ChatGPT vs. GPT: Which One Are You Using?

ChatGPT is the service you use, GPT is model terminology, and a custom GPT is a configured assistant inside ChatGPT. Here’s how the terms differ.

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s conversational AI service; GPT is the name for a family or category of text-generation models. A GPT model can power a ChatGPT conversation, but the product and the model are not the same thing. OpenAI also uses “GPT” for custom assistants built inside ChatGPT, which is a separate meaning.

What’s the difference between ChatGPT and GPT?

Think of ChatGPT as the service you interact with and a GPT model as technology that can generate text in response to prompts. ChatGPT provides the user-facing experience for asking questions and giving instructions; its available models and tools can vary with account, settings, and time. It is not accurate to assume every ChatGPT conversation uses one fixed model.

Term What it means Where it is used
ChatGPT OpenAI’s conversational AI service and user interface ChatGPT web and apps, subject to availability
GPT model A text-generation model that processes prompts and produces output ChatGPT, API products, and other software integrations, depending on model access
Custom GPT A ChatGPT assistant configured for a particular purpose Inside ChatGPT, subject to plan and workspace rules
API-built assistant A developer-created integration that uses OpenAI models An external app, site, or service

What does GPT stand for?

GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer. OpenAI uses “GPT models” to describe text-generation models trained to understand language and generate text from prompts. In simplified terms, a prompt is the input and the model produces a text response; the acronym names the model technology, not the ChatGPT service.

OpenAI’s developer documentation describes its text-generation models as “generative pre-trained transformers or ‘GPT’ models for short.” Read OpenAI’s key concepts documentation.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI assistant for tasks such as brainstorming, writing, studying, planning, math, coding, and analyzing images or files. The exact capabilities available depend on the account and settings. OpenAI describes ChatGPT as “an AI assistant you can use for everyday tasks.” See OpenAI’s ChatGPT FAQ.

In practical terms, ChatGPT is the product experience: you communicate with it through an interface, and the service uses the models and tools available in that context to respond. The names and availability of models in ChatGPT are not interchangeable with the separate model catalog and access rules for the API.

What is a custom GPT in ChatGPT?

OpenAI also calls purpose-configured assistants within ChatGPT “GPTs” or “custom GPTs.” They can combine instructions, knowledge, and selected capabilities to serve a particular purpose. OpenAI defines them as “versions of ChatGPT configured for a specific purpose.” They are no-code assistants used inside ChatGPT, not a synonym for every GPT model and not the whole ChatGPT service.

That distinction matters when someone says “I made a GPT.” They may mean they configured an assistant in ChatGPT, not that they trained a new model. A developer-built assistant using OpenAI models through an API is a different kind of integration and operates outside the ChatGPT interface.

Can you create a custom GPT now?

Access depends on account type, workspace settings, permissions, and OpenAI’s changing plans. As described in OpenAI’s help documentation on October 7, 2026, personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs. Business, Enterprise, and Edu access depends on workspace settings and role permissions.

OpenAI’s same help page describes plans to retire custom GPTs in affected Enterprise workspaces on December 11, 2026, with other plans expected to follow. It also described a migration experience targeted for September 17, 2026. These are documented plans, not a guarantee that every account has the same access or migration timeline. Check the current account-specific notice and OpenAI’s creating and editing GPTs page before relying on dates or eligibility.

Are ChatGPT and GPT the same thing?

No. ChatGPT is the service, GPT usually refers to the model technology, and a custom GPT is a configured assistant within that service. The terms are related because GPT models can be used to power ChatGPT, but they refer to different layers. If a person is using “GPT” casually, ask whether they mean a model or a custom assistant; context determines which meaning applies.
