Both ChatGPT and Claude can control smart-home devices through Home Assistant, but neither is documented here as a universal, direct controller for every device or ecosystem. Home Assistant provides separate integrations for OpenAI and Anthropic, and limits each AI agent to the entities you expose. The practical choice depends on your Home Assistant setup and whether you prefer a conversation, a voice pipeline, or a connection through MCP—not on a documented performance winner.
Can ChatGPT or Claude control smart-home devices?
Yes, when Home Assistant is the control layer. Its OpenAI conversation integration and Anthropic integration let an AI conversation agent provide information about and control the Home Assistant entities you make available to it.

This is not the same as giving the ordinary ChatGPT or Claude app automatic access to every device in your home. You need a Home Assistant instance, the relevant integration, provider API access, and compatible devices configured in Home Assistant. The integration documentation does not establish direct, universal control by either service outside such a setup.

| Route | What it supports | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI integration | OpenAI-powered conversation agent in Home Assistant; it can answer questions about and control exposed entities. | Requires an API key and is a paid service. The integration works only with the official OpenAI API endpoint. |
| Anthropic integration | Anthropic-powered conversation agent in Home Assistant; it can answer questions about and control exposed entities. | Requires an API key and is a paid service. Home Assistant also documents its use in an Assist voice pipeline. |
| Home Assistant MCP Server | Allows compatible MCP client applications to access Home Assistant context and exposed controls; the documentation names Claude Desktop and ChatGPT as examples. | This is a separate integration route, not default access for every ChatGPT or Claude app or account. |
Home Assistant documents the available routes, not a matched test of how reliably, quickly, or easily they operate devices in a particular home.

What does “exposed entities” mean for device access?
Home Assistant represents devices and their functions as entities—for example, a light, a switch, or a sensor. The AI agent’s reach is bounded by the entities exposed to it. Choosing what to expose is therefore a key part of configuring access: an agent should not be assumed to see or control every device in Home Assistant.
What works in practice depends on your device’s Home Assistant integration, how its entities are configured and named, and which entities you expose. The documentation establishes the access boundary, but not the behavior or success rate of every device model.

Can Claude work with Home Assistant voice control?
Yes. Home Assistant documents configuring Claude as the conversation agent in an Assist pipeline. That pipeline can be used through the Home Assistant interface, companion apps, or an Assist satellite. This establishes a documented voice route; it does not establish that Claude’s voice experience is better than OpenAI’s.

How does MCP differ from a conversation integration?
The Home Assistant MCP Server is another way to connect an AI client to Home Assistant. Its documentation describes giving compatible clients—including Claude Desktop and ChatGPT—access to Home Assistant context and exposed controls.
MCP should not be confused with the OpenAI or Anthropic conversation integrations. It is a distinct connection path, and the documentation’s examples do not mean that every consumer app has Home Assistant access enabled automatically. Which route is a better fit depends on the client, accounts, and interface you plan to use.

Will this replace Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa?
Not necessarily. Home Assistant says it can work alongside Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa, allowing Home Assistant devices to be exposed to those services so you can continue using their apps and voice assistants. That ecosystem compatibility does not mean ChatGPT or Claude directly replaces those assistants, nor does it guarantee that a particular device works: device support depends on its integration and configuration in your setup.

- Your existing setup: If you do not already run Home Assistant, assess whether you want to introduce it as the control layer. The cited integration pages require a Home Assistant instance but do not specify particular hardware.
- Your preferred interaction: Claude has a documented Assist voice-pipeline route. MCP is a separate option when you want to connect a compatible client.
- Your access boundaries: Review the entities you expose and make sure they match the information and controls you want the agent to have.
- API billing: Both provider integrations require an API key and are paid services. Check each provider’s current billing and usage controls for your intended model and use; the available documentation does not establish a comparable household cost.
- Your actual devices: Confirm that your devices are supported and configured in Home Assistant. The general integration descriptions cannot establish compatibility for every model.
The official integration pages describe capability and configuration, not comparative performance. They do not establish that either provider is more reliable, faster, easier, more private, or cheaper for a typical home. Those outcomes depend on your own devices, configuration, usage, and provider settings.
