embedded deployments, and builds that rely on Pi-specific documentation or accessories. Its size and options such as PoE can also matter when a full PC is unnecessary or awkward to power. For lighter server tasks, a Pi may be entirely adequate; the useful question is whether the software, performance and storage meet the needs of your particular workload.

Check architecture before choosing for software
x86 compatibility can make a mini PC easier to use with standard desktop applications and software distributed only for x86. That does not mean all ARM software is unavailable or that every Docker image works on every machine. Check the architecture and support requirements for the applications, images and services you actually plan to run.
What do performance and electricity tests establish?
Jeff Geerling’s comparison reports that the DDR4 N100 mini-PC configurations he tested outperformed the Pi 5 in raw performance; his NucBox G3 scored between 1.5 and 2 times as fast depending on the benchmark. He also notes that thermals and power limits affect results, and reports lower work-per-watt efficiency for the tested N150 than for the Pi 5. These results describe one reviewer’s systems and benchmark suite, not every N100 machine or workload. Geerling’s comparison includes the test context and caveats.
For an always-on server, processor TDP and the wattage printed on a power adapter are not substitutes for measuring the whole system’s energy use. Typical or idle draw, attached devices, workload and local electricity rates all affect the bill. If the machine will run on a battery, solar supply or remote PoE connection, power use can be a more important constraint than a modest difference in a modeled household electricity bill.
How Raspberry Pi pricing has changed
On February 2, 2026, Raspberry Pi announced temporary memory-related price increases for Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 5, Compute Module 4 and Compute Module 5 products with at least 2GB of memory. The announcement listed increases of $10 for 2GB, $15 for 4GB, $30 for 8GB and $60 for 16GB; it said 1GB products were protected at that time. It also identified the Pi 400 as a $60 all-in-one PC. Eben Upton wrote, “Price rises have accelerated as we enter 2026, and the cost of some parts has more than doubled over the last quarter.” These were official statements dated February 2026, not a guarantee of current local retail prices. Other options if neither one fits
Refurbished business micro PCs
Used Tiny, Mini and Micro business desktops can offer expansion and x86 compatibility at a different price point. Their age, condition, warranty, seller reliability and power draw vary, so assess those separately from new mini PCs and new Pi builds.
Other single-board computers
Boards such as Radxa ROCK 5C, Orange Pi, Banana Pi, Odroid and Libre Computer may suit projects that need a single-board format but not specifically a Raspberry Pi. Their hardware and software support are model-dependent. RaspberryTips’ September 2026 guide notes that official OS support for the ROCK 5C is more limited and that some users may rely on community images; verify the exact board revision and operating-system support before purchase. See the alternatives guide.
