To change a Facebook video thumbnail, open the video or post’s editing controls and look for a thumbnail option. If it appears, you may be able to choose a frame from the video or upload a custom image. Facebook’s available controls vary by publishing surface and video type, and its official help pages do not confirm a universal thumbnail-editing workflow.
Change the thumbnail on a published Facebook video

Open the video post on the Facebook Page or profile that published it.

Open the post’s options menu and choose Edit post, if available. Facebook’s Help Center documents this route for editing a video post’s captions, but does not say that a thumbnail control will appear there: Facebook’s instructions for editing video captions.

In the edit screen, inspect the available video or media controls for a thumbnail section. A third-party guide updated March 4, 2026, reports that Page video upload and editing flows may offer a choice between a frame from the video and a custom image: PosterMyWall’s Facebook thumbnail instructions. Treat this as a reported workflow, not a control Facebook guarantees for every post or account.

If a thumbnail option is present, select a frame or choose the custom-image option, then save or publish the edit using the controls shown on screen.
If you cannot find a thumbnail control, the post-edit route may still let you change other details without allowing a thumbnail change. Do not assume that an option documented for one Page upload flow is available for every video.

Choose a frame or upload a custom image

Meta AI describes using a still frame or promotional image to create thumbnail artwork, refine it, and download or share the result. That can help prepare an image, but it does not establish that Facebook will accept a custom thumbnail for every video type: Meta AI’s thumbnail creation guide.

What to check if the thumbnail option is missing

Confirm which account published the video. Make sure you are editing the intended Page or profile, rather than a different account or a shared copy of the post.

Check your Page access. Facebook distinguishes between Facebook access and task access for Pages. Its access guide explains those access types, but does not specify the exact permission required to change a video thumbnail: Facebook’s Page access guide.

Use the publishing surface for the video type. A Reel and a standard video post may not expose the same editing controls. Facebook’s help confirms that a video can be uploaded from a computer as a Reel, but does not document a Reel thumbnail picker: Facebook’s Reel creation instructions.

Check during upload as well as after publishing. The reported custom-thumbnail workflow is in a Page video upload dialog. If you are preparing a new video, inspect the available options before publishing; the control may not be present after publication.

Do not rely on older thumbnail-testing announcements
Meta’s November 2023 creator announcement discussed testing content variants and experimentation involving thumbnail options. It is historical context, not confirmation that thumbnail testing—or a particular thumbnail editor—is currently available to every creator: Meta’s 2023 creator announcement.
