In Codex, the sandbox defines what the agent can access, while the approval policy determines when it must ask to go beyond that boundary.
Which ChatGPT app actions need your approval?
For connected apps, the available permission options can include Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions and Allow all actions. The exact options depend on the app, your account, how it is connected and workspace policy. OpenAI describes Always ask as: “ChatGPT asks before reading app information or making changes.” (OpenAI Help Center: Managing app permissions in ChatGPT.)

Even when a setting allows an action, the app provider’s authorization and workspace rules still matter. An action may also receive additional safety review if it affects another service, exposes sensitive information or is difficult to undo.
What an approval request shows
For a supported app action, ChatGPT may display an approval card describing the app and the proposed action. The available controls can vary: managed-workspace members and actions that need additional safety review may not see an Always allow option. An absent option does not necessarily indicate a problem; it may reflect the applicable policy or the action’s risk.

How to check or change an app’s permission
- Open ChatGPT and go to the connected app’s settings or permission controls. The exact path and labels can differ by app, account and workspace.
- Review the choices shown for that app, such as whether to ask before reading, allow certain low-risk actions or allow all supported actions.
- Choose the narrowest option that suits what you want the app to do. If a choice is unavailable, workspace policy or the app’s supported controls may limit it.
These controls govern ChatGPT’s use of the connected app; they do not replace the authorization granted by the provider. For example, a permission choice cannot grant access to information the connected account itself cannot access.
When does Codex ask before running a command?
Codex approval depends on the surface and its configured sandbox and approval policy. The following labels describe the documented Codex CLI modes; do not assume the same names or behavior apply to Codex desktop, IDE or cloud experiences.

The sandbox sets technical limits, such as which paths Codex can write to and whether it can access the network. The approval policy governs when Codex asks for review, particularly for actions outside those limits. Auto-review can approve some eligible requests, but it does not remove workspace restrictions or eliminate every prompt. OpenAI explains these controls in its Codex approvals and security documentation and Codex CLI reference.

One specific sensitive-capability example is full browser CDP access: Codex requests explicit approval before using it to inspect a website. This example applies to the described Codex browser capability, not to every browser interaction. See OpenAI’s Codex browser documentation.
Why a saved permission may not be enough
Approval is shaped by three separate layers:
- Provider or account authorization: what the connected service and account allow ChatGPT or a plugin to access or change.
- App permissions: whether supported reads or changes should ask first.
- Workspace or sandbox policy: restrictions that can override a personal preference or limit what an agent can do.
For Codex, also account for the product surface—CLI, desktop, IDE or cloud—and its configured sandbox and approval policy. For plugins, app permissions and action approvals operate alongside provider authorization and workspace availability; a user preference cannot bypass those constraints. A practical way to judge an approval prompt
Before allowing an action, check what it will do and what it can affect:

Reading app information and changing it are distinct actions, and settings may treat them differently.
- Is it within the configured boundary? In Codex, check whether the requested file, command or network access is permitted by the sandbox.
- Could it expose sensitive information or affect another service? These are reasons an action may receive additional review.
- Would it be difficult to undo? If so, read the proposed action carefully before approving it.
- Does a workspace policy apply? A managed workspace may restrict options even when a personal setting would otherwise allow an action.
If you do not recognize the proposed action or its effects are unclear, do not approve it. Review the app’s permissions, the connected account’s access, or the relevant Codex sandbox and approval settings before continuing.
