AMD’s January 6, 2025 CES announcements were primarily a broad expansion of its Ryzen portfolio: the gaming-focused Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D, Ryzen Z2 handheld processors, Ryzen 9000HX laptop chips, and new Ryzen AI Max, Ryzen AI 300, Ryzen 200 and PRO models. The Radeon RX 9070 was part of AMD’s 2025 graphics story, but it was not formally launched at CES; AMD unveiled the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT on February 28, 2025, with board-partner availability announced for March 6.
What AMD actually announced at CES 2025
CES 2025 extended several existing product families rather than introducing one single new platform. AMD’s gaming announcement covered desktop CPUs, handheld APUs and gaming-laptop processors, while a separate announcement expanded its consumer and commercial AI-PC range.

Ryzen 9000: what was new and what was not
The name “Ryzen 9000” covers more than one CES announcement. AMD introduced the original Zen 5 desktop lineup at Computex in June 2024, with availability beginning in July. CES 2025 added the gaming-oriented Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D and previewed the Ryzen 9000HX mobile family; it did not debut the entire desktop range.

The original desktop specifications were:
| Processor | Cores/threads | Base / boost clock | Total cache | TDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 9 9950X | 16 / 32 | 4.3 / up to 5.7 GHz | 80 MB | 170 W |
| Ryzen 9 9900X | 12 / 24 | 4.4 / up to 5.6 GHz | 76 MB | 120 W |
| Ryzen 7 9700X | 8 / 16 | 3.8 / up to 5.5 GHz | 40 MB | 65 W |
| Ryzen 5 9600X | 6 / 12 | 3.9 / up to 5.4 GHz | 38 MB | 65 W |
AMD claimed an average 16% IPC improvement over Zen 4 in its original announcement. That is an AMD laboratory claim, not a universal result across every application or test setup. The platform uses Socket AM5, DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0. AMD said AM5 support would continue through 2027 and beyond; this is a platform-support commitment, not a guarantee that every future processor will work in every existing motherboard without a BIOS update.

What the 9950X3D and 9900X3D add
Both CES chips combine Zen 5 CPU cores with AMD’s second-generation 3D V-Cache. Stacking additional cache close to the processor can reduce trips to system memory in workloads that benefit from a larger cache, which is why AMD positions these parts at the high end of gaming. Their 12- and 16-core configurations also make them candidates for rendering and other multithreaded work.
Cache capacity does not guarantee a win in every game or application. Results depend on the game engine, graphics card, resolution, memory, motherboard firmware and operating-system scheduling. AMD’s “ultimate” or “world’s best” descriptions should therefore be read as company marketing claims rather than independent test conclusions.
Ryzen Z2: three handheld chips, not one architecture
The Z2 family targets Windows and Linux handheld gaming PCs, but the model names hide meaningful differences. AMD described the top Z2 Extreme as using eight Zen 5 cores with RDNA 3.5 graphics. The standard Z2 is different: AMD’s product page lists eight Zen 4 cores and RDNA 3 graphics, with 12 graphics compute units, a 28 W default TDP and a configurable 15–30 W range.

- OC mode(GPU Tweak III): up to 2610 MHz (Boost Clock)/up to 2140 MHz (Game Clock)/ Default mode: up to 2590 MHz (Boost Clock)/up to 2120MHz (Game Clock)
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
| Model | Positioning | Architecture information disclosed | What buyers should verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen Z2 Extreme | Highest-performance handheld tier | Up to eight Zen 5 cores; RDNA 3.5 graphics | OEM wattage, cooling, memory and display |
| Ryzen Z2 | Mainstream handheld tier | Eight Zen 4 cores; RDNA 3 graphics; 12 compute units; 15–30 W configurable | Sustained power and battery behavior |
| Ryzen Z2 Go | Lower-cost or lower-power designs | Different CPU/GPU configuration from Z2 Extreme; exact system implementation matters | Memory bandwidth, resolution and game compatibility |

A handheld’s actual performance is determined by sustained wattage, cooling, memory bandwidth, battery capacity, screen resolution and software. Two devices with the same Z2 label can perform differently if one runs at a higher long-term power limit or uses faster memory. Check whether a product uses Z2, Z2 Extreme or Z2 Go instead of treating “Z2” as a performance grade.
Ryzen AI 300, AI Max and Ryzen 200 for laptops
CES expanded the Ryzen AI 300 range rather than debuting it from scratch. AMD had already announced Ryzen AI 300 and its Ryzen 9 models in 2024; the January announcement added Ryzen AI 7 and Ryzen AI 5 parts, their PRO equivalents, and new Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen 200 families.
| Model | CPU | Boost clock | Integrated graphics | Configurable TDP | NPU rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen AI 7 350 | 8 cores / 16 threads | Up to 5.0 GHz | Radeon 860M | 15–54 W | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 5 340 | 6 cores / 12 threads | Up to 4.8 GHz | Radeon 840M | 15–54 W | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 | 8 cores / 16 threads | Up to 5.0 GHz | Radeon 860M | 15–54 W | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 5 PRO 340 | 6 cores / 12 threads | Up to 4.8 GHz | Radeon 840M | 15–54 W | 50 TOPS |
Ryzen AI Max parts target premium mobile PCs, creator laptops and thin workstations with a comparatively large integrated Radeon GPU. PRO models add AMD’s business-focused security and manageability features. AMD listed OEM systems from Dell, ASUS, HP, Lenovo and MSI among the expected designs.
“50 TOPS” describes the NPU’s stated AI throughput; it does not predict total application speed, graphics performance or battery life. Laptop manufacturers choose different power limits, cooling systems, memory arrangements and displays, so the same processor can behave very differently in two machines.

The Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT belong to AMD’s RDNA 4 generation, but their formal announcement was February 28, 2025, weeks after CES. AMD announced board-partner availability beginning March 6. Calling them CES launches collapses two separate events.
| Specification | Radeon RX 9070 XT | Radeon RX 9070 |
|---|---|---|
| Compute units | 64 | 56 |
| Memory | 16 GB GDDR6 | 16 GB GDDR6 |
| Game clock | 2.4 GHz | 2.1 GHz |
| Boost clock | Up to 3.0 GHz | Up to 2.5 GHz |
| Memory bus | 256-bit | 256-bit |
| Infinity Cache | 64 MB | 64 MB |
| Board power | 304 W | 220 W |
| Launch SEP | $599 USD | $549 USD |
Those are historical launch suggested prices, not guaranteed August 2026 retail prices. Board-partner cards can differ in dimensions, cooler design, noise, factory clocks and street price. Verify the exact card’s power-supply requirement and case clearance before buying.

FSR 4 and the software side
AMD introduced FSR 4 as an ML-based upscaling technology associated with RX 9000-series hardware and RDNA 4 features such as FP8 WMMA. AMD said supported games using FSR 3.1 could receive an upgrade path, announced more than 30 games at launch and expected 75 titles later in 2025. Those figures are AMD’s launch claims. Actual support depends on the game developer, implementation and driver version; FSR 4 availability is not automatic in every title.

Which AMD product fits which buyer?
Desktop gamer or creator
- Choose between an X3D processor and a conventional Ryzen 9000 model based on the balance of gaming, rendering and other sustained all-core work.
- Budget for an AM5 motherboard, DDR5 memory and an adequate cooler. Serious gaming normally also requires a discrete graphics card.
- Check motherboard BIOS support before installing a newer CPU.
Laptop buyer
- Compare the exact processor model, not just “Ryzen AI” or “Ryzen 9000.”
- Check manufacturer power limits, cooling, soldered-memory configuration, battery capacity, display resolution and any discrete GPU.
- Treat NPU TOPS as an accelerator specification, not a substitute for CPU, GPU or application benchmarks.
Handheld buyer
- Confirm whether the device uses Z2, Z2 Extreme or Z2 Go.
- Look for sustained wattage, battery size, memory bandwidth, fan noise and screen resolution.
- Check Windows or Linux support and compatibility with the games you actually play.
Graphics-card upgrader
- Compare the card’s real street price with the $549 or $599 launch SEP rather than assuming those historical figures still apply.
- Verify power connectors, board length, thickness and power-supply capacity.
- Consider ray-tracing performance and whether your games support FSR 4.
What CES 2025 did not establish
- It did not provide standardized independent benchmarks for every announced processor or graphics product.
- It did not establish battery life for Z2 handhelds or Ryzen AI laptops; those results depend on each OEM design.
- It did not set a single retail price for the CES processor announcements.
- It did not make every “Q1 2025” availability expectation a guarantee that every laptop or handheld shipped on that date.
Verdict
AMD’s CES 2025 story was a broad Ryzen expansion: high-end Zen 5 X3D desktop CPUs, a mixed-architecture Z2 handheld family, more Ryzen AI laptop tiers and Ryzen 9000HX mobile chips. The Radeon RX 9070 belongs in the wider 2025 AMD narrative, but its formal launch came on February 28, followed by announced availability on March 6. Keeping those dates and architecture differences separate is essential when comparing AMD’s products or choosing a system.
