ChatGPT Edu members may also be able to export, depending on their workspace’s settings and permissions.
Choose the export method for your account

Settings-based self-service export is unavailable while logged out and for Business, Enterprise, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. If you use one of those managed workspaces, ask its owner about organization-managed access. OpenAI’s data controls guidance and export instructions describe the consumer routes.

Export from ChatGPT settings
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account whose data you want.
- Open your profile menu and select Settings.
- Open Data controls, then select Export data.
- Select Export and confirm the request.
- Wait for the notification, then download the archive while signed in to the account that requested it.
OpenAI sends an email or SMS when the export is ready. Processing can take up to seven days, and the download link expires 24 hours after it is sent, according to the OpenAI Help Center.

- Open the OpenAI Privacy Portal.
- Submit a privacy request for a consumer ChatGPT account.
- Choose Download my data and follow the prompts to complete the request.
- When notified that the archive is ready, download it before the link expires.
This is the documented alternative if you cannot use the settings route, including when you cannot sign in. The same export delivery window applies: processing may take up to seven days, and the download link is available for 24 hours after receipt.

Export from a ChatGPT Edu workspace
Edu exports are controlled by workspace configuration and member permissions. OpenAI’s Edu export guidance says the workspace must not have a data-residency configuration, and an owner must enable export for the workspace or an applicable custom role. Members can export their own data.
If the export option is missing, ask the workspace administrator to confirm that export is enabled for your workspace or role and that the workspace has no data-residency configuration.
What the downloaded archive contains
The export arrives as a ZIP file. OpenAI describes it as containing chat history and other relevant account data. Edu exports may include conversations.json (or numbered conversation JSON files in larger exports), files and other assets used in conversations, and account and conversation metadata. Extract the ZIP and check its contents for the conversations and files you need.

Use exported conversations in another personal account
You can upload conversations.json to a new conversation in another personal account to make the exported material available as reference. This is not a full migration: it does not recreate each old conversation as a separate chat or restore the original sidebar. Larger exports may require uploading numbered files separately or splitting them. See OpenAI’s instructions for transferring exported conversations.

Fix common export problems
- The export has not arrived: Processing may take up to seven days. Check your email spam or promotions folders, or your SMS messages, depending on the account. If it has not arrived after seven days, contact OpenAI Support.
- Another request is already pending: Wait for it to finish before submitting another request; ChatGPT may report that an export has already been requested.
- The download link expired or will not open: The link expires 24 hours after receipt. Make sure you are signed in to the account that requested the export. If the link has expired, request a new export through Settings or the Privacy Portal.
- You need data from a managed workspace: Settings-based self-service export is not available for Business, Enterprise, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Ask the workspace owner about the organization’s access process.
- You cannot export from Edu: Ask the administrator to check export permissions and whether the workspace has a data-residency configuration.
- A conversation was deleted: An export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted.
