A low board price alone does not establish good value once you add a processor, memory, cooler, graphics output, storage, power supply, shipping and the risk of returning a difficult-to-diagnose legacy part.
What “X79” actually tells you
Intel X79 belongs to the older LGA2011 platform associated with Sandy Bridge-E and Ivy Bridge-E processors and related Xeon E5 generations. LGA2011-3 is a different socket generation used by X99-era systems, generally with DDR4. An LGA2011-3 processor is not automatically compatible with an LGA2011/X79 board. Use the exact motherboard manual and CPU support list as the final authority; the platform overview at this LGA 2011 reference is useful context, not a substitute for model-specific documentation.

Documented examples show why models cannot be treated alike
| Board | CPU and socket information | Memory information | Expansion, storage and size | Important caveats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HUANANZHI X79-8D | Two LGA2011 sockets; the manufacturer says it does not support Core processors or Xeon E5-16XX series. | Eight DDR3 DIMM slots; the product page lists DDR3-1866/1600/1333, four-channel architecture, ECC server and desktop memory support, and up to 8 × 32 GB. The page’s specification states “8 DDR3 memory slots … supports up to 256G.” | Two PCIe 3.0 x16 and two PCIe 3.0 x1 slots; one M.2 NVMe interface; four SATA 2.0 and two SATA 3.0 ports; dual gigabit Ethernet; E-ATX, 30.5 × 29 cm; no onboard display output. | Requires a discrete graphics card. Confirm the exact revision and seller documentation at the HUANANZHI X79-8D specifications page. |
| HUANANZHI X79 GREEN | A hosted manual describes LGA2011 support for Xeon E5 V1/V2 examples. | Four DDR3 slots, a claimed 128 GB maximum and REG ECC support. | NVMe and NGFF M.2 interfaces; ATX, 282 × 220 mm; no integrated graphics. | This information comes from a model-specific, secondary-hosted X79 GREEN manual. Do not transfer it to the X79-8D or another listing. |
For comparison, ASRock’s retail-era X79 Extreme6/GB brief documents its own quad-channel DDR3, ECC conditions, slots and I/O. Those specifications describe that ASRock board, not Chinese X79 models generally.

There is no single universal answer. First identify whether the board has one or two sockets, then check its CPU list and required BIOS version. Some boards accept selected Xeon E5 V1/V2 processors; the X79-8D manufacturer specifically excludes Xeon E5-16XX and Core processors despite using two LGA2011 sockets. Never buy a CPU solely because its package says LGA2011, and never assume a dual-socket board supports every E5 family.
#1 Best Overall
- LGA 2011 Socket: The X79 Server motherboard support Intel LGA2011 socket CPU processors (e.g. Intel Xeon E5 1620/1660/2603/2620/2667/2690, E5 1603 V2/ 2620 V2/26340 V2/2670 V2/2695 V2, etc.)
- Dual-channel DDR3: The Intel LGA 2011 gaming motherboard supports DDR3 Desktop/ECC/RECC memory up to 256GB (4*64GB), and supports 1066/1333/1600Mhz
- Stable Power Supply: 8-phase power supply, all-solid-state capacitor design, fine workmanship, professional stability. And the DDR3 mainboard is equipped with 24+8 pin power interface (please use a brand power supply of at least 500w)
- Rich Interfaces: The Micro ATX placa madre features RJ45 gigabit network interfaces, and the maximum network transmission rate can reach 1000bps/s. And with M.2 slots (support NVME SSD/NGFF SSD), PCIe 3.0 X16, PCIe 2.0 x1, SATA 3.0, SATA 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 2.0
- Excellent performance: The DDR3 computer motherboard uses Intel X79 chipset and 8-layer PCB material. And with Heat dissipation armor protection for strong heat dissipation, to ensure stable bus communication
Does X79 use DDR3 or DDR4?
Original X79-era boards use DDR3, but the permitted module type and population rules are board-specific. Check whether the manual allows non-ECC, unbuffered ECC (UDIMM) or registered ECC (RDIMM/REG ECC), as well as maximum capacity, speed and which slots must be filled. “DDR3 ECC” is not a sufficient purchasing specification: registered and unbuffered modules are not interchangeable by assumption. Do not use DDR4 just because a later LGA2011-3/X99 processor or board is involved.
Physical fit and connections to verify
- Case: measure clearance for the stated form factor. The X79-8D is E-ATX at 30.5 × 29 cm, while the X79 GREEN manual describes an ATX board at 282 × 220 mm; a case that accepts ATX may not accept E-ATX.
- Graphics: boards documented here have no integrated display output. Plan a compatible discrete GPU and monitor connection.
- Power: count the board’s CPU power connectors and confirm that your PSU has the required cables, especially for a dual-socket design.
- Cooling: verify the cooler’s LGA2011 mounting hardware, thermal capacity, socket clearance and case height before ordering.
- Storage and networking: match the exact M.2 key/interface, SATA generations and port count to your drives; confirm the required Ethernet, USB and audio connections.
- Expansion: check the documented PCIe slot layout and lane requirements for your GPU, storage card or other adapter.
A compatibility-first buying process
- Capture the exact identity. Record manufacturer, model, hardware revision and socket generation from the listing and board photographs.
- Download the matching manual. Confirm CPU models, BIOS requirements, memory type, slot population, connectors, dimensions and I/O. Do not rely on a generic “X79” title.
- Check firmware files. The X79-8D page lists audio, BIOS, chipset, LAN, ME, USB 3.0 and manual files with a displayed update date of 09/04/2021. That demonstrates files listed on that page, not continuing support or quality.
- Map the complete parts list. Include CPU, exact memory modules, cooler and bracket, GPU, storage, case, PSU and any adapters. Price shipping and possible return shipping.
- Ask the seller targeted questions. Request confirmation of the revision, socketed CPU support, BIOS version, ECC/RDIMM or UDIMM support, included accessories and testing/return conditions.
- Plan inspection on arrival. Photograph the package and board, check for bent pins or damage, verify model markings, and test at the seller’s stated return deadline before modifying firmware.
Are Chinese X79 motherboards worth buying?
They can be, when the low-cost platform reuses parts you already own and the exact documentation checks out. They are a poor shortcut when you still need to source every component, require modern firmware support, need guaranteed integrated graphics, or cannot absorb the cost and time of a return. No controlled comparison in the available documentation establishes a market-wide failure rate, reliability percentage, current street price or performance ranking, so treat seller terms and compatibility evidence—not the “X79” label—as the basis for value.
