ChatGPT Spaces can bring shared pages, files and Google Drive context together, reducing the need to shuttle text between apps. But a Space page is not a Google Doc: Drive remains the place for the original file, its permissions and the full Google Docs workflow.
What ChatGPT Space is—and what a page does
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Space as a shared place to organize pages, files and work. A team can group pages around a topic, share a Space with collaborators and create pages independently. A page is a document that people and ChatGPT can edit together: it can hold notes, plans or a team handbook, include child pages, and support revisions and collaborator comments. Spaces can also bring in spreadsheets, presentations, Sites, images and uploaded files. OpenAI’s Space overview describes the feature and its intended use.

The useful distinction is that a Space page is an editable ChatGPT document, while a Google Doc remains a file in Drive. A Space can be a place to develop or share work with ChatGPT; that does not make it a drop-in replacement for Google Docs.
What the Google Drive connection lets ChatGPT do
The Google Drive app connects ChatGPT to files and folders the connected Google account can already access. It covers Google Docs, Sheets and Slides through one Drive connection, with available actions depending on permissions and workspace settings. OpenAI’s setup and help documentation describes the connection and its limits.

Instead of copying passages into a prompt, you can ask ChatGPT to find a Drive file, summarize it, compare it with other material, or use it as context for a draft. OpenAI gives examples such as finding a project plan and summarizing next steps, comparing budget spreadsheets, drafting a customer update from launch notes, and updating a document with meeting action items. Its Google Drive product page also describes synthesizing information across documents and applying document or presentation standards.
For example, OpenAI’s Help Center suggests: “Find the latest project plan in my Google Drive and summarize the next steps.” Another example is: “Update this document with the action items from our meeting.” These are prompts for working with connected Drive material; they do not guarantee that every editing operation is available on every account.
Where the copy-paste dance still stops
Drive provides context to ChatGPT, but a connected-file workflow is not the same as moving all Docs editing into ChatGPT. Some actions—such as creating, updating, moving, sharing or deleting a file—require the relevant Google permissions and may require confirmation. An administrator may also limit which actions ChatGPT can use.

If a document’s canonical home, access controls or collaboration process must remain in Google Docs, keep the Doc there and use ChatGPT as a connected assistant rather than treating a Space page as the same file.
Space pages and Drive files have different sharing boundaries
Linked Drive files retain their original permissions. Connecting or linking a file does not give Space collaborators access to the underlying Drive file if they could not otherwise open it. But text copied or summarized onto a Space page is visible to people who can access that page. Those are different sharing consequences: a source link and a page containing extracted content should not be treated as equivalent.
OpenAI also says that sharing a page does not share a user’s private chats or saved memory. Before putting a summary or excerpt on a shared page, check who can access the page and whether the content belongs there.

Availability depends on accounts and administrators
Access to the Google Drive app can vary by ChatGPT plan, location, workspace configuration and Google Workspace policies. In a managed workspace, a ChatGPT administrator may need to enable the app or approve actions. Google Workspace administrators separately control whether the OpenAI app is trusted for the OAuth permissions it requests.

Sync is limited to eligible managed workspaces; personal and individual ChatGPT accounts cannot configure it. Sync does not grant access to Drive files a member could not open themselves. Also, seeing a filename or file details is not proof that ChatGPT retrieved or can analyze the file’s contents.
OpenAI’s help page is the appropriate place to check current setup and availability: Google Drive app and setup in ChatGPT. Product access and enabled actions can change, so confirm the options shown in your account or ask your workspace administrator.

This is a practical distinction, not a complete feature-by-feature comparison: OpenAI’s materials define Space pages and the Drive connection, but do not establish that the two products have identical document features. For many workflows, the sensible arrangement is to keep the source Doc in Drive and bring its context into ChatGPT when you need help understanding, comparing or drafting from it.
What the rollout reports do—and do not—confirm
TechRadar reported on September 30, 2026 that Spaces was replacing the Library tab for Pro, Business and Enterprise users, and described Pages as live documents that can use connected apps. That is a reported rollout detail, not a complete official plan-by-plan availability statement. Check the product available to your account; the report does not mean Google Docs is discontinued or that every user has Spaces.
