Chat history is the record of your conversations; ChatGPT Memory is personalization context drawn from saved memories and, when enabled, useful details from past chats. They are related but separate: deleting a conversation does not automatically delete a saved memory, and turning Memory off does not erase your chat history.
Chat history, saved memories, and Reference chat history
Chat history is the conversation record visible in your account. It contains the chats you can return to, subject to your retention and deletion choices.

Saved memories are details ChatGPT stores separately as useful context for personalizing future responses. You can ask ChatGPT to remember or forget something, and manage saved memories through the controls available in your account.

It does not preserve every detail from every chat as a permanent, explicit memory. OpenAI says ChatGPT looks for context likely to improve a response, and information derived this way can change as ChatGPT updates what is useful to remember. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT help article also notes that a memory summary is a high-level view and may not include everything ChatGPT remembers.

How the features differ
| Feature | What it represents | How it behaves | What deletion or disabling does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat history | Your conversation record in the account | Chats remain available according to your history and retention controls. | Turning Memory off does not delete chats. Delete a chat separately if you want it removed from history. |
| Saved memories | Specific details stored separately for personalization | They remain until removed and are distinct from the chat where they originated. | Deleting the source chat does not automatically delete a saved memory. Remove both the memory and relevant source chat, and check other places the information may appear. |
| Reference chat history | Relevant context drawn from past conversations | Selective, rather than a complete transcript search or permanent record of every detail; the information may change over time. | Turning it off schedules deletion of information remembered from past chats within 30 days. The original chats remain unless you delete them separately. |
These features may be presented as separate controls, but the available options depend on your plan, region, platform, and workspace settings. OpenAI notes that enabling Reference saved memories may allow Reference chat history to be managed separately. You may not see every control shown in another account’s instructions.
How to check or manage Memory settings
Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account, the page may show Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. Follow the controls available in your account; labels and options are not universal.
Switching off a Memory setting changes future personalization behavior, but it does not necessarily remove the underlying conversation or every separately stored source of information. Choose the removal action that matches what you want gone.

How to remove information ChatGPT remembers
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and review the available memory controls or summary.
- Delete the saved memory containing the detail. If your account offers a way to ask ChatGPT to forget it, verify the result in the memory controls.
- Delete the chat where the detail was originally shared. Deleting only that chat does not remove a separately saved memory.
- Check other possible sources of the same information, including archived chats, Library files, connected apps, and the memory summary, where applicable.
- If your goal is to stop using information from past chats, turn off Reference chat history. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days; the chats themselves are not deleted by this setting.
OpenAI says removal and updates can take time to propagate. If the detail remains available from another source, removing only one copy may not remove it everywhere.
What happens in Temporary Chat?
While a conversation remains a Temporary Chat, it does not create or update memories. If you save it as a regular chat, it follows your account’s normal personalization settings; when Memory is enabled, the saved conversation may be used accordingly. Temporary Chat therefore differs from deleting a chat or turning off Memory.
Does ChatGPT search your history for every response?
No. Reference chat history is selective: OpenAI says ChatGPT does not retain every detail from every conversation and draws on relevant context when it is likely to improve a response. It is not a promise that every old message will be searched or recalled.

Is Memory different from custom instructions?
Yes. Memory concerns information ChatGPT saves or draws from past conversations for personalization. Custom instructions are a separate feature for information or preferences you provide through custom-instruction settings. They are not the same thing as chat history or saved memories.
