Cheap Earbuds and Headphones: 8 Picks for Different Budgets and Uses

Eight budget earbuds and headphones for commuting, workouts, desk listening, and quiet-room use—with key trade-offs and price-ceiling caveats.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this guide, “cheap” means under $50 for earbuds and the two over-ear picks specifically identified as under $50; the broader over-ear shortlist also includes options whose current price may exceed that ceiling. Prices and stock change, so check the listing before buying. These eight models come from separate review guides, not one head-to-head test, so their test results should not be treated as directly comparable.

Eight budget headphones and earbuds at a glance

Soundcore Space A40 Wireless earbuds Feature-rich commuting, if the current price is under $50 Price can rise above $50; microphone recording is weaker
Soundcore P31i Wireless earbuds Lower-cost features, including ANC and multipoint ANC is weaker than the Space A40, and the fit may shift
Soundcore Life Q30 Wireless Wireless over-ear Travel and longer listening with ANC Thin padding may cause fatigue during long sessions
Soundcore Life Q20 2024 Wireless over-ear Over-ear listening under $50 Less effective against low-frequency rumble than the Q30; no hard case
Audio-Technica ATH-M20x Wired over-ear Desk listening without charging Fixed cable, no microphone, limited isolation
Philips SHP9500 Wired open-back over-ear Quiet-room listening to vocals and instruments Leaks sound and offers little isolation

Best cheap earbuds

Soundcore Space A40: the feature-rich commute pick

RTINGS names the Space A40 its best-under-$50 earbud pick. It has adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC), a comfortable fit, and a warm, bass-forward sound that can be adjusted with app EQ. RTINGS reports up to eight hours of use with ANC enabled. Its microphone recording is weaker, and its price can sometimes rise above $50, so confirm the current listing if that is your ceiling.

Soundcore P31i: lower-cost features, with fit caveats

RTINGS identifies the P31i as a cheaper option with adaptive ANC, multipoint pairing, and LDAC support. It lasts a little over seven hours with ANC on according to the review. Its ANC is not as effective as the Space A40’s, and the review notes budget-feeling tips and some shifting while talking or chewing. Consider it when the lower price matters more than the strongest cancellation or a particularly secure fit.

EarFun Free 2S: workout-friendly basics

Engadget’s under-$50 wireless earbud pick, the Free 2S, has an IPX7 water-resistance rating. Its stated battery specification is seven hours in the earbuds and 30 hours total with the case; it also supports EQ and wireless charging. It has no ANC, transparency mode, or multipoint. Engadget describes its sound as bass-heavy and its microphone as sensitive to wind. Check the product documentation for what the water-resistance rating covers, especially before exposing the charging case to water.

Best cheap over-ear headphones

Soundcore Life Q30 Wireless: more ANC and a travel case

RTINGS’ best-budget-over-ear pick, the Life Q30, is noted for reducing engine rumble and café noise. RTINGS reports up to 44 hours per charge, adjustable EQ, and an included padded hard case. The padding is thin enough that some listeners may find it tiring in long sessions, and the plastic frame does not feel premium. It is a practical choice when ANC and included storage matter more than plush construction.

Soundcore Life Q20 2024: the under-$50 over-ear option

RTINGS identifies the Life Q20 2024 as its under-$50 over-ear choice. Its review reports nearly 49 hours of continuous use, a comfortable fit, and adjustable EQ. Compared with the Q30, it handles low-frequency rumble less effectively and does not include a hard case. Choose it for a lower-cost over-ear design and long reported battery life, not for the stronger rumble reduction.

1MORE SonoFlow SE HQ31: long rated battery life

Tom’s Guide reports manufacturer-rated battery life of 90 hours without ANC and 60 hours with ANC for the SonoFlow SE HQ31; those figures are ratings reported by the review, not independent battery measurements. The review also praises its sound, call quality, and ANC, while noting difficulty with high frequencies and a weaker app experience. It is worth considering if long stated runtime is a priority, but verify its current price against your budget.

Wired and open-back alternatives

Audio-Technica ATH-M20x: no battery to manage

RTINGS’ budget wired choice is suited to desk listening. Its clear mid-range reproduction and wired connection avoid charging and wireless latency. The cable is not removable, there is no microphone, and it does not isolate well from surrounding noise. It is a straightforward option for a quiet desk setup rather than calls or noisy commutes.

Philips SHP9500: open sound for a quiet room

RTINGS describes the SHP9500 as an entry-level open-back headphone with detailed vocals and instruments and a relatively flat sound profile. Open-back construction allows sound to escape and provides little isolation. That makes it a poor fit for public transit, shared rooms, or recording situations where sound leakage matters; its strengths are most useful in a quiet home listening space.

How to choose between the eight

  • Set a firm price ceiling. The under-$50 labels apply to particular picks in their review guides, not necessarily to today’s checkout price. Space A40 may exceed $50, and current prices for other models are not established here.
  • Choose the form factor for where you listen. Earbuds are easier to carry. Over-ears cover more of the ear and the listed wireless options report longer continuous runtimes, but are bulkier.
  • Match noise control to your setting. ANC can help with travel noise, but budget ANC varies by model. Open-back headphones deliberately provide little isolation, while the ATH-M20x also does not isolate well.
  • Check the fit, not just the feature list. P31i may shift during talking or chewing; Q30 padding may fatigue some listeners over time. For exercise, stability matters alongside water resistance.
  • Pick sound controls that suit your preference. Space A40 and both Q-series over-ears offer EQ, while the Free 2S also includes EQ. A bass-forward default profile may not suit every listener.
  • Do not infer call quality from ANC or price. Space A40 microphone recording is a weakness, and Free 2S microphone performance is affected by wind. The SonoFlow SE HQ31 review praises call quality.

What the review counts do—and do not—tell you

RTINGS says its earbuds guide draws on more than 380 tested pairs of earbuds and in-ear headphones, while its budget-headphones guide reports more than 915 headphones tested. Those figures describe the publisher’s test catalogs, not the size of the market. Because the eight picks here are assembled from different review guides, their battery and noise-cancellation results are useful as each review describes them, but are not a controlled comparison against one another.
