Cheap Laptops for Students: 5 Budget Picks and How to Choose

Five budget laptop picks for students, with guidance on choosing Windows or ChromeOS, checking exact configurations, and matching hardware to coursework.

The right cheap student laptop depends first on whether your coursework needs Windows software. For browser-based classes and writing, a Chromebook may be enough; for Windows-only programs, choose a Windows laptop and verify its exact configuration. These five models are useful starting points, not a universal performance ranking. Prices and availability change, so check the specific model number before buying.

Five budget laptops for students

The shortlist below reflects recommendations and tests published in 2026, with one older detachable Chromebook included for students who value tablet use. Battery figures belong to the publishers’ tested configurations and workloads; they are not guarantees for every model or student.

Laptop Best fit What to know
HP OmniBook 3 14 (2025) Windows coursework near a $500 budget RTINGS’ tested 14-hy0017nr has an AMD Ryzen 5 40 processor, 8GB soldered RAM, and a 256GB SSD. RTINGS reports roughly 11 hours of battery life in its assessment. The memory cannot be upgraded in this configuration, and other OmniBook 3 versions differ. RTINGS’ student-laptop guide
ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) Web-first coursework on a large screen The 15.6-inch screen and keyboard suit ordinary browsing and writing. Choose a configuration with 8GB RAM if you expect to keep multiple tabs and Android apps open. ChromeOS does not run most Windows programs; RTINGS also notes a washed-out display and battery life that may not last a full school day. RTINGS’ under-$500 guide
Acer Aspire Go 15 Lower-cost Windows basics Tom’s Guide tested a 15.6-inch 1920×1080 configuration with an Intel Core i3-N305, 8GB RAM, and 128GB storage. It praised the keyboard, ports, and battery life, but found performance weak and the webcam limited to 720p. Its guide described a $299 price when published; that is a dated price snapshot, not a current quote. Tom’s Guide’s under-$500 guide
HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch (2025) Cloud-oriented study with a larger display TechRadar’s reviewed version has an Intel Core i3-N305, 8GB LPDDR5, 128GB UFS, and a 15.6-inch Full HD 144Hz screen. TechRadar measured more than 11 hours of continuous use in its test. The cloud-focused ChromeOS experience is not suited to demanding 3D or video-editing software; the numpad may make the keyboard feel cramped, and the laptop is not convertible. TechRadar’s student-laptop guide
Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021) Portable tablet use and media RTINGS describes a ChromeOS tablet with a detachable keyboard, kickstand, and 13.3-inch OLED display. The keyboard is better for shorter typing sessions, and there is no headphone jack; wired audio may need a USB-C adapter. As an older model, its condition, seller, and availability warrant particular attention. RTINGS’ under-$500 guide

Check software compatibility before choosing an operating system

Choose Windows when a course requires desktop software

If a class specifies a Windows application, a Chromebook is not a safe substitute unless your school provides a supported web version or remote access to that software. Confirm requirements with the instructor or school IT department before buying. The Aspire Go 15 and OmniBook 3 14 are Windows options in this shortlist, but their budget configurations are intended for everyday work rather than demanding editing tasks.

Choose a Chromebook for browser-based work

A Chromebook can suit writing, research, online coursework, and other work that runs in a browser or supported Android app. Check each required application, including any exam, lab, or accessibility software; a familiar app name does not guarantee that its full desktop version is available on ChromeOS.

Match the configuration to your workload

Look at the exact model number, not just the product family

Budget laptop lines can include different processors, memory, storage, and display panels under similar names. The OmniBook 3 14 tested by RTINGS has 8GB of soldered memory, but that detail should not be assumed for every OmniBook listing. Compare the full SKU and specifications shown by the retailer with the configuration reviewed.

Decide whether 8GB of memory is enough for you

For light browsing and writing, entry-level hardware may be adequate. Keeping many browser tabs, a video call, and other apps open at once places greater demands on a laptop. RTINGS says the tested 8GB OmniBook may feel sluggish under that combined workload; its memory cannot be upgraded. If your study habits involve heavy multitasking, prioritize a configuration with more memory when your budget allows.

Check display resolution and storage

Tom’s Guide advises avoiding most 720p laptop displays unless the budget is extremely tight, noting that affordable 1080p panels are available. The Aspire Go 15 configuration in its guide is 1920×1080, but other configurations may differ. Also check storage: the reviewed Acer has 128GB, while RTINGS’ tested OmniBook has a 256GB SSD. Consider how much space your files and required applications need, and whether your school provides cloud storage.

Balance screen size, typing comfort, and portability

A 15.6-inch laptop gives you more screen area for documents and side-by-side windows, but it is larger to carry. The Duet 5’s detachable format is more flexible for tablet and media use, though its smaller keyboard is less comfortable for long typing sessions. The Chromebook Plus adds a numpad, which TechRadar says can make its keyboard feel cramped. If possible, try a keyboard layout in person or check the return policy before committing.

Interpret battery claims as test results, not promises

Published runtimes depend on the test configuration and workload. RTINGS reports roughly 11 hours for its tested OmniBook 3 14, TechRadar measured more than 11 hours of continuous use on its reviewed Chromebook Plus, and Tom’s Guide reports 10+ hours for its tested Aspire Go 15. Streaming video, screen brightness, Wi-Fi use, calls, and the exact configuration can all affect a student’s actual runtime.

Check price and availability at purchase time

The cited Acer guide’s $299 figure was reported when that guide was published, not verified as a current offer. The Lenovo Duet 5 is a 2021 model, so current stock and condition may vary. For every candidate, compare the listed SKU, current price, return terms, and seller; a low price is not useful if the configuration lacks the software compatibility or memory your coursework needs.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
