Researchers say three painted glyphic compounds in Cave 19 at Chalcatzingo, Mexico, use signs from the Teotihuacan writing system. The claim is specific to one small rockshelter—not evidence that cave paintings across Mesoamerica generally formed a single writing system. Two compounds may identify a place and a martial title; a third appears to be ritual imagery rather than linguistic text.
What researchers found in Cave 19
Chalcatzingo is an archaeological site in Morelos, about 90 km southeast of Mexico City. Known for Formative-period architecture, monuments and Olmec-style rock art, it has a much later painted record in Cave 19, a small rockshelter on the western face of Cerro Delgado, roughly 330 m from the site’s centre. Researchers renewed documentation of the cave in August 2022.
The cave measures 5.43 m wide, up to 2.24 m deep and about 7.4 m² in surface area. At the back is a bedrock shelf approximately 1.45 m wide by 0.52 m deep. Above it, the wall and ceiling are blackened by fire. On the rock, researchers recorded three compounds painted in dark red pigment, apparently with a brush.
The shelf and soot are physical observations. Their interpretation as evidence of a ritual setting is an argument, not a directly observed ceremony. The authors describe the three compounds as identifiable within the Teotihuacan writing system, while treating one additional image as iconography rather than a logogram. Their article appeared in Antiquity as “Painted Teotihuacan glyphs of Cave 19, Chalcatzingo, Morelos, Mexico” (DOI: 10.15184/aqy.2026.10425).

What the three painted compounds may mean
Compound 1: a possible place-name
Part of this image has weathered away. The authors identify a stylized mountain with scrolls emerging from an open mouth, which they suggest may depict speech or song. They propose the reading “Singing Mountain” and connect it with the local Nahuatl place-name Cuicatepec. This is a proposed interpretation, not a settled translation.
Compound 2: a possible martial title
The central elements are a beaded necklace, a cloth or garment and an upright dart identified as an atlatl projectile. The authors interpret the combination as a martial title, perhaps associated with a particular warrior order. Comparable assemblages have been interpreted as warrior bundles, but that identification is not uncontested.

Compound 3: a starry frame and ritual imagery
A large rectangular frame decorated with five-pointed stars sits above the fire-blackened shelf. The authors say it does not appear to record linguistic information per se. Instead, they compare it with ritual awnings depicted in Teotihuacan imagery and hypothesize a connection to pyrolytic rites and the commemoration of warriors.
Surviving evidence does not establish what, if anything, was placed on the shelf. The authors cannot determine whether it held a censer or a funerary bundle because associated traces have disappeared. The proposed rite—and any link to cremation—therefore remains uncertain.

Why the identification matters—and what it does not establish
Teotihuacan writing has been debated in part because many known texts are short, often consisting of a single glyphic compound rather than a long historical narrative. Recent scholarship cited by the Cave 19 article describes the system as logo-phonetic, with discrete graphemes and many logograms. Christophe Helmke and Jesper Nielsen estimated its repertoire at almost 120 signs in 2021, as cited in the 2026 article; that is an estimate for the broader sign system, not a count of signs in this cave.
Identifying a tradition as writing does not mean its signs have all been deciphered or that the language behind it is known. The precise linguistic affiliation of Teotihuacan writing remains debated. The Cave 19 authors’ strongest claim is that three painted compounds use signs identifiable within that writing system. Their proposed place-name and martial-title readings are more interpretive, and the starry frame is treated as iconography rather than straightforward text.

When the cave images were made
The authors stylistically date the glyphs and associated cave use to sometime in the fourth through sixth centuries AD. That is centuries after Chalcatzingo’s Formative-period prominence and its Olmec-style iconography, associated with roughly 900–500 BC. The cave therefore records a later phase in a landscape already known for earlier ceremonial importance.
The study also notes Teotihuacan-related settlement evidence nearby, including San Ignacio, about 13 km south of Chalcatzingo. That context does not prove that the cave’s users were all migrants from Teotihuacan; the painted compounds are the direct evidence for the writing-system claim.

What remains uncertain
- Exact readings: “Singing Mountain” and the martial-title interpretation are proposals based on comparison with signs elsewhere, not fully established translations.
- Ritual activity: the shelf and fire-blackening support a ritual-context interpretation, but they do not identify a specific rite.
- What the shelf held: surviving traces do not show whether it supported a censer, a funerary bundle or something else.
- Language and broader scope: the find does not settle the linguistic affiliation of Teotihuacan writing or show that Mesoamerican cave paintings generally belonged to one writing system.
