To change Facebook Messenger’s notification sound, start with Messenger’s own Notifications & Sounds settings on iPhone. On Android, open Messenger’s notification settings and check the sound for the incoming-message notification category. The exact controls vary by app, iOS or Android version, and phone manufacturer.
Change the sound on Android
- Open Settings > Apps > Messenger > Notifications. Menu names and locations can differ by Android version and phone manufacturer.
- If notification categories are shown, open the category for incoming messages and look for its sound selector. Choose a tone there; changing a different category may not affect the alert you hear. This path is described in a secondary guide, not established as a universal Messenger procedure. Android guidance
- If no sound selector appears, check Messenger’s own notification settings and confirm Android allows Messenger notifications.
- Send or receive a new message to test the change.
Do not assume every Android build supports choosing a custom audio file; the available options depend on the device and software.

Change the sound on iPhone
- Open Messenger and look for Notifications & Sounds in its settings.
- Review the sound controls available there and select a tone if Messenger offers that option in your current app version.
- Test the result with a new incoming message.
Apple’s iPhone guide covers system notification settings and uses Messages as its per-app example. It also explains that general alert-tone choices apply to other apps with notifications enabled. That means changing Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone is not a reliable way to choose a Messenger-only sound; Messenger-specific choices depend on the app and iOS version. Messenger on the web or desktop
Meta documents how to turn notifications on or off for conversations and how to mute a conversation on messenger.com, but its help page does not describe selecting a custom notification sound. Meta’s notification and muting guidance

If the sound does not change
- Confirm Messenger notifications are allowed in your phone’s system settings.
- On Android, check the incoming-message category specifically, rather than only the app’s main notification switch.
- On iPhone, confirm that you changed a control inside Messenger if you want a Messenger-specific tone.
- Check that Messenger is current, then test with a new incoming notification.
These checks can help identify a settings mismatch; they do not guarantee that every device or app version exposes a custom sound option.
