Changing the selected wallet account or blockchain network does not reset token approvals. An ERC-20 allowance is recorded on a specific network for a particular account, token, and spender. To remove one, review it on that network and submit an on-chain revocation transaction. Disconnecting a dapp is not a substitute.
Why an approval remains after switching accounts or networks
A wallet connection and a token approval are separate things. Connecting a wallet lets a dapp request interactions; an ERC-20 approval is an on-chain permission for a spender, often a smart contract, to move a specified token. Disconnecting the dapp does not erase an approval already granted. ethereum.org explains the distinction between disconnecting and revoking.

Approvals are also specific to a network. Revoke.cash describes each token approval as applying to one token on one network. Switching to another account or chain changes what the wallet interface is showing; it does not change permissions recorded for the previous account and chain. A checker result for one account-and-network pair says nothing about the others.
How to review and revoke an allowance
- Identify the account and network that granted the approval. Check the wallet account and the chain where you used the dapp. Include other accounts and networks you used; do not assume a current wallet selection represents them all.
- Open an approval manager for that chain. In MetaMask, use MetaMask Portfolio’s spending-caps view, or use a reputable block explorer’s approval checker. Confirm that the tool supports the network and connect or select the account whose approvals you want to inspect. MetaMask’s instructions for managing spending caps list Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, BNB Chain, Optimism, and Base for review and revocation. Revoke.cash says it supports a broader range of EVM networks; check its FAQ for current coverage before relying on a result.
- Inspect the token, spender, and allowance. Check which token is involved, which address can spend it, and how much is authorized. An unlimited allowance can let the spender move all of that token type held by the account on that network. Revoke permissions that are no longer needed or that you do not trust; reduce an allowance instead if the tool offers that option and you still need the dapp.
- Submit the change on the same network. Choose revoke or the desired lower allowance, review the wallet transaction details, and confirm it. A revocation is an on-chain transaction and costs that network’s fee; the fee varies, so there is no reliable fixed amount to quote.
- Wait for confirmation and repeat where needed. Check the transaction status, then review every other relevant account-and-network pair separately. A checker limited to one chain cannot establish the status of approvals elsewhere.
What revoking changes—and what it does not
MetaMask says spending caps are stored on-chain and remain effective until another transaction changes or revokes them. Once a revocation is confirmed, the spender can no longer use that allowance for the token on that network. If you later use the dapp again, it may ask you to approve the token again.

This guidance concerns token allowances, especially ERC-20-style approvals. NFT approvals and newer signature-based permissions can work differently, so an allowance checker should not be treated as proof that every authorization connected to a wallet has been found. Tool network lists also describe only that tool’s coverage, not universal support for every chain or permission type.

Revoking an allowance addresses that particular token permission; it does not secure a compromised wallet. If funds disappear after adding ETH or another asset, do not assume that adding native currency itself caused the loss. Treat possible wallet compromise separately: stop using a wallet if its secret recovery phrase may be exposed, and move remaining assets to a securely controlled wallet. Revoking token allowances does not make an exposed recovery phrase safe.
