What happened in Cianorte
According to TNOnline’s report, the incident occurred on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in Cianorte, in northwestern Paraná. A charger left plugged into an outlet reportedly exploded and ignited materials in a bedroom.
The flames damaged or destroyed the room’s ceiling lining, bed and part of the furniture. Residents tried to contain the fire but called the fire department when they could not control it. Two people were present, and no injuries were reported. Video coverage also identified Cianorte as the location (Bom Dia Paraná/Globoplay).
The key clarification: no phone was connected
The firefighters’ account cited by TNOnline says no cellphone was attached when the charger failed. That distinction matters: the available evidence supports a charger plugged into the outlet as the suspected source, not a phone battery exploding while charging.

The report does not establish the exact electrical mechanism. There is no publicly identified charger brand or model, and the available coverage does not say whether the unit was counterfeit, damaged, uncertified, affected by a voltage surge or connected to a defective outlet. Finding a charger near the point where flames began also does not, by itself, prove a manufacturing defect.
How a charger can start a fire
A wall adapter converts household electricity to the lower-voltage output used by a phone. If components fail, an internal short circuit or loss of current regulation can create intense heat. A damaged cable, loose plug, liquid exposure, overloaded outlet or improvised adapter can add further risk.

Heat becomes more dangerous when the adapter or cable is on a bed, sofa, pillow or other combustible surface. A small electrical fault can then ignite nearby fabric or furniture before anyone notices. The Paraná Fire Department warns that poor-quality or uncertified chargers may overheat, short-circuit and, in extreme cases, explode (CBMPR guidance).
Adapter and cable are separate failure points
A certified adapter does not make a frayed, crushed or poorly made USB cable safe. Inspect both parts, including the plug, casing and connector. Conversely, an unfamiliar brand name alone does not prove that a charger caused a particular fire.

How to reduce charging-fire risk
- Choose chargers and cables with the required Brazilian Anatel approval or certification where applicable.
- Buy from a traceable manufacturer or seller and keep the invoice and warranty information.
- Do not leave a phone charging while you leave the house. Supervision lets you respond to smoke, odor or abnormal heat early.
- Charge on a firm, uncovered surface—not on a bed, sofa or under a pillow.
- Unplug the adapter after use, especially where children or pets can reach or chew the cable.
- Do not overload an outlet or rely on improvised “benjamins” and adapters.
- In a car, start the engine before connecting the phone because engine starting can cause a voltage variation.
- Stop using a battery or device that becomes unusually hot or visibly swollen.
Normal warmth versus warning signs
Some warmth during charging can be normal. Treat these signs as reasons to disconnect power when it is safe and replace the suspect equipment:
- Too hot to touch comfortably
- Burning or chemical odor
- Crackling, buzzing or intermittent charging
- Discoloration, melted plastic, cracks or a loose plug
- A swollen phone battery
How to assess or replace a suspect charger
Certification is more meaningful than appearance. “Original” generally means made by the phone manufacturer or an authorized accessory maker; “certified” refers to meeting applicable Brazilian requirements. A charger can look genuine and still be unsafe, while an unfamiliar logo is not proof of a defect.

- Check for the applicable Anatel certification marking and a legible manufacturer identity.
- Inspect the adapter, cable, plug and connectors for heat damage, cracks, fraying or looseness.
- Confirm that the input and output ratings match the device and the electrical supply for which the charger was designed.
- Do not keep using equipment that smells burnt, buzzes, becomes excessively hot or has melted plastic.
- Replace it with a certified unit from a traceable seller rather than a suspiciously cheap, unidentified listing.
- Follow local electronic-waste rules for disposal; do not put damaged chargers in ordinary household recycling unless the collection service accepts them.
An older Paraná measurement-and-standards enforcement report described unsuitable conductive materials in some seized plugs and mentioned a magnet check as a warning sign (IPEM-PR). That is not a safety certification or a substitute for inspection and official approval.

- Move away and keep other people out of the room.
- If you can do so without approaching flames, switch off the relevant circuit at the breaker.
- Never touch a smoking or burning charger with bare hands.
- Do not throw water onto energized electrical equipment.
- Leave the property if smoke or fire is spreading, and do not re-enter until authorities declare it safe.
- Call 193, Brazil’s free fire-emergency number, and give the address, type of incident and information about anyone injured. Paraná’s emergency service lists residential fires and explosions among the incidents handled (Paraná Public Security Department).
