ChatGPT’s ads are a separate, labeled unit shown below a response, not text written into the answer. That is how OpenAI describes them. Other AI products do it differently or not at all. Google is testing ads that can appear as “Highlighted Answers” inside AI Mode recommendation lists. Anthropic says Claude will stay ad-free. Perplexity has described sponsored follow-up questions and paid media beside answers. Everything below is dated October 7, 2026, and most of it is vendor-stated policy rather than independently audited behavior.
The short comparison
“Sponsored answer” covers several different things. The useful questions are where the ad sits, how it is labeled, whether the company says it changes the answer, and who can see it.
| Product | Format as announced | Company’s stated relationship to answers | Scope and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT ads | Paid placement below the end of a response, labeled sponsored and visually separate. A separate visual format is planned for image generation. | OpenAI says ads run on systems separate from the chat model and advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter answers. | Varies by market, plan, and test eligibility. The image-generation test was announced October 5, 2026 for US Free and Go users later in the month. |
| Google AI Mode | Ads may be eligible as “Highlighted Answers” within a recommendation list. | Google describes the placement as relevant, high-quality ads. It does not say all AI answers are sponsored. | This is Google Search’s AI Mode, not a standalone Gemini chatbot format. Google said it will keep testing. |
| Claude | No ads. | Anthropic says responses will not be influenced by advertisers or include unsolicited third-party product placements. | A policy statement dated February 4, 2026, not a guarantee beyond what Anthropic has said. |
| Perplexity | Sponsored follow-up questions and paid media beside an answer, initially in the US. | The announcement excerpt does not say sponsored content is written into generated text. | Details come from an announcement excerpt only, so treat it as an announced experiment. Current availability is not confirmed here. |
No independent, apples-to-apples audit of these products is available. That means no source supports saying one platform is definitively more trustworthy or less intrusive than another.
How ChatGPT ads work
Placement and labeling
OpenAI’s Help Center says ads can appear below the end of a response, clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from it. It also says that seeing an ad is not an endorsement or recommendation by OpenAI.
Do ads change the answers?
OpenAI says no. The Help Center states that ads do not influence answers, that ad systems are separate from the chat model, and that advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter responses. This is OpenAI’s claim; no outside audit of it was found.

Who sees them, and where
OpenAI’s February 9, 2026 announcement described a US test for logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education were excluded from that test. OpenAI said ads would not appear near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, or politics, nor for users identified or predicted to be under 18.
Later updates on the same page described expansion to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (March 26) and launches in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea (August 11). The Help Center says ads and ad-free controls may appear only where ads are being tested. Treat the country list as a snapshot, not a guarantee that every account in those countries sees ads.

Image generation test
In an October 5, 2026 post, OpenAI said it will test a visual ad format during image generation for Free and Go users in the US, starting later in October with an initial advertiser group. The ads are to be labeled and separate from the generated image. As of the announcement this is a planned test, not a broadly live format.
Privacy and personalization in ChatGPT
Per the Help Center, relevance signals can include the current conversation and basic context such as general location or language. If Personalized Ads is enabled (available since February 2026), relevance may also draw on ad interactions, past chats, and memory.

OpenAI says advertisers never receive chats, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise location, IP addresses, or sensitive information. It says deleted ads data may remain for up to 30 days. These are OpenAI’s disclosures, not an independent privacy audit.
Controls
- Hide or report an ad.
- Adjust personalization.
- Clear ads data.
- Free users can choose an ad-free experience with lower usage limits and reduced access to some features, or upgrade to Plus or Pro. Check the Help Center for current terms, since these controls change.
Other platforms in detail
Google AI Mode: ads inside the recommendation list
Google’s May 20, 2026 announcement says ads may be eligible as Highlighted Answers when AI Mode returns a list of recommendations. Its example was language apps for an upcoming trip. This is the format closest to what people mean by a “sponsored answer”, because the ad sits among the recommendations rather than after them. The claims of relevance and quality are Google’s. The announcement concerns Search, so it is not evidence about ads in a standalone Gemini app.

Claude: no ads
Anthropic’s February 4, 2026 post says: “There are many good places for advertising. A conversation with Claude is not one of them.” The company says Claude will remain ad-free, with no sponsored links next to conversations. It contrasts this with its revenue from enterprise contracts and subscriptions.
Perplexity: sponsored follow-ups and side media
Perplexity’s announcement excerpt describes sponsored follow-up questions and paid media beside an answer, initially in the US. It names Indeed, Whole Foods Market, Universal McCann, and PMG among early partners. The page could not be opened in full, so timing, targeting, and current status are not confirmed here.
What to compare when judging any AI ad format
- Placement: below the answer, beside it, or inside a recommendation list. Inside-the-list placement is hardest to tell apart from organic results.
- Labeling and separation: whether the ad is marked and visually distinct.
- Influence claims: whether the vendor says ads affect answers. Both OpenAI and Anthropic say advertisers do not influence responses; neither claim has been independently verified.
- Privacy and personalization: what signals feed targeting and what you can switch off.
- Availability: market, account tier, and test eligibility.
The advertiser side, and why numbers need care
OpenAI’s October 5 post cites 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users (OpenAI’s own figure) and several campaign results reported by measurement partners. These are single-campaign cases, not typical outcomes:
Rank #3
- WeightWatchers: 15.3% lower attributed cost per acquisition than a blended paid-search benchmark, per DV Rockerbox.
- Dose: 67% of incremental purchases came from new customers, per WorkMagic.
- Portland Leather: 93% of visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new, per Triple Whale.
OpenAI also announced brand-suitability evaluation with Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify. Their CEOs’ statements are partner endorsements, not findings. No neutral cross-platform data was found on user trust, ad recognition, conversion, or whether ads affect answer quality.

If you want ads kept clearly apart from answers, ChatGPT’s below-the-response format is the more separable design, and Claude’s no-ads policy removes the question entirely. Google’s in-list Highlighted Answers deserve the closest reading. All of this rests on company statements, so check labels and settings in your own account.
