Chair44: A 3D Einstein Tile That Forces Aperiodic Patterns

Chair44 is a reported three-dimensional aperiodic monotile: seven unit cubes arranged as a chair-like polyhedron whose matching rules prevent periodic tilings.

Yes. A polyhedral shape called Chair44 has been reported to tile three-dimensional space only in aperiodic ways: copies can fill space, but they cannot make a repeating pattern. The result is attributed to I. Tsiokos in 2026. Here, “Einstein” is a mathematical pun on the German ein Stein, or “one stone”—a reference to one tile shape, not to Albert Einstein.

What is Chair44?

Chair44 is a three-dimensional monotile: one shape that can be copied and fitted together to fill space. It is described as a polyhedron built from seven unit cubes. Imagine a cube measuring two units on each side, then remove the unit cube at one corner. The remaining seven cubes form a chair-like shape.

That description captures its volume, but not the whole reason it is interesting. Chair44’s surface encodes matching behavior: the way neighboring copies can meet constrains how larger groups of tiles form. According to Dmitry Kamenetsky’s 2026 technical note, those groups assemble hierarchically into larger “supertiles.”

What does “aperiodic” mean here?

In everyday terms, an aperiodic tiling fills space without settling into a pattern that repeats at regular intervals. The stricter mathematical idea rules out not only a whole tiling that repeats, but also arbitrarily large patches that repeat periodically. “Strongly aperiodic” describes a tile or matching-rule system whose permitted tilings have this property.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

So the claim is not that the shape cannot tile space, or that its arrangements must look random. It is that copies can fill space while the matching constraints prevent periodic repetition. The result concerns the symmetries of mathematically admitted tilings; it is not evidence that a physical arrangement has been built or tested.

How do the matching rules constrain the tiling?

Kamenetsky’s note, dated September 30 and posted to arXiv on October 1, 2026, gives an independent computational re-presentation of the matching-rule mechanism. Its enumeration shows how restrictive the allowed local contacts are and how neighboring tiles force larger structures:

  • 2,388 bare contacts were enumerated before applying the matching rule.
  • 44 contacts are allowed by the rule; 30 of those occur in infinite tilings.
  • The note identifies 33 one-shell clusters. Of these, 15 can be extended by a second shell, and all 15 extensions force the same supertile.

These are combinatorial verification counts reported by Kamenetsky, not measurements of physical performance. They help explain the logic of the construction: the local surface rules narrow the possible neighborhoods, and those neighborhoods can force a consistent larger-scale structure.

What has been established about the discovery?

Kamenetsky’s note credits I. Tsiokos with the Chair44 result and says it was announced in September 2026. The note treats the three-dimensional tile as an established result and presents its own contribution as an independent verification of the matching-rule mechanism, rather than a derivation of the specific polyhedron. The account available in that note does not establish the original paper’s peer-review or journal-publication status.

“A single tile shape” means one shape suffices for the construction. It does not mean mathematicians have shown Chair44 is the only possible shape in all of three-dimensional geometry that can force aperiodicity.

How Chair44 differs from the Hat and Spectre

Chair44 is not another name for the Hat or Spectre. Those are separate two-dimensional monotile results; Chair44 is a three-dimensional polyhedron.

Shape Dimension and form Reflection behavior What the result establishes
Chair44 Three-dimensional chair polyhedron formed from seven unit cubes Not stated in Kamenetsky’s 2026 note Reported as a strongly aperiodic polyhedral monotile in three-dimensional space
Hat Two-dimensional planar shape discovered by David Smith and proved with Joseph Samuel Myers, Craig S. Kaplan, and Chaim Goodman-Strauss Its admitted tilings mix reflected and unreflected copies A planar monotile whose geometry forces aperiodicity; the authors’ article appeared in Combinatorial Theory in June 2024
Spectre Separate two-dimensional chiral monotile family Does not require reflected copies A distinct planar aperiodic monotile result

The Hat’s name refers to its outline, which can also resemble a T-shirt when rotated. “Einstein,” by contrast, is the one-tile pun that became associated with the planar discovery and applies as a general term. Neither the Hat nor its printable resources are Chair44 files.

Is Chair44 a physical tile or a product?

The result is mathematical: it describes a polyhedral shape and rules governing how copies fit together. The cited account does not establish a retail Chair44 tile, puzzle, kit, or printable model, nor does it report an experimental build. In particular, a separate 2026 optical experiment used nanoscale patterns based on the planar Hat; it was not an experiment with Chair44.
