Changing DNS Doesn’t Hide Your Queries—it Changes Who Can See Them

Changing DNS does not erase your domain lookups. It moves them to another resolver; encryption can protect the path to that resolver, but not hide queries from it.

Changing your DNS resolver does not make your domain lookups disappear. It changes which resolver receives them—and, depending on whether DNS is encrypted, which other parties along the route may be able to read them. DoH and DoT protect the connection to the resolver, but the resolver itself can still see the queries. The practical question is not whether DNS becomes invisible, but which observer you want to limit and which resolver you trust.

What changes when you switch DNS resolvers?

Your device usually asks a recursive resolver to find the records needed for a domain. That resolver processes the requested name and can generally associate the query with transport identifiers, such as the client’s IP address. Switching resolvers therefore changes the service receiving your DNS questions; it does not erase the questions or prevent the new resolver from seeing them.

As RFC 8932 puts it, “the resolver operator still has (in principle) full visibility of the query data and transport identifiers for each user,” even when DNS messages are encrypted on the wire. RFC 8932

Who can see DNS queries, and at what point?

Visibility depends on the DNS transport and on where an observer sits. With ordinary, unencrypted DNS, a network-path observer between your device and its resolver may be able to read the questions. With encrypted DNS, that observer cannot ordinarily read the DNS messages on that connection, but the resolver that receives them still can.

DNS is also a hierarchy, not a single shared list. A recursive resolver may contact authoritative servers to obtain records, but caching means those servers do not necessarily receive a request for every client lookup. A recursive resolver can also forward requests to another resolver, adding another service relationship. RFC 9076

What DoH and DoT protect—and what they do not

DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) encrypt DNS messages between your device and the chosen resolver. This helps prevent ordinary on-path reading of those messages. It does not stop the resolver from processing the requested domain, nor does DNS encryption by itself establish that all browsing activity or network metadata is hidden.

  • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.

That distinction matters if your concern is your internet provider: encrypted DNS can keep it from simply reading DNS questions on the device-to-resolver link, but it does not make you anonymous to the resolver or prove that other browsing signals are concealed. The privacy benefit is specific to DNS data at specific points, not a blanket privacy guarantee.

How to judge a resolver’s privacy practices

There is no universal ranking of resolvers established by the available evidence. Compare the operator and its stated practices rather than assuming that a different resolver is automatically more private. Look for:

  • Collection and retention: what query or client data the operator says it collects, how long it keeps it, and how deletion works.
  • Access and sharing: who can access the data, including service partners or other organizations.
  • Secondary use: whether queries are used for aggregated research or other purposes, and whether the policy describes exceptions.
  • Filtering: whether the resolver filters content and whether that behavior suits your needs.

Example: what Cloudflare says about its 1.1.1.1 resolver

Cloudflare says it deletes Public Resolver Logs within 25 hours and deletes truncated client IP addresses within 25 hours. It also describes access for APNIC to anonymized query data and the creation of aggregates that may be stored indefinitely. These statements describe Cloudflare’s own resolver, not other providers. Its policy also notes a limited exception for randomly sampled network packets. Cloudflare privacy policy

Can Oblivious DoH separate your IP address from the query?

Oblivious DNS over HTTPS (ODoH) is designed to divide what a proxy and a target resolver can learn: the proxy sees the client address but not the encrypted query, while the target sees the query but receives the proxy’s address. The separation depends on the proxy and target not colluding, so it is not a guarantee of anonymity.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Cloudflare’s documentation says standard DoH encrypts queries but leaves the resolver able to see both the client’s IP address and the requested domain. It describes ODoH under RFC 9230 as experimental and not endorsed by the IETF. Cloudflare ODoH documentation

Make the choice based on the observer you want to limit

If you want to reduce the chance that a network-path observer reads DNS messages, encrypted DNS addresses that specific exposure. If you want to limit what the resolver can learn, switching to another resolver changes which operator receives the queries, so its data practices and trustworthiness matter. If you want stronger separation between client identity and query content, ODoH offers a design for that separation, with the non-collusion and experimental-status qualifications above.

Encrypted DNS can also concentrate queries among fewer resolvers, which does not remove those resolvers’ ability to learn them. A 2023 USENIX Security study discusses this tradeoff; its browser-interface findings apply to the platforms and US context examined in that study, not as a current universal guide to setup. 2023 USENIX Security study
