ChatGPT Memory and chat history are separate: Memory provides personalization context, while chat history stores conversations. Turning off Memory does not delete past chats, and deleting a chat may not remove a saved memory created from it. The labels and controls available can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Memory and chat history?
Memory is personalization context ChatGPT can use in future conversations. Chat history is the record of saved conversations in your account. They have separate controls and need separate actions when you want to remove both.

A memory summary is a high-level view, not necessarily a complete list of every detail ChatGPT may use or where that information came from. OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately from chat history. Deleting a conversation where you shared something may therefore leave the saved memory in place. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT help page explains the memory controls and their relationship to chats.
What happens when you turn off Memory?
Turning off Memory does not delete past chats. OpenAI’s documentation states: “Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats.” Turning it off and deleting saved information are distinct actions; use the available memory controls to remove individual saved memories when that is your goal.
#1 Best Overall
If you turn off Reference chat history, information ChatGPT remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days. The original conversations remain in chat history unless you delete them separately. This is a scheduled deletion window, not a promise that every copy is immediately erased from all systems. See OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT documentation.
How to review or clear saved memories
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account, you may see controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, a memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. Not every account has every label or control.
- Use the available memory controls to remove the saved memory you no longer want ChatGPT to use.
- If you also want to remove the conversation where you shared that information, delete that chat separately using the steps below.
- Check other places the information may be stored, including archived chats, Library files, and connected apps. Those items are not all removed by clearing Memory.
How to delete a chat—and what deletion means
To delete a conversation, open chat history, select the conversation’s more-options menu, choose Delete, and confirm. The chat is removed from your account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. OpenAI’s policy describes exceptions, including cases involving de-identification and security or legal obligations. Deleted chats cannot be restored in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support. Details are in OpenAI’s deleting and archiving chats documentation.
Archive a chat if you only want it out of the sidebar
Archiving hides a conversation from the regular sidebar; it does not delete it. Archived chats remain in your account and are searchable. Manage them under Settings > Data controls > Archived chats; labels can differ by device.

Library files are managed separately
Deleting a chat does not delete a file saved separately to Library. Remove a file through Library controls where available. OpenAI explains the distinction in its Chat and File Retention Policies.
Does Temporary Chat save anything?
Temporary Chat stays out of chat history and does not create or update memories while it remains temporary. OpenAI states: “Neither option creates or updates memories while the chat remains temporary.” A Temporary Chat may still be retained for safety purposes for up to 30 days. If you save the conversation, it becomes a regular chat and follows the applicable account settings. See OpenAI’s Temporary Chat documentation.
Choose personalization before sending the first message
- Select Temporary when starting a new chat.
- Before sending the first message, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized. You cannot change this choice after the conversation starts.
- Personalized Temporary Chat can use existing memories and custom instructions; Unpersonalized Temporary Chat cannot use them.
Keep model-improvement settings separate from deletion
Model-improvement preferences are not the same as Memory controls or chat deletion. Opting out of model improvement does not delete your conversation history. Likewise, deleting a chat, clearing a saved memory, and removing a Library file are separate actions. See OpenAI’s Data Controls documentation for the relevant data settings.

Quick guide: which action should you take?
| Your goal | Action | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Stop using or remove a saved personal detail | Review Settings > Personalization > Memory and remove the memory using the controls available on your account. | Turning off Memory alone does not delete past chats. |
| Remove a conversation from your account | Delete it from chat history and confirm. | It disappears from the account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to documented exceptions. |
| Keep a conversation but hide it from the sidebar | Archive it. | It remains in your account and searchable. |
| Start a conversation that stays out of history and does not create or update memory while temporary | Choose Temporary when starting a chat. | Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before the first message; safety retention may last up to 30 days. |
| Remove a file saved separately to Library | Delete it through Library controls where available. | Deleting the chat does not delete the Library file. |
| Change whether conversations may be used to improve models | Review the relevant setting under Data Controls. | This preference is not a chat-deletion action. |
