One important distinction: ChatGPT for Mac now has two separate meeting-related tools in OpenAI’s help materials. The newer Meetings plugin is the more direct comparison with Granola; the older Record feature has different availability, setup, and data handling.

Neither vendor documentation nor the materials cited here establish which service transcribes more accurately. Choose by workflow, access, retention, and controls rather than an unsupported accuracy ranking.

How the two capture meetings
ChatGPT Meetings: a ChatGPT-native workflow
- In the ChatGPT macOS app, install Meetings from Plugins and open it from the sidebar.
- Allow microphone and system-audio permissions when prompted.
- In Meetings, click Take notes. Calendar connection is optional for manual use; Google or Outlook calendar access adds reminders and upcoming-meeting support.
- Add personal notes if useful, then stop capture manually or let the session end. OpenAI says Meetings can stop when the laptop lid closes, after an extended period without audio, or when the session reaches four hours.
Meetings uses the transcript, your notes, and any authorized connected-app context to produce a personalized summary and suggested action items. You can review and edit the results and start follow-up actions in ChatGPT. Notes are private by default; if you share the notes page, recipients do not receive the transcript. Granola: a dedicated notebook without a call bot
Granola’s desktop app works with meeting platforms including Zoom, Meet, and Teams. It transcribes microphone and meeting audio in real time on desktop, but you must start it; it does not silently join or auto-record a call. Calendar integration can detect upcoming meetings, not start capture on your behalf. Its mobile app is oriented toward in-person meetings and may temporarily cache audio while processing. Granola says source audio is not retained after notes are generated, while transcripts and user notes are stored. Consent and privacy deserve a separate check
OpenAI instructs users to tell everyone in the meeting and obtain consent before note-taking. The in-app reminder is visible to the user; it does not notify other attendees or obtain consent for you. OpenAI says Meetings audio streams to its servers and is deleted from the Mac and OpenAI servers when notes are ready. OpenAI Meetings guidance

Granola says notes are private by default and audio is not stored, but transcripts and notes remain in the service. Its transparency page says it encourages a clear verbal heads-up and offers meeting chat messages and watermarks for Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams. It says those features are available on all individual plans and can be enforced centrally on Enterprise. These are vendor statements, not a legal determination or a substitute for your organization’s review.

Recording and transcription consent rules vary by location. OpenAI’s separate Record guidance also directs users to check local laws and get the right consents. Follow applicable law and workplace rules, and review current vendor settings and terms if retention, training, notifications, or administration are requirements for your use case.

Granola pricing and meeting-history limits
Granola’s pricing page, checked October 7, 2026, displays these dollar-denominated prices per user per month. The page excerpt does not establish tax, regional currency, billing cadence beyond that wording, or discounts; verify current terms before buying. Granola pricing plans

OpenAI’s Meetings help page describes access by ChatGPT plan rather than listing a separate Meetings charge. That does not establish that every eligible user has access: Meetings is a beta, and Business workspace settings matter.

Do not confuse Meetings with ChatGPT Record
Record is a separate macOS app workflow that can transcribe and summarize meetings, brainstorms, and voice notes, then save notes as canvases in chat history. OpenAI’s Record article lists Plus, Enterprise, Edu, Business, and Pro availability—different from Meetings’ Pro and Business beta list and limited Enterprise alpha. Record supports multi-speaker labels and has a four-hour session cap. OpenAI Record guide
Record also has distinct data controls: for Free, Plus, and Pro accounts, transcripts and canvases can be used for model training when Improve the model for everyone is enabled; Business, Enterprise, and Edu content is excluded by default. Deleting the conversation removes its associated canvas and transcript within 30 days, subject to legal-retention exceptions, and the audio is deleted after transcription. Do not apply these Record-specific availability or retention details to the Meetings plugin.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose ChatGPT Meetings if you already use Pro or Business, have access to the beta, and want summaries and suggested follow-ups where you already work. For Business, confirm that ChatGPT Space and Meetings are enabled in the workspace.
- Choose Granola if you want a dedicated meeting notebook, device-audio capture without a call bot, templates, or a free starting tier. Its Basic plan’s 30-day history may be a constraint if you need older notes.
- Use Granola with ChatGPT if you like Granola’s capture and notebook but want to ask ChatGPT about your notes. Basic MCP access covers your own notes from the last 30 days, but not folder browsing or transcripts; paid tiers provide fuller access.
- Pause for an IT or legal review if your decision depends on specific retention, training, notice, or admin controls. Compare the current settings and terms for your plans; neither tool can be declared suitable for every organization from feature pages alone.
