Choose based on where the work and its shared context already live. ChatGPT shared Projects organize files, instructions, and AI chats around a common goal; Slack makes agents participants in channel conversations; Microsoft Teams’ Channel Agent works from channel and meeting activity. These tools are not mutually exclusive: OpenAI also documents ChatGPT inside Slack and Teams, and connections that bring Slack or Teams data into ChatGPT.
“ChatGPT Spaces” is not the official feature name used in the OpenAI product documentation covered here. The closest match for a shared work area is a shared Project. OpenAI’s workspace agents are a separate feature for packaging workflows teammates can reuse. This comparison reflects documented capabilities and requirements as of October 4, 2026; availability and admin controls can vary by organization.

How do the collaboration models differ?
The key distinction is the team’s primary collaboration surface: persistent AI context, a live messaging stream, or Microsoft 365 channel and meeting work. Comparing feature counts alone can be misleading because each product puts the agent in a different place and gives it a different kind of context.

| Option | Primary collaboration surface | How people direct or review agent work | Documented workflow reach | Access and availability controls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT shared Projects | Shared files, instructions, project chats, and project-scoped memory. | Members start or branch chats and use shared context asynchronously. | AI-assisted work grounded in the Project’s shared context. Reusable workflows belong to workspace agents, a separate feature. | Project membership and chat or edit rights; OpenAI’s September 25, 2025 announcement said Business, Enterprise, and Edu availability, with Enterprise and Edu defaulted off and admin access control. |
| ChatGPT workspace agents | A reusable agent in ChatGPT or, when configured, Slack. | Teammates use a shared agent; builders can give it tools, connected apps, files, and instructions. | Connected tools and apps, custom MCPs, and scheduled runs are documented; exact actions depend on configuration. | Sharing roles and administrator controls govern who can build, run, and publish agents. Connector authentication affects what an agent can access or do. |
| Slack agents | One-to-one agent conversations, channels, and agent sessions. | People can discover agents, use them directly, add them to channels, and mention them in shared discussions. Slack’s August 31, 2026 update describes code channels where teammates can observe, guide, and review agent work. | Agent and app capabilities depend on the installed agent or integration. Slack also documents AI summaries, recaps, and search. | Workspace installation, permissions, licensing, and feature rollout affect access. |
| Microsoft Teams Channel Agent | A Teams channel, its related meetings, and associated team activity. | Members can ask questions, review or customize generated status reports, and work with suggested meetings, tasks, reminders, and email drafts. | Documented actions include meeting setup, task creation and reminders, channel or meeting Q&A, and drafting or sending email. | Interaction requires a Copilot subscription, membership in the channel where the agent was created, and admin permission to use Teams apps. Members without Copilot may see output but cannot interact with the agent. |

When are shared ChatGPT Projects the right fit?
Choose a shared Project when the team needs a persistent AI workspace organized around a goal rather than another place to hold real-time conversation. Members share files and instructions, work in project chats, and can start a one-to-one conversation or branch another member’s conversation. Project memory stays scoped to the Project, giving related AI work a common context without treating every project as one undifferentiated chat history.
OpenAI described shared Projects as supporting asynchronous collaboration and called the September 25, 2025 release “an early step toward team collaboration in ChatGPT.” That framing matters: the announcement positioned Projects as shared AI-assisted work, not as a replacement for a team’s real-time messaging service.
Use Projects for shared context; use workspace agents for repeatable work
A Project is where people and AI work with shared files and instructions. A workspace agent is the better fit when a team wants to reuse a defined workflow, connect tools or apps, or run work on a schedule. OpenAI documents building and previewing agents, connecting apps, tools, files, and custom MCPs, sharing agents with members or groups, and scheduling them. Agent sharing includes chat and edit roles, and administrators can control who may build, run, or publish agents.

- COOPERATIVE STRATEGY: Work as a team against the game itself in Pandemic. Players combine their roles and actions to contain four global outbreaks, share knowledge, and race to complete all four cures before time runs out.
- SPECIALIST ROLES: Play as the Medic, Scientist, Researcher, Operations Expert, and more. Each role has distinct abilities that shape team strategy and make every player's decisions important from start to finish.
- TEAMWORK GAMEPLAY: Pandemic rewards planning, card management, and coordinated moves. This cooperative strategy game creates tense decisions each round as players balance immediate threats with long-term progress.
- SERIES ENTRY POINT: Pandemic is the base game that introduces the wider series, including Pandemic Legacy Season 1. Learn the core systems here, then build on that experience in future campaign play.
- GROUP GAME NIGHT: For 2-4 players ages 8 and up, Pandemic plays in about 45-60 minutes. It fits family game nights at home, family vacations, adult board game groups, and players looking for a teamwork-focused tabletop challenge.
These features can complement one another, but they solve different problems: a shared Project preserves team context, while an agent packages a workflow for reuse. Do not assume a Project itself is a scheduled automation or that every connected tool is available to every agent.
When does Slack make more sense?
Slack is the natural choice when people need to see and steer agent work in the same conversation stream where they coordinate with colleagues. Slack documents one-to-one agent conversations, adding an agent or app to a channel, and discovering agents, resuming conversations, and tracking sessions through its Agents & tools area. In a channel, an interaction may be visible to channel members or private to the person using it, so the interaction context matters.
Slack’s August 31, 2026 product update describes code channels: dedicated channels where conversation, code diffs, and previews are visible to the team while an agent works. Teammates can watch, give feedback, and sign off. The update also describes an Agents tab for viewing sessions and status. These capabilities are subject to rollout and licensing; do not assume every Slack workspace has them.

Slack’s AI assistance is broader than agent participation
Slack also documents channel and thread summaries, daily recaps, enterprise search, and Slackbot as an AI agent. Slack says an internal pilot analysis of channel recaps, thread summaries, and AI search answers found an average of 97 minutes saved per user per week. That is Slack’s own undated vendor-reported pilot figure, not an independent result or a comparison with ChatGPT Projects or Teams; it should not be treated as a predicted saving for your organization.

When is Microsoft Teams Channel Agent the better fit?
Teams Channel Agent is oriented toward work already organized in Teams channels and meetings. Microsoft documents AI-generated status reports for team review and customization, use of meeting transcripts as knowledge, suggested meeting setup, task creation and reminders, Q&A in channels, group chats, and meetings, and drafting or sending emails.
This makes it a close fit when an agent needs to help turn channel and meeting activity into coordination work. It is not simply a shared ChatGPT Project placed inside Teams: its documented workflows are tied to Teams activity and Microsoft’s access and subscription requirements.

Can you use ChatGPT with Slack or Teams instead of choosing one?
Yes. OpenAI documents @ChatGPT in supported Slack and Teams conversations. An organization configures the assistant’s instructions and tools; it can use available conversation context and configured connections, and replies in a shared conversation are visible to its participants.
Embedding @ChatGPT is different from connecting Slack or Teams to an individual ChatGPT session. Connecting an app for use in ChatGPT does not, by itself, install or enable @ChatGPT in the organization’s Slack or Teams. Likewise, @ChatGPT does not automatically inherit the requesting person’s access to private files, apps, or channels: configured connections, workspace settings, and account permissions determine the available context and actions.
What should administrators check before enabling agents?
Permissions are part of the product decision, not a setup detail to postpone. An agent can have access through a connector or authenticated account that differs from the access of the teammate asking it for help.
For ChatGPT workspace agents
- Set who may build, run, and publish agents, and assign chat or edit roles deliberately.
- Review every connected app, tool, file, and custom MCP against the workflow’s actual need.
- For an agent deployed to Slack, OpenAI says all app connections must use shared authentication. It recommends agent-owned service accounts and least privilege.
- Avoid sharing an agent built with a person’s own authenticated connections without understanding the risk: other users may be able to reach data or perform actions through the builder’s credentials.
For Slack and Teams
- In Slack, check workspace app installation and channel controls, and confirm whether agent conversations or actions are visible to channel members.
- In Teams, confirm the interacting user has a Copilot subscription, belongs to the agent’s channel, and is covered by admin permission to use Teams apps.
- For @ChatGPT in either service, verify the organization’s configured instructions, tools, and connections rather than assuming the assistant inherits each requester’s personal access.
How should a team choose?
- Choose shared ChatGPT Projects when the team needs shared files, instructions, project-scoped memory, and asynchronous AI work around a common goal.
- Choose ChatGPT workspace agents when the priority is a reusable, connected, or scheduled workflow with centrally governed sharing.
- Choose Slack agents when the team needs to discover agents and direct or review their work in channels and agent sessions.
- Choose Teams Channel Agent when the work should draw on channel and meeting activity and lead into Teams tasks, reminders, or email.
- Combine tools when a team benefits from AI context in ChatGPT and agent interaction in its messaging environment, but treat embedded @ChatGPT, connected apps, and native platform agents as separate configurations.
Before rollout, verify feature eligibility, licensing, administrator settings, and connector permissions in the actual tenant.
