Changing an eligible personal Google Account’s Gmail address does not create a new Google Account or erase its saved data. But it does not automatically update the email address stored by every outside service, either. A service that uses your email as an account identifier may not recognize the new address—or may not connect it to the same Sign in with Google account.
Before changing addresses, check the login and recovery settings for important third-party accounts, update the email at each service where possible, and test access. Keep the old address available for sign-in and recovery while you do.

What changes—and what stays the same
This applies to an eligible personal Google Account whose current Google Account email ends in @gmail.com and whose settings offer the option to change it to another Gmail address. Google says the option may not be available for every account. The Google Account email is used to sign in and can appear when you share Drive files, send Calendar invitations, or use Sign in with Google. Google’s change-address guidance explains eligibility and effects.

- The former Gmail address becomes an alternate address. Messages are delivered to both the old and new addresses, and you can use either address to sign in to Google services such as Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Google Play, and Drive.
- The change is reversible, with a restriction. Google says you can change back to the previous address, but cannot create a new Gmail-ending Google Account email for that account for 12 months after the change.
These points describe the Google Account itself. An outside service maintains its own account records, so it may still have the old email saved as your username or recovery address.

Why a third-party account may not recognize you
Some apps and websites identify a user by email address. Google says it continues to provide the old username to linked apps after you change your Google Account email. That may help explain why an outside service still shows or expects the old address; it does not mean every service will automatically update its own account record.
The problem can surface when you try to sign in with the new address, use Sign in with Google, or recover an account. The service may treat the new address as unfamiliar or fail to associate it with the account you already use. Google describes these as possible issues, not a guaranteed outcome for every linked service. See Google’s troubleshooting guidance.

Prepare third-party accounts before changing the address
- Make an inventory. Identify important websites and apps where the old Gmail address is the login, recovery email, or contact address. Include services where you use Sign in with Google.
- Check each service’s account settings. Look for an email, username, or sign-in method setting. If you can change the email there, update it to the address you plan to use and complete any verification the service requests.
- Test the service’s sign-in. Confirm that the updated address works. If you rely on Sign in with Google, test that route too rather than assuming the service has followed Google’s change.
- Keep the old address available. It remains an alternate address for your Google Account and may be needed by a third-party service for sign-in or recovery.
- Back up important data. Google recommends backing up before the change. If you already have a backup method, use it; an external drive is one optional way to keep a separate copy.
If a service has no suitable way to change its email, Google advises not proceeding with the address change in that service’s settings. Consider whether you can continue using its existing sign-in, or check that provider’s recovery options before changing your Google Account email.

Try the service’s own recovery process
Use the non-Google service’s “forgot password” or account-recovery flow. It may send a verification message to the old email. If you regain access, update the email in that service’s account settings if the option is available. Google also recommends saving a recovered password or passkey in Google Password Manager.

If Sign in with Google no longer works
Start with the service’s account-recovery route. Google’s fallback guidance for a service that only permits Google sign-in includes switching the Google Account back to the old address, trying the service’s Google sign-in, and then using any available service settings to add a password, remove the Google connection, or update the account email. After switching back to the new address, you may need to delete and recreate the Google link and grant permissions again. This is a service-specific recovery sequence, not a routine step for everyone. Follow Google’s troubleshooting steps and the third-party provider’s instructions.
Other possible effects to check
Google says some issues resolve within a few hours, while others require action. Its guidance lists possible effects across linked apps and Google services; these are not inevitable for every account.

Work, school, or group address
An address managed by a work, school, or other organization cannot be edited through the personal Google Account setting. Contact the administrator who manages it. Google explains this distinction in its organization-account guidance.

Adding Gmail to a non-Gmail Google Account
If your Google Account currently uses a non-Gmail address and you add Gmail, that is a different operation from changing one Gmail address to another. Google says the new Gmail address becomes the primary username and the original address becomes an alternate. See Google’s instructions for using Gmail to access a Google Account.
Removing Gmail
Removing Gmail is not the same as changing the address. Google says Gmail messages and settings are deleted after 30 days, and the Gmail address cannot be used by anyone in the future. Review Gmail’s removal guidance before taking that separate action.
