The key differences are what happens to new chats, whether they remain in history, how long temporary chats may be retained, and whether feedback or safety review creates exceptions. This comparison reflects provider help pages accessed October 7, 2026; consumer settings may differ from business, education, API, and administrator-managed accounts.
At a glance: what each control changes
| Service | Model-improvement control | History and temporary-chat retention | Important exceptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Eligible personal-account users can turn off Improve the model for everyone. New conversations are then not used to train OpenAI models, but regular chats can remain in history. OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT. | Temporary Chat stays out of history and does not create or update memories. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. OpenAI’s Temporary chat in ChatGPT. | Temporary Chat is not the same as disabling Memory. It may be personalized if you choose, and saving it turns it into a regular chat. Feedback may make the associated conversation eligible for training. |
| Claude | Consumer users can turn off the model-improvement setting for new chats and coding sessions. The change does not undo training already started or models already trained. Anthropic’s model-training policy. | Incognito chats are excluded from training and Claude history and memory. Anthropic says they are retained for 30 days by default; Enterprise custom retention may be longer. Claude’s incognito-chat guidance. | Safety-flagged chats may still be used for trust-and-safety work. Incognito chats can still use profile information such as custom styles and preferences. |
| Gemini Apps | With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity or train Google AI models, unless you submit feedback. With it on, chats and shared content are saved and used to develop and improve Google services, including generative AI models. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub. | Temporary Chats and chats made with Keep Activity off may be retained with the account for up to 72 hours for service and safety purposes. When Activity is on, the default auto-delete period is 18 months; users can choose 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Google’s Gemini Apps Activity settings. | Google says human reviewers may assist with service and safety even when Keep Activity is off or Temporary Chat is used. Reviewed data may be kept for up to three years and is not deleted when the user deletes Activity. |
ChatGPT: disable training without losing ordinary chat history
Turn off model improvement
In an eligible personal account, open Settings → Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. This affects new conversations: it does not remove existing chats from the history list. OpenAI treats model improvement and Memory as separate controls, so changing this setting alone does not mean ChatGPT will stop using saved memories to personalize replies.

Use Temporary Chat for a chat absent from history
Start a Temporary Chat when you do not want the conversation to appear in history or create or update memories. It is not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Temporary Chat can still draw on personalization if you choose, and saving the chat converts it to a regular conversation.
Submitting feedback is a separate action: OpenAI says the conversation associated with feedback may be used to train models even when model improvement is otherwise disabled. If a GPT action sends information to an external service, that recipient’s privacy policy governs what it does with the information.

Claude: separate model improvement from incognito chats
Change the consumer model-improvement setting
Claude’s consumer setting controls whether new chats and coding sessions are used for future model training. Turning it off does not reverse training that has already begun or remove information from models already trained. Anthropic also says safety-flagged conversations may be used for trust-and-safety purposes.
Choose incognito for a chat outside ordinary history
Incognito chats are not used for model training and are not saved to Claude history or Claude memory. Anthropic’s default retention period is 30 days; an Enterprise organization may set a longer custom period. Incognito does not remove all personalization: Claude can still access profile information such as custom styles and preferences.
Feedback has a longer-lived exception. Anthropic says a conversation associated with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down may be stored for up to five years and used for training as permitted by law. That feedback practice is distinct from the normal retention setting for incognito chats.

Turn Keep Activity off for future conversations
In Gemini Apps, open Settings & help → Activity to review Keep Activity. When it is off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google AI models unless you submit feedback. Chats made while it is off may still be kept with the account for up to 72 hours so Google can provide the service and protect Google, users, and the public.
Use Temporary Chat, and understand human review
Temporary Chats also stay out of ordinary Activity, but are retained for up to 72 hours for service and safety. Google says human reviewers may assist with service and safety purposes even in Temporary Chats and when Keep Activity is off. For chats reviewed by service providers, Google says it may retain the data for up to three years; deleting Activity does not delete those copies. When Keep Activity is on, the default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity is 18 months, configurable to 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite.
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub warns: “If that setting is on, don’t enter data that’s confidential or that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve its services.”
Google also notes that connected apps and other Google activity have separate handling, so the Gemini control should not be assumed to govern every data flow from an integrated service.
How to choose the right control
- You want to stop future model-improvement use but keep normal chats: turn off ChatGPT’s model-improvement control or Claude’s consumer model-improvement setting. In Gemini, turn off Keep Activity, knowing it also affects whether future chats appear in Activity.
- You want a conversation out of ordinary history: use ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Claude incognito, or Gemini Temporary Chat. These modes differ in retention and do not promise zero provider access.
- You want to limit personalization: inspect memory and profile controls separately. ChatGPT’s Memory is distinct from its model-improvement setting; Claude incognito is not saved to Claude memory but may still use profile information; Gemini Temporary Chat avoids remembering or personalizing from that conversation.
- You use a managed or commercial account: check the terms and administrator controls for that account rather than assuming consumer settings apply. OpenAI says training is off by default for Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API offerings, but workspace retention and access policies still apply. The cited Claude model-improvement setting is for consumer use; commercial terms are separate.
What these controls do not establish
There is no single “most private” winner across these services without first deciding whether the priority is training, visible history, memory, short retention, or limits on human review. The providers describe different controls and exceptions, and the listed retention periods are their own published policies—not the result of an independent head-to-head privacy test. In particular, opting out of training should not be confused with deleting prior chats, erasing already-trained models, or preventing all temporary service and safety retention.
