ChatGPT describes an under-18 teen experience with linked-parent controls over selected settings but no access to the teen’s chat history. Google lets parents turn Gemini Apps access on or off for a supervised child through Family Link, but the reviewed guidance does not establish a single conversation-visibility rule for every Google account setup. Both companies warn that safeguards can fail, and availability depends on age, location, account type, and rollout.
This comparison reflects official OpenAI and Google documentation available on October 7, 2026. Their features and availability can change, so check the linked help pages for the specific country, account, and Gemini or ChatGPT surface in use.

How the teen and child age rules differ
| Question | ChatGPT | Google Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| How age affects access | Eligible personal accounts identified as under 18 can receive ChatGPT for Teens. OpenAI says this identification may use account-provided age information, verified age, or age prediction. OpenAI: ChatGPT for Teens | Personal-account eligibility generally begins at 13 or the applicable age in the user’s country. Under-13 access in the Gemini mobile app requires parental approval; account type and individual features can have separate rules. Google: Gemini mobile app availability · Google: What you need to sign in to Gemini Apps |
| How a parent can control access | A parent or guardian can link accounts with the teen and manage selected settings; the documented controls are not a general access switch for all ChatGPT use. OpenAI: Managing parental controls in ChatGPT | For a supervised child account where the feature is available, a parent can turn Gemini Apps access on or off using Family Link. Google: Guide your child’s Gemini Apps experience |
| What the parent can see | Linked parents cannot read the teen’s conversation history or monitor activity in real time. OpenAI says a safety notification may include a brief description and a related account action, but not the teen’s transcript. OpenAI: Managing parental controls in ChatGPT | The reviewed Family Link guidance establishes access control, but does not settle conversation visibility for every Gemini account configuration. Do not infer chat access from the ability to enable or disable Gemini Apps. Google: Guide your child’s Gemini Apps experience |
| Activity and data controls documented for families | Linked parental controls include selected options such as whether conversations can help improve models and whether saved memory is used. These are distinct from a parent viewing conversations. OpenAI: Managing parental controls in ChatGPT | Keep activity is unavailable to users under 13 or the applicable local age. Google describes processing Gemini data for service functionality, safety, reliability, and service improvement; consult the Privacy Hub and the activity setting for the account in question. How ChatGPT identifies teens and handles linked parents
OpenAI says an eligible personal account may enter the teen experience when account-provided age information, age verification, or age prediction indicates the person is under 18. Age prediction is not the same as identity or age verification: OpenAI says it may consider general topics discussed, times of day, how and when an account is used, and how long it has existed. The company acknowledges the prediction can be wrong and describes an age-category and verification route for some adults who are misclassified. Details are in OpenAI’s age-prediction explanation.
When a parent or guardian links an account with the teen, the parent can manage selected protections and settings. OpenAI lists options including reducing sensitive content, deciding whether conversations can help improve models, saved-memory use, certain features, and quiet hours. The teen or parent can unlink the accounts. These controls provide some family configuration, not a window into the teen’s chats: OpenAI states, “Parental controls do not let a parent or guardian read or monitor the teen’s conversations.” See Managing parental controls in ChatGPT.

How Gemini supervision works—and where it is limited
Google’s Family Link guidance describes a parent turning Gemini Apps access on or off for a supervised child account. That does not, by itself, answer whether a parent can inspect conversations. Google’s reviewed documentation does not establish a complete visibility rule across Gemini account types, so families should check the applicable account and current Google guidance rather than assume either access or privacy.
The supervised-account feature is rolling out gradually. Google’s reviewed help page says supervised access is unavailable for accounts in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom; some features also have age restrictions or are unavailable to supervised users. These limits are specific to the reviewed guidance and can change. See Google’s Family Link guidance.

What safeguards do—and do not—promise
ChatGPT’s documented teen protections
OpenAI says its teen-sensitive protections are intended to reduce exposure to categories including graphic violence and gore, risky viral challenges, sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay, and content promoting extreme beauty ideals, unhealthy dieting, or body shaming. The company cautions that no system is perfect and that the safeguards do not guarantee every response will be appropriate. Its description is at Reduce sensitive content in ChatGPT.
Gemini’s additional filters for minors
Google describes additional filters for signed-in minors intended to limit harmful content. It also says filters are designed to prevent Gemini from claiming to be a person or have human emotions, or from role-playing a harmful character. Google warns that inappropriate content may still appear: “Our filters try to limit inappropriate content from appearing, but they’re not perfect.” See Guide your child’s Gemini Apps experience.

These descriptions explain the companies’ stated controls, not comparative safety outcomes. The reviewed official product pages do not provide a directly relevant statistic showing that one service prevents harm better than the other.
Privacy: separate chat visibility, activity, and model improvement
For ChatGPT, the clearest documented family boundary is that linked parents cannot read or monitor teen conversations. Separately, the parent can manage certain settings related to model improvement and saved memory. A setting that affects data use is not the same as a parent’s ability to view the underlying chat.

For Gemini, Google says Keep activity is unavailable below age 13 or the applicable local age, and its Privacy Hub explains data processing for functionality, safety, reliability, and service improvement. Those facts do not establish a universal rule about what parents can see. Because Gemini has multiple product surfaces and account configurations, review the current privacy information and activity setting for the specific account rather than treating one setting as a complete privacy description. Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
What changes as a teen gets older
OpenAI says an account identified as 18 or older may leave the teen experience. Teen protections are turned off by default, and linked parental controls and safety notifications end. Automatic transitions are rolling out gradually, so this should not be read as a change already applied to every eligible account. See What changes when a ChatGPT user turns 18.
Best Value
For Google, the general personal-account age threshold is 13 or the applicable local age, but the requirements can vary by account and feature. The available documentation does not support treating that threshold as a single switch that grants every Gemini feature or resolves every supervision setting. Check the account-specific eligibility guidance: What you need to sign in to Gemini Apps.
How families can choose and check settings
- If you want a documented limit on parent chat visibility: OpenAI explicitly says linked parents cannot read or monitor a teen’s conversations. Its parental controls still allow selected settings to be managed.
- If you want to enable or disable a supervised child’s access: Google documents a Gemini Apps on/off control in Family Link where supervised access is available. Confirm regional and feature eligibility first.
- If data use is your main concern: distinguish the question of who can see chats from activity retention and model-improvement settings. Review the current account controls and relevant privacy page for the service you choose.
- For either service: confirm the country, local age rule, personal versus work or supervised account, and exact app or product surface. Treat filters as fallible and keep family expectations about appropriate AI use explicit.
For official details, start with OpenAI’s ChatGPT parental-controls guide or Google’s Family Link guide for Gemini Apps, then follow the linked eligibility and privacy pages for the account being used.
