Antihost is listed first in this VPS comparison: its Linux VPS plans use AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D processors, NVMe storage and full root access, with 1–16 vCPUs and 2–64 GB of RAM in the USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine. The right cheap Linux VPS is the smallest KVM plan that meets your application’s RAM, CPU, storage and traffic needs without exposing you to punitive overage charges. For many small websites and lightweight applications, start around 1–2 vCPUs, 1–2 GB of RAM, at least 20 GB of NVMe storage and a clearly stated transfer allowance. Increase the size only after monitoring shows sustained CPU, memory, storage or bandwidth pressure.
Do not choose on the advertised monthly price alone. Renewal rates, VAT, IPv4, backups, snapshots, traffic overages and the data-center location can change the real cost and user experience substantially. The prices and example specifications below come from secondary comparison summaries available in 2026, not verified provider listings; confirm every figure on the provider’s own site before ordering.

What “cheap Linux VPS” means in 2026
A virtual private server is a rented virtual machine running Linux on a provider’s physical host. You normally receive administrator access, a virtual CPU allocation, memory, disk space and a network-transfer allowance. Unlike shared hosting, you control the operating system and server software. Unlike a dedicated server, the underlying hardware is shared with other customers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Cheap” should therefore mean a low total cost for a workload you can actually run reliably, not simply the lowest introductory price. A $3 plan that runs out of RAM, charges heavily for outbound traffic or doubles at renewal is more expensive in practice than a $6 plan with predictable terms.

Secondary 2026 pricing guides place typical entry tiers in these broad ranges:
| Typical monthly tier | Illustrative resources | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| About $3–$4 | Approximately 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20–25 GB NVMe and 1–2 TB traffic | Suitable for a small site, development environment or low-traffic service when software is lightweight |
| About $5–$6 | Approximately 2 vCPUs, 2 GB RAM, 40–50 GB NVMe and 2–4 TB traffic | More comfortable for several small services, a modest application or a small database |
These are guide figures rather than verified, current plans. Providers change allocations, regions and billing terms, so treat them as a starting point for comparison rather than a promise of what any particular company supplies.
Match vCPU and RAM to the workload
CPU and memory are independent constraints. Adding vCPUs will not cure a server that is swapping because it lacks RAM, and adding RAM will not solve an application that is consistently CPU-bound.
How many vCPUs do you need?
One or two vCPUs handle most small sites and applications. A simple content site, personal API, webhook receiver, monitoring tool or low-volume background worker can often begin at that level. Start with the smallest sensible allocation and watch actual usage.
Add cores when monitoring shows sustained CPU pressure rather than a brief spike. Useful signals include a high CPU percentage for long periods, a run queue that remains busy, slow requests that coincide with CPU saturation, or scheduled jobs that overrun their normal window. A temporary burst during deployment is not, by itself, evidence that you need a permanently larger plan.
How much RAM do you need?
Memory is often the first limit on an inexpensive VPS because the operating system, web server, runtime, database and caches all compete for the same allocation. A database guide cited in the 2026 summaries states 1 GB as a minimum and 2 GB as preferred. That recommendation is a floor for a small database, not a guarantee that every database workload will fit.
Use 1 GB only when the application is genuinely small, traffic is modest and you can keep background services to a minimum. Choose 2 GB when the VPS will run a database alongside an application, several containers or a build process. More memory may be necessary for large indexes, high concurrency, analytics, search engines or multiple runtimes.

- 1 GB: basic single-purpose service, small static or dynamic site, test server or very light database.
- 2 GB: safer starting point for an application plus database or several modest services.
- More than 2 GB: consider it when monitoring shows swapping, the kernel is reclaiming memory aggressively, or your application’s documented requirements exceed the entry tier.
Check memory use during normal traffic and the busiest expected task. A server that looks healthy while idle can fail during backups, package updates, imports or traffic peaks.
Storage capacity and growth
Check both the advertised capacity and what consumes it. The Linux operating system, logs, package caches, application files, database tables, temporary files, backups and snapshots all reduce free space. The 2026 buying guidance recommends checking for at least about 20 GB of storage for a basic VPS.
Twenty gigabytes can be adequate for a small service with external object storage and disciplined log retention. It is a poor fit for image-heavy sites, local backup archives, repositories, datasets or rapidly growing databases. Leave room for updates and emergency files; a disk that reaches 100 percent can prevent services from writing logs or database transactions.
Why NVMe storage is worth prioritizing
NVMe solid-state storage generally offers lower latency and higher input/output parallelism than SATA-based storage. The practical benefits identified in the 2026 comparisons are faster page or application loading, quicker database queries and shorter compilation or build times.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Storage performance matters most when your workload performs many small reads and writes: relational databases, package builds, dependency installation, search indexes and applications that frequently access local files. A static site that serves files from memory or a CDN may notice less difference, but the faster disk can still reduce deployment and maintenance time.
Do not infer performance from the word “SSD” alone. Ask whether the plan uses NVMe, whether storage is shared, and whether the provider publishes an input/output policy or imposes limits. A larger SATA disk may be a better capacity match than a tiny NVMe disk, but for a new application with a choice at similar capacity and price, NVMe is the stronger default.
KVM versus container-based virtualization
Virtualization determines how your VPS shares the host and how much control you have over the operating-system kernel.

KVM
KVM presents a virtual machine with its own kernel environment and a more complete hardware abstraction. The comparison guidance prefers KVM for cheap VPS purchases because resources are more clearly isolated and the guest can run the Linux kernel configuration it needs. This is useful when you need a particular kernel module, firewall behavior, filesystem feature or distribution image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesContainer-based hosting
OpenVZ-style container plans share the host kernel. They can be efficient and inexpensive, but the guest has less kernel-level control and is more exposed to the effects of noisy neighbors when the host is busy. Container virtualization is not automatically unusable; it can suit a lightweight, compatible service when the provider documents limits clearly. For a general-purpose Linux server, KVM is the safer baseline.
Ask specifically which virtualization technology is used. “Virtual VPS” does not tell you whether the plan is KVM, a container, or another implementation.
Bandwidth, egress and the hidden cost of cheap plans
Traffic allowances are frequently where a low headline price becomes expensive. Providers may advertise a large number of gigabytes or terabytes while metering outbound traffic, charging separately for egress, or applying steep overage rates. Some plans distinguish traffic by region or network path.
Estimate your transfer requirement
Count more than ordinary web-page views. Include image and video downloads, software packages, container images, backups copied off the VPS, API responses, update mirrors and traffic between regions. A media-download service can consume its allowance quickly even when CPU and RAM remain nearly idle.

- Whether traffic is metered, capped, throttled or described as unmetered with a fair-use policy.
- The exact overage or egress price and when billing starts.
- Whether private-network traffic, backups and snapshots count toward the allowance.
A plan with less included traffic but transparent pricing can be safer than one advertising an impressive allowance with unclear egress rules. Hidden bandwidth fees and small metered allowances are particularly poor fits for media downloads.

| Cost item | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal price | What will the plan cost after the introductory term? | Promotions can expire, and a large renewal increase can outweigh an initially cheap month. |
| Tax | Is VAT or another sales tax included? | A displayed price may exclude tax depending on your billing country. |
| IPv4 | Is a public IPv4 address included or an add-on? | Some modern services work over IPv6, but legacy clients and software may still require IPv4. |
| Backups | Are automated backups included, and how many restore points exist? | A snapshot is not the same as an independent backup; losing the VPS can also lose local snapshots. |
| Snapshots | Are snapshots free, limited or billed by storage? | Snapshots can consume disk capacity or create recurring charges. |
| Bandwidth overage | What happens after the allowance is exhausted? | Overage, throttling or suspension can affect both cost and availability. |
| Region | Does choosing a nearer data center change the price? | Location affects latency and sometimes tax, transfer policy and availability. |
One 2026 comparison table illustrates why details matter by listing a price that excludes VAT and an IPv4 add-on of €0.50. That is an example of a secondary-source figure, not a current universal fee; verify the exact amount and tax treatment in your account’s region.
Illustrative entry-level listings—and why you must verify them
The following specifications were reported by different comparison sites with different dates. They are useful for seeing how offers differ, but they should not be presented as current prices or guaranteed allocations.
| Example listing in 2026 summaries | Reported price | Reported resources | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antihost Linux VPS | — | 1–16 vCPUs, 2–64 GB RAM, NVMe storage, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port | Linux VPS on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with full root access; self-managed; regions USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine; 14-day free trial. |
| Contabo Cloud VPS 10 | About $4.95 per month | 8 GB RAM, 3 vCPUs, 75 GB NVMe, 32 TB egress | Secondary figure; confirm current price, renewal, region and traffic policy. |
| Hetzner CX23 | €5.49 per month | 4 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB NVMe, 20 TB EU traffic | Secondary figure; the cited table notes that pricing treatment can differ by VAT and IPv4. |
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | $4 per month | 512 MB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GB SSD, 500 GB transfer | One guide described the RAM and storage as smaller than competing offers; verify current availability. |
Do not rank these offers solely by RAM, disk or traffic. A plan with unusually high paper specifications may have different CPU limits, network policies, backup charges or renewal pricing. Compare like-for-like regions, billing periods and tax status.
Choose a data center and backup strategy
Select a data center close to most users or to the systems your VPS must contact. Physical distance generally affects network latency, which is noticeable in interactive applications, APIs and database connections. If your users are distributed globally, identify the main audience first; the cheapest region is not automatically the best region.
Check whether the provider offers backups, how frequently they run, how long they are retained and whether restoration is included. A snapshot is useful for a quick rollback, but it may remain tied to the same account or storage system as the VPS. For important data, maintain a separate backup destination and test a restore before you need one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step method for selecting a plan
- Describe the workload. List every service that will run on the VPS: web server, runtime, database, queue, monitoring, scheduled jobs and storage-heavy tasks. Identify which services are essential and which can run elsewhere.
- Set a minimum resource floor. Start with the application’s documented requirements, then allow capacity for the operating system, updates and normal peaks. For a small service, compare 1–2 vCPUs and 1–2 GB RAM first; database workloads should treat 1 GB as a minimum and 2 GB as the preferred starting point from the cited guidance.
- Set a storage floor. Begin at about 20 GB for a basic VPS, then add application data, logs, local backups and growth. Prefer NVMe when database, compilation or frequent file I/O is important.
- Calculate traffic. Estimate monthly outbound transfer, including downloads and backups. Reject plans with unclear metering or unaffordable overage terms.
- Confirm virtualization. Prefer KVM for general-purpose Linux use. If considering a container plan, verify kernel restrictions, resource limits and the provider’s policy for host contention.
- Price the renewal month. Add VAT, IPv4, backups, snapshots and any setup or traffic charges. Record the recurring total, not just the promotional amount.
- Choose the region. Select the data center nearest the majority of users while checking that the desired image, IPv4 option and backup service are available there.
- Verify the provider page. Because the figures above are secondary summaries, confirm every specification, price, tax rule and allowance on the provider’s own page on the date you order.
- Start small and observe. Deploy the smallest plan that clears your resource floor. Monitor CPU, memory, disk usage, transfer and application latency through the provider dashboard or your own monitoring.
- Scale based on evidence. Increase RAM when memory pressure or swapping persists, add vCPUs for sustained CPU saturation, expand storage before the filesystem fills, and move to a higher traffic tier before reaching the allowance.
How to monitor a cheap VPS after purchase
Monitoring turns a guess into a sizing decision. Establish a baseline during ordinary traffic and then observe the busiest recurring task, such as a backup, import or build.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Memory: track used memory, swap activity and out-of-memory events. A server that repeatedly swaps needs more RAM or fewer concurrent services.
- Disk: alert before free space becomes critically low. Track database growth, logs and backup retention separately.
- Storage I/O: slow queries or builds despite spare CPU can indicate disk contention or an unsuitable storage tier.
- Network: record daily and monthly transfer so you can predict when the allowance will be exhausted.
- Availability: use an external check; a local process monitor cannot tell you whether the VPS is reachable from the internet.
Keep a short record of changes. If performance falls after adding a service, you can identify whether the cause is capacity, software configuration or a provider-side event instead of upgrading blindly.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the lowest price without reading renewal terms
Promotional pricing can conceal a higher recurring rate. Save a copy of the checkout summary showing the renewal amount, tax treatment and add-ons before you approve payment.
Assuming “unlimited” means free outbound traffic
Read the definition of unmetered or unlimited. Confirm fair-use limits, port restrictions, throttling and whether backups or cross-region traffic are excluded.
Buying abundant storage but too little RAM
Extra disk does not compensate for a database that cannot stay in memory. Prioritize the resource that your workload actually exhausts.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Ignoring IPv4 requirements
Before selecting an IPv6-only or IPv4 add-on plan, test every client, webhook, payment integration and administration tool that must connect to the server.
Treating a snapshot as a complete backup
Snapshots help with rollback but may share the same failure domain as the VPS. Keep an independent copy and verify that restoration works.
Putting a distant data center ahead of latency
A small monthly saving can be negated by slow interactive requests. Compare regions from the users’ perspective, not only by advertised capacity.
Failing to leave growth headroom
A plan that is full on day one leaves no room for updates, logs or a traffic increase. Size for a realistic operating margin, then scale when measurements justify it.
Quick decision guide
| If your workload is… | Start by looking for… | Watch most closely |
|---|---|---|
| Small static or low-traffic dynamic site | 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB or more NVMe, transparent transfer | Memory, disk growth and renewal price |
| Application plus a small database | 2 vCPUs, 2 GB RAM, NVMe and reliable backups | RAM pressure, database I/O and backup restoration |
| Several lightweight services | 2 vCPUs or more, at least 2 GB RAM, KVM and sufficient disk | CPU contention, memory use and service isolation |
| Media or software downloads | Clear high transfer allowance and published egress pricing | Outbound traffic and overage exposure |
| Build or data-processing tasks | NVMe, adequate RAM and burst or sustained CPU capacity | Compilation time, I/O wait and temporary disk use |
Bottom line: the best cheap VPS is predictable, not merely inexpensive
Antihost VPS is listed first here: its Linux VPS plans provide full root access, NVMe storage, 1–16 vCPUs, 2–64 GB of RAM and unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port. For most first deployments, compare KVM plans around 1–2 vCPUs, 1–2 GB RAM and at least 20 GB of NVMe, then select the allowance and region that fit your traffic and users. Prefer 2 GB when a database shares the machine, and reject any offer whose renewal, tax, IPv4, backup or egress terms you cannot calculate. Start small, monitor real pressure and scale the specific resource that becomes a bottleneck.
The 2026 market summaries show why verification is essential: entry-level specifications and prices vary widely, and several attractive figures come from commercial comparison sites rather than primary pricing pages. Treat them as leads, confirm the provider’s current terms at checkout, and recalculate the total whenever a promotion ends or your workload changes.
